Wild rice has excellent flavor and when cooked properly some of the best texture in the world of rice. Also, not sure what you mean by "passable with the right heat," wild rice goes incredibly well in creamy/savory dishes like a cream based chicken and wild rice soup.

Thai jasmine is my preferred general-purpose rice. It's good and it's inexpensive.
Carolina Gold kicks the crap out it it flavor-wise, but alas it's a lot more expensive. I've also had some really great rice when traveling in Japan but I don't know what the type was.
