You can cook all vegetables in the microwave, because they all contains enough water to cook themselves. Potatoes contain enough water to gelatinize their own starch, so you don't really have to do a lot. Some people poke holes in it because the water can go above boiling and turn into steam which can rupture/explode the potato sometimes. Holes can help prevent that and let the steam escape.
