Not sure what you're normally into but this is standard Gundam tradition. But this is a standalone series that doesnt really connect to other Gundam shows before it.
I can't really describe it to people who don't normally watch Gundam or robot shows as a whole, but it is more than just guys being shirtless, and it's exciting plot-wise so far. There are some eye-rolling scenes having to do with the main heroine, but the two male leads and side characters are carrying the show nicely.
And we're just about to get to the main Gundam Homos. Again, I cant explain it well to non-UC fans, but the buzz about new Char and Garma is palpable for that cluster.

I'm a huge MikaOrga shipper but I don't feel threatened by Atra, it's nice that Mika has more than one person who understands him. Besides, Orga being so bro, it feels like the line between platonic and sexual attraction beween them is less adhered to, like they could easilt slip in and out of a sexual relationship. But Atra is distant, romantic vibe and very sheltered from "all parts" of Mika, as shown in latest episode.

It showed they didn't rush into that execution scene recklessly- last ep they mentioned a Strategy meeting, this ep opened with the two of them sitting where Barbatos was (also where episode 1 opened, with Mika finding Orga sleeping in the supposedly secret barbatos/engine room).
It may be that that place is "their place" like where they usually go to get some quiet peace (and it's warm there) kinda like an oasis, if not sanctuary, it's a place that has meaning for Orga and Mika
And I think it highlights how deliberate and prepared they were for the next step they took together

I feel the same way, I haven't been so excited about Gundam since 00, and that was the series that first got me started on the franchise. It's as if after much floundering, Gundam has finally 'come back home', so to speak.
And as much as I dislike the whole Gundam Hime staple, there are scenes where her presence actually adds a dose of realism to the whole situation. Like when she tries to shake Mika's hand in order to show how 'equal' they are, only for him to refuse because his hands are dirty with oil which shows they are not even remotely equal...at all.

So from past threads before we moved to /cm/ it's been pretty clear that Iron Blooded Homos have great ideas that need to be realized as fapfic or art. Usually the easiest way to make a centralized depository for those ideas is with a kink meme (or at least that's how we did it back in the 00 days).

I was one of the anons in that first homo IBO thread wanking about Mika/Takaki frottage and kissing, and I've wanted more of that since then. Perhaps from Takaki's perspective, to switch things up. It wasn't a stated profile or anything, but it's basically set in stone in fan's head that he's 17. nothing on Mika's age though. Kudelia is 16, per her profile which flashed on screen in ep1.

Indeed, telling age in anime is often difficult. Short of the very gruff type of characters like Crank, everyone younger- which is the bulk of the cast- becomes difficult to figure out. But I'm sure they'll let us know and probably soon.

I like stories that deal with mercenary groups in a way that shows some very unique distinctions between national armies or national forces, I think G-Reco demonstated how convulted it can be when you try to present BOTH types of those kinds of forces.
stories like Area 88, Yukikaze, and (and I thought the side stories for Gundam Seed such as the Manga and Stargazer were better because they were removed from the larger "epic scale drama"). and Macross Frontier excluded... for the most part. Anyway, these types of robo/sci-fi shoes are more enjoyable for me because you get to take a step back from the over-arching war and really focus on the small, close knit group of characters. IBO is slowly gaining an ensemble cast, but it started really strong with that band of brothers feel. and For Area 88 and Yukikaze especially, there's that bond between men that's forged because of survival and trust.
Well, IBO hit the ground running with that, but still shows up in small little scenes how the main 2 rely on each other, in their complicated way, and we'll probably get more flashbacks as the story progresses. Orga DID open the show with a nightmare/flashback, which begs the question of "does that still haunt him? why?"
Possibly because he couldn't protect Mika at that time, and since then has been somewhat cursed to be under Mika's protection instead, a reversal of older brother role.
and are they really searching for a place they belong? With the latest episode, it's certainly not a place "without fighting" because I think it's forgone conclusion now that Mika and Orga are destined to fight and fight and fight to the death. He doesn't hold that vew for all the Tekkadan though, since he allowed a lot of the kids to leave (with pay too!) so it's really a personal weight he is carrying.
anyway, technical aspects of the genre-- I'm always hyped to see the fights, because I love the 2D animation, and Sunrise does set the bar for set up and climaxes of fights.

Additioanlly, we know there will be episodes where Mikazuki loses or will get badly beaten, because the main robot is meant to collect armor and pieces and weapons. Also there's going to be a mid-season upgrade, no doubt.
but I also love the gundam staples- themes about separating from past conflicts/past prejudices, themes about identifying with your enemy but following your destiny, themes about losing your family and regaining a surrogate family.
additionally, this is a Gundam where guys can be guys and girls can be girls. It's comfortable and feels like more grounded. Watching this show with the rest of /m/ or twitter is fun because of so many active posters coming from the Gundam 00 or Original Gundam fandoms, even Gundam Age. There's also chatterfrom Sidonia, Fate/Stay and Aldnoah Zero fandoms because of obvious reasons.

Overall, it's mainly the excitement that I feel for most new Gundam Shows, siding with factions, rooting for underdog pilots, waiting for exploitable homo moments between Really Close "Brothers" and also the whole cross-over potential because the video game universes that include several gundam shows at once.
I just think that there are some really good characters so far that are worth watching for reveals and twists. It's entertaining war drama that, while rooted in some real concepts that we see today in conflict zones, it still removed and distant in fiction land, with guilt-free giant robot battles what more do you need.
also good god, the robot-pilot relationship is pretty damn exploitable. Barbatos' personality has yet to really be revealed, but I'm sure it'll be good as it builds. for now, I see it as a unit project and flagship.

G-Recon demonstrated a lot of things, sadly, none of them were particularly good. My greatest problem with the show is that apart from being too jolly (yes, not unheard of in the franchise but it still annoyed me) was how little sense anyone's motivations made and how random some of it seemed. Then you'd have some characters switch sides and suddenly fight for the side they had fighting before without anyone seeming at all bothered, worried or even curious.
And above all there was no sense of danger, ever. I struggled to finish it.
I'm not as diehard fan of Gundam as some but I have seen my fair share and am curious to see just how this series fits in the franchise. It adds a layer of fun.

there's a lot of excitement for tekketsu, I see some Gundam 00 fans being super excited, I do feel a lot of the same themes, but not the religious-power-complex from Setsuna, or the need for redemption/return to innocence or leading humanity themes. I loved those, but I'm glad they're not in Tekketsu.
so far, the main themes of Tekketsu that I get are "carving your own name" so to speak. There's no huge egos in the main male cast, with the exception of MAYBE the Gjallajorn guys. We'll find out soon.

I watched Reco and Build Fighters when they aired, but I wasn't "in to" Gundam at the time. I finished my watchthrough of the franchise recently, so this is my first time really looking forward to a Gundam each week. The highschool musical elements didn't jive with my idea of an actual mercenary force/militia force. I like it, but I dont see it as serious small scale militia squad, like how Macross Plus had. Macross Frontier is still good as a Macross show, and as a robo show overall.
If you like Seiyuu, watch Area 88 (latest OAV has a lot of popular seiyuu) it was written by a man in the 1970s who used to work in Shojo manga, and was assistant to Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Captain Harlock. It's very melodramatic while still being "manly" and dealing with "manly" issues. Funny thing, they added --specifically for the most recent OAV-- a Female pilot character, just because there was only one female VA on staff (voicing a child soldier/pilot) and they wanted to try adding to the cast.
Sentou Yousei Yukikaze is a 4-ep OAV nick named "brokeback airforce" and boy, is it ever. The love triangle is between hot commanding officer, ace pilot, and the plane. All of them are best girls. and the fights are damn good. Tom Cruise has movie rights.

Watch G-Reco when you can marathon it, but don't go too fast. It's a really nice show visually and the eyecandy is astounding. ALSO on the gundam 00 angle-- I was huge in to Lockon x Setsuna, and I see alot of LockSetsu fans active now in IBO clusters. But another difference from back then is, it was always LOCKON x SETSUNA, and SETSUNA x LOCKON was only in gag comic (or later in s2, Setsuna x Lyle-- which is already a different dynamic)
whereas with Orga and Mika, if you search Orga x Mika you'll get a lot of brotherly love and tame stuff, sometimes R18 stuff, but if you search Mika x Orga, it's a lot raunchier results and chatter. There's also people who don't know/don't care who tops. This is way different from just 7 years ago! Mika is not only shorter, but smaller physically. Still, his aggression and stubbornness really is strong when he wants it to be, he has such a strong personality and it shows in key physical actions. Also, Orga is the "spoiling" type of older brother, despite being decidedly "in charge".
absolute best part is, I dont think Mika cares if he's top or bottom... and neither does Orga. And this is reflected in fanart today. Truly revolutionary times we live in!

It updates 1 chapter (about 50 pages) a month, just like how the Japanese publication originally was. Unfortunately the Animated version of The Origin will only be the Char Backstory, it's akin to only having Episodes 1-2-3 of the Star Wars movies, when you really wish the original trilogy was redone (not that there's anything wrong with the Original Trilogy, of Gundam or Star Wars)

also, the Origin updates on that website around the 20th of each month. so newest chapter is coming soon. It's the same translation as the ones in the hardcover books, currently out now. but a good way to sample if you want to invest in the books (If you have money, do so. if you're in the USA, wait until Barnes and Noble have their manga sales, and buy it in bulk). We don't know anything about Mika's actual hand to hand combat skills (though Barbatos is piloted intuitively) but we know Setsuna was trained a lot in it. So if Setsuna closed the distance I'm sure he'd be able to shank Mika. Mika had good maneuvering but so does Setsuna.
