9th round of the 5th Annual /ck/ Top Master Iron Chef Ultimate Nightmare Kitchen Survivor Challenge!

This is the last of the elimination rounds! If you are not part of the contestants still in the running, feel free to post along, however I will not be tallying the scores. But the more entries the better!

Here's the list of those who made the top 6!
Nack
Fantastic
dice
CookingRei
Yellowmug
Eyepatch

Reminder :
-Please timestamp your submission! Detailing the cooking process/posting a vertical is encouraged but not required. If posting multiple photos, you don't need to timestamp each one, as long as the final submission photo is timestamped.
-You MUST use a unique identifier; if you don't want to use a tripcode, you must have some other way to distinguish yourself from the other contestants, such as a cute bird or scary statue in your timestamped entry, as long as it's clearly visible and you use it consistently.

**Please try to remain nice to each other. Last thread was much better, thank you!**

Voting will be carried out in this thread. Please read the voting guidelines below.
>>
VOTING GUIDELINES

Voting follows an 'Iron Chef' style scoring system. This means you, the people of /ck/, will judge each entry individually instead of deciding on what you feel is the "best" dish.

Dishes are scored out of a total 20 points, based on 4 categories (worth a maximum of 5 points each); Presentation, Originality, Appeal and Challenge Goals. You may award 0's if you feel the contestant did not meet your expectations for a category.

-Presentation: The appearance of items on the plate; plating skills
-Originality: Creativity in composing the dish
-Appeal: How appetizing the food looks/whether or not the dish appeals to your personal taste as a voter
-Challenge Goals: How closely the entry followed the challenge goal(s)

The distinction between Presentation and Appeal: If someone submits an artfully arranged but burnt steak as an entry, it may score high in Presentation but low in Appeal.

For additional info and to see submissions from Previous years, check out the Challenge blog. (http://ckchallenge.blogspot.ca/)

The theme of Round Nine is...

Party!

Party food. Something that makes you smile, that makes you think of good time with the people you like having around. While you're perfectly welcome to make a large spread of food, please make sure there is clearly a "main dish" because that is what people will be voting on.

Two contestants will not be moving on to the next round. Next round is the final!

There seems to be a problem with the scores, I got 11.2 during round 5, not 7. I think you accidently switched some people around...
>>
>>7642581
What do you expect this year's challenge has been a joke from the start, there has been questionable activity if not outright cheating practically every round
>>
>>7642581
Aw fuck, switched something during the sorting... let me fix that quickly.
>>
>>7642590

Not surprised. I know for a fact some of the scores are wrong. Not the incorrect ones Bubble just posted, but wrong in general. I almost want to say this year is a fix.

I respect you Bubbles and the effort you put into this. But the fact is there remains contestant/s who've cheated all the way through this (I think we have an idea of who), and the fact that you've admitted to not counting low scores yet have happily counted up all the obviously unrealistically high scores for the samefaggy cheaters has ruined this competition and all its credibility. Sucks.

What's worse is that Bubble even counted all of his troll scores, but those who voted him low she said, by her own words, that she discounted them. Why discount low scores and keep the high scores when it's obviously a troll score? This challenge's commissioner has no ethics if they're just going to pick and choose whose vote counts and whose doesn't.

For this round I present the Potluck Bloody Mary. It’s a homemade Bloody Mary with 5 different party food “garnishes”. There’s a slider (bar/finger food), a personal sized pizza (pizza party), a fish taco (Taco Tuesday), a slice of carrot cake with a birthday candle (birthday party), and a nacho base (it’s always a party when there’s nachos).

I’ve always wanted one of those absurd bloody mary’s with all the toppings but was always too embarrassed to actually order one at a restaurant. It was my birthday last week so I decided to go all out and make one for myself – this might be my last round, so I figured why not. I know not everyone likes carrot cake, but it was my birthday, not yours (I also didn’t add any nuts; deal with it).

I'm a bit ambivalent about this one. I really like some parts of the presentation - I like how it doesn't feel too heavy as with most food-adorned Bloody Mary's. The olive and pretzel bread look really good but you didn't make those parts and I'm not sure if you make the corn tortillas either. However, I do like how flat and round the pizza is - it's very striking. The cake looks a bit thin and dull but the candle is a cute, silly touch. I also feel the presentation towards the glass feels quite empty and the cilantro is drab. The nachos are cute though.

The olive, tortillas, and pretzel are the only things that weren't made from scratch (I also haven't figured out a way to distill my own vodka yet).

When Bubble made the round suggestion thread I actually asked that there isn't more than one baking round, and then ended up baking something almost every round (other than the baking round, which turned out to be a bad choice).

I made pizza dough and pretzels from scratch in earlier rounds, and basically made 6 different dishes this round, so thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal to use a couple pre-made ingredients. I could have used tortilla chips out of a bag but fried them fresh instead.

I also meant to rim the glass with lemon juice and dip it in chili powder and/or celery salt, but completely forgot. I'm honestly just proud of myself that I got everything to stay up on those skewers like that.

This almost seems like a joke entry. None of the individual items are very original, but it's probably the most elaborate presentation in this entire competition. The pizza looks like a cheap microwave pizza, and the cilantro looks dead, but otherwise there isn't much to complain about. It definitely says "party food".

I'm not sure if I was supposed to read that as Smashing Pumpkins lyrics, but now I'm seeing the burger as Billy Corgan, the cake as the guitar player, the taco as Darcy, and the pizza as the drummer.

My dish: In-N-Out Tacos with Chunky Guacamole

My favorite parties were when I lived in southern california. all day pool parties, late night garage kickbacks, and everything in between, they were fun. Most of the time, at some point, there would always be someone yelling "Who wants In-n-out?" As good as In-n-out is sober, its even better when white girl wasted. So for my dish, I mixed that in-n-out taste with something else socal is known for: mexican food

I know it's supposed to be "animal style", but it looks really messy, and the sauce seems like it's really sweet and would overpower the guacamole. I think it would have been better if you made a couple small patties (think falafel in a pita) rather than doing ground beef. It also seems more like "SoCal" food rather than party food, and you just happened to grow up in Southern California. I have family in San Diego and Yellowmug's fish taco seems more like SoCal food.

Here's my submission:

Homemade tortilla chips and assorted dips!

For me, party food definitively has to be something to be shared. I'm a big fan of big dishes everybody serves themselves from. Also finger food is fantastic for not leaving any dishes behind!
I went for three different dips so as to provide a good variety of flavors, textures and temperatures.

>The salsa is made with tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, garlic, red peppers and mangos. I removed the pith of the jalapenos to control the heat and not have it over power everything else. I served it cold to keep it's freshness.
>The cheese sauce is creamy, gooey and rich. Just what should be a cheese sauce. I added chipotle peppers to give it a kick and some nice smoky flavor.
>The refried beans round up everything with a ''meatier'' texture and taste. They're also really filling so the whole dish can be used as more of a meal rather than simply snacks.
>Finally. I fried the tortilla chips to give them a great crunch. I would have used masa harina, but I could't find the damn thing. Simple flour tortillas proved to be a good alternative anyways!

You might notice that these aren't my regular D20's since I forgot them. The D12's and a random D10 will have to do.

I have no idea what's going on with those tortilla chips. They look like burnt pita. The salsa and beans both look a little dry, and the cheese dip looks a little thin. There's also way too much dip for the amount of chips. It's still definitely party food, and I'd still happily eat all of it.

Very creative dish so hats off to you for that. However, I don't think that a comically elaborate cocktail really connects with the theme of party food in the sense of sharing it with friends, as you could consume this all alone, and it's all clearly for show rather than for practicality. The mini-pizza looks offputtingly basic and the wedge of cake doesn't look appetising at all. The nachos with jalapeno slice stuck on scattered around the cup don't look very nice either.

This would have looked way nicer without the liberal mayo spread. Doesn't really communicate party food as this can easily be a dinner for one. Guac is hidden underneath the tacos and doesn't really add much to the dish. I didn't really see any dazzle in this one at all. Ironically your entry for last week would have warranted a perfect score for this round.

There's something really out-of-kilter about the whole ensemble. The tortillas look like overcooked puffed pitta bread. I feel the salsa could have done without the sweetcorn for taste and aesthetics. The dip I'm most keen on is the bean one. It's certainly party food, though more like for an intimate gathering of friends; the way this has been imagined and served would be more suited to - and more forgiving among - fewer people.
>>
>>7658154

"Party food" doesn't just mean a big platter of shareable stuff, and unlike fantastic, not everybody was actually cooking for a party.

It's unrealistic to expect people cooking something for themselves or for just a couple other people to make a giant spread.

Not looking to change your score, but as >>7658196 said, I made only a small amount since I didn't want to eat tortilla chips for the rest of the week. For a real party, I would have went with bigger amounts.
>>
>>7658196
I didn't score in terms of portion size. I scored for what I interpret as party food, food that makes me "think of [a] good time with the people you like having around". I appreciate it's unreasonable for a contestant to make a heap of food if it won't end up actually feeding lots of people at a real life occasion. I felt Yellowmug's and CookingRei's dishes didn't wholly meet the challenge goals and communicate my perception of party food, and I'd have given fantastic the same score even with a much smaller batch of cupcakes.
>>7658216
For your dish, Dice, I perceive tortillas and dips to be food best suited to a small and close low-key gathering. It's messy and not very practical enough for a bigger party. I just don't think chip and dip really pushes the envelope enough to convey the wow-factor that party food, in its most excitable and social sense, would demand. You made a good dish no doubt, but that's why I voted the way I did.
>>
>>7658461

>gargling on Yellowmug's style-over-substance dick this much
>>
>>7658461

You are entitled to your score, it just seems like had yellowmug made a couple full sized pizzas and cut them into little slices, and had Rei made a full platter of tacos, you would have voted differently. With Dice's entry you pretty much flat out said you took off a point because of the amount of food, even though chips and dip is a quintessential party food.

Eyepatch here. I made "420 Blaze It Faggot BBQ Chicken". The BBQ sauce was made with weed butter in it, and the marinade for the chicken had beer in it. Two classic party elements. I chose BBQ because that was the number one food we used to have when I used to go to parties. I'll post the recipes for both the marinade and the BBQ sauce in a sec. Timestamp and identifier are also incoming. I have pics of the weed butter and BBQ sauce cooking, but those are on another camera that I will get to later. 7 grams of ground up weed (I actually used around 8 and a half)

Boil the water on high heat. Once water is boiling, turn down the heat to medium and the butter. After the butter is melted, add the ground up weed. Let simmer for 1-3 hours.

I had to keep adding water while it was cooking because I had never made that small of a batch before and there kept on being more weed than liquid, and I didn't want the weed to burn.

I live in Canada. So technically here we have Caesars not Bloody Mary's. I think the addition of clam juice might be the only difference.

Anyway, yeah you can get them at pretty much any restaurant here. You can measure the 'hipness'/'trendiness' of a place by how much useless shit they cram into the top of the drink. There's a place near my house that sells a pitcher for like $60 with everything under the sun sticking out of it. Pic related is a more moderate one.

I'm not sure how traditional clam juice is in a Bloody Mary, but Clamato is used a lot of places.

>I'm not sure how traditional clam juice is in a Bloody Mary, but Clamato is used a lot of places.

>A Caesar or Bloody Caesar is a cocktail created and primarily consumed in Canada. It typically contains vodka, Clamato (a proprietary blend of tomato juice and clam broth), hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce, and is served with ice in a large, celery salt-rimmed glass, typically garnished with a stalk of celery and wedge of lime. What distinguishes it from a Bloody Mary is the inclusion of clam broth.

You're honestly going to try to argue that weed is a party drug? The only age I ever saw it being being smoked at a party by a significant crowd is high school, where people weren't allowed to smoke at home.

Everyone smokes weed when they get back from the party, so they can eat a bunch of shit and pass out.

Obviously different people have different experiences. Rei grew up going to parties with in-n-out and tacos, for example.

I remember going to parties with my parents in elementary school where the adults would all get high after dinner, and my friend and I would go around collecting all the roaches. It was obviously prevalent at high school parties, college parties, and not uncommon at grad school parties for there to be a circle of people passing around a joint.

Now as an "adult" I go to things like dinner parties and people will get high.
>>
>>7659529
Wrong. My 30 year old straight laced boss just smoked weed for the first time a few weeks ago. Guess where he was at when he smoked it? A party! Like I said, it's probably just more common in legal or close to it areas. I've known old people that refer to the act of smoking weed as "partying" and ask people if they "party" when they want to smoke with them. Just because you go to different types of parties doesn't mean that it's not happening elsewhere.
>>
>>7659465
>Have you ever watched a tv show, movie...
This is how retarded people glean information.
ProTip: Movies and TV aren't (are you sitting down?) real life.

Not trying to knock >>7658778 's entry. Pot is NOT, and has NEVER been a party drug. People smoke it at parties, AFTER doing coke or drinking a bunch of booze, or X or molly or whatever you kids are calling MDMA these days. It's like saying you're going to a GHB or horse tranquilizer party. It's an oxymoron.

Again, I think the entry 3/5 for goal (not a voter, just sayin'), and I could see there being pot at a party, but it certainly isn't a go to party drug.
>>
>>7659553

Saying pot isn't a party drug is like saying alcohol isn't a party drug. People who enjoy it are going to do it to make a situation more enjoyable, so of course they're doing it at parties.

I don't even see how this is an issue. Pot is a party drug and bbq chicken is a party food. What I've never seen at a party is a plate of chicken covered in green goo.

This whole thing is a weird conversation. Yes party drugs are coke, mdma etc., but I don't think that's the kind of party that Bubble was talking about. . .

Now to drop in my 2 cents

As an adult, when I think party, I think of a couple beers, some finger food, and chatting with friends.

When I think pot, I think sitting on the couch alone watching movies.
>>
>>7659606

>everything represents a party to someone

Nobody ever said that. Just because you didn't grow up with tacos, or pizza parties, or chips and dip being ubiquitous at social gathering involving food, doesn't mean it's completely arbitrary

This is the food and cooking board, and if you've spent any time here you surely must have learned something about what people from different places eat. Someone said they haven't seen weed at a party since high school. But I haven't seen cupcakes at a party since 5th grade.

Regardless, this entire drug discussion is off topic as fuck and should be dropped.

Congrats on proving that weed is indeed a party drug, faglord
>>
>>7659644

If you look at the scores eyepatch was basically out whatever they did, and probably just made something fun for the heck of it.
>>
>>7659666
eliminations are based on round score, not cumulative. No one is out yet
>>
>>7659670

Damn, I just looked at the farthest right column (cumulative) and figured that was the deciding score.

I guess people are eliminated on shows like Chopped on a round by round basis. Is the final round going to be the same, or somehow factor in cumulative score?

Sorry what? Weed is like the least party drug out of all the drugs. And what did I walk into here isn't this a cooking board?

>>7659666
I've been making something fun for the heck of it this entire time, satan. I'm honestly surprised that I made it this far.

I always keep it real. I like all the entries except for the weed one, but there's no point in saying anything about it since I have no constructive criticism to share, its simply personal tastes. I understand some people get off to putting down strangers on Scottish juicing secrets forums but that is not really my thing.
>>
>>7661133
Look. Part of criticism is listing the bad with the good. That's how improvement is made. If you want to cherry pick just the good, then other people might as well cherry pick just the bad. It's not putting people down when they're valid points. You can have a vagina and a negative opinion, they aren't mutually exclusive.

I'm really struggling to find any merit to this dish. The sauce looks gross and thick and like a bad gravy. It completely covers up the chicken to look like a brown faecal mess. I begrudgingly give you some points for using both beer and weed as ingredients that represent the party focus, but it's a real stretch to therefore call this party food.

Alright, I have made my decision.

The two competitors who will NOT be moving on to the final rounds are. . . .

YELLOWMUG and EYEPATCH.

Please hand in your jackets.

EYEPATCH. Really great competition. You have a knack for creativity and pastry.Your camera could have been a little better, but nevertheless. You've improved throughout the competition, and I hope you have some added confidence to continue cooking in the future. You just simply weren't quite as good a chef as the top 4.

YELLOWMUG. What can I say. I feel that dreadful circumstances brought you here. Circumstances that quickly spiraled out of your control. I'm not going to make assumptions about what stated the Yellowmug meme, and only comment on your skills as a chef.
You brought a sense of fun into the kitchen. The technical skills will come with practice, I'm sure, but you have an element to your cooking that makes me hope we'll see you in upcoming years. We truly never knew what was going to come out on the plate.

NACK, COOKINGREI, FANTASTIC, EYEPATCH. Congratulations, but the work is not done yet. Get home, get some sleep. The competition only gets more difficult from this point on.

I'm not personally a fan of fondant and I would have liked to have seen more thought go into the actual cupcakes. Still, it looks good and it's genuine party food.

A lot of nice colours - the cheese sauce is a really nice yellow - but I'm not sure how good the dips would actually be. The salsa doesn't look quite saucy enough and the bean look quite dry.

The presentation isn't appealing for this one. It just looks like a mess of brown and there are no accompaniments to go with the chicken. The sauce looks too thick and I can't see this being on someone's plate at a party.

If you're not the same person that's been spamming the 5/20 votes for yellowmug, at least explain why his dish, which had a taco, got half the challenge goal points as Rei, who also did a taco?

"I don't see the point and am entitled to my opinion" seems like bullshit, and people should be called out on their bullshit when it seems this biased.

I think they were both good entries, but some of the voting is just getting blatantly dumb at this point.

Round 9 - Sliders [Nack].jpg
432 KB, 1632x1224
Party food to me is what I'd typically see on the Super Bowl game day with my buddies; wings, chips, hotdogs, and my favorite, sliders.

Homemade sesame bun, and from bottom to top you have lettuce, jalapeno fries, patty, havarti cheese, tomato, pickle, and fried onion.

They're ideal for a party because they're bite sized. When you're partying you're going to be met with all different kinds of food you want to try, but if they're too large you'll fill up fast. Bite sized is where you want it. Try a little bit of everything without the need to finish a full sized portion.

Gonna finish the dishes and get to bed. Night all. Vertical tomorrow.

I'm all for homemade sesame buns, but it looks like you should have given them another hour to rise, and baked them a bit longer. They look like those 100 calorie sandwich thins. The cheese looks half melted yet greasy, and the lettuce looks wilted. Maybe you forgot to mention the sauce, but it otherwise looks pretty dry, and the presentation is a bit sloppy and basic. I'd still consider it party food, and would be happy to see a plate of those if I were dragged to a party and wasn't expecting to have a good time. Both fried onions and jalapenos is a bit overkill on a slider, and setting out a platter at a party I'd expect them to get soggy.
