I don't eat much American cheese, but honestly, every once in awhile, I crave it on a grilled cheese or ham and cheese sandwich. IDK why, just do. But I buy the Kraft Deli Deluxe (or American from the deli section), not the prewrapped Kraft singles. Kraft singles don't really taste like American cheese, they taste like....plastic, basically.

i hate when i go to a decent restaurant and their "better" cheeseburger has a brioche bun and farmhouse cheddar or something. american cheese is what belongs on a cheeseburger - anything else ruins it.
it's pretty easy to turn 'good' cheese into american cheese, too. all you need is sodium citrate, and you can make that out of a baking soda/citric acid solution.

Also it melts just fine. I only ever flip my burger patties once when I'm cooking. Once I flip it I stick a slice of room temperature cheddar on top. Cook through the rest of the patty, take it off the heat and onto the bun. By the time you prep and remaining ingredients and add condiments the patty is rested and that cheese is melted and much more delicious than baby cheese, as my mother used to call it.

Sharp cheddar is SHIT for burgers.
Mild cheddar is pretty unacceptable, unless very well melted.
Colby jack is SHIT in all applications.
Moz is pretty fair, burger wise.
I really prefer the garbage slices, but only ever buy mild cheddar/have burgers once a month.

Thank you for your uneducated opinion. I'm guessing by "sharp" cheddar you mean mature. I use mature cheddar on absolutely all my burgers. I tried it once and immediately realised what a mistake I'd made using american cheese until then.
No idea why americans think american cheese is better for burgers. It doesn't taste like cheese, it doesn't even taste good. Yeah it melts better, so what? An ice cube would melt better than cheddar, doesn't mean I'm gonna put it in my burger.
