Hey /ck/, tell me about your local dishes.

This is a Halifax donair. It's similar to a gyro, except the meat is pure ground beef and has different spices. Toppings are diced tomatoes, onion, and donair sauce (made from evaporated milk, vinegar, and garlic powder). A super donair adds pepperoni and shredded mozzarella, but there's debate as to whether these count as "true" donairs. You can get them in most pizza shops in Atlantic Canada.

You can also get donair meat as a pizza topping. Or a full donair pizza, where tomato sauce is replaced by donair sauce. I've seen donair subs, fries, and even egg rolls as well.
>>
I'm from chicago

All the local food here is apparently a huge meme on /ck/

We also have garlic fingers, kind of like garlic bread. It's basically pizza dough, topped with garlic butter and cheese. They're typically dipped in donair sauce. We really love donair sauce.

Looks and sounds good. Would definitely try.

Is it used a gyro machine? Easy to recreate?
>>
>>7807873
I've lived Edmonton for a few years where donairs are quite popular and I've seen one that looks like it was topped with straight-up cum like that one.
>>
>>7808796

Yeah if you can make gyros you can make this. It's the same thing, just with different meats/spices. A gyro spit would be best, but I've heard of people cooking them in a normal home oven. Not sure how they turned out though.

https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/~gpetitpas/Links/Donair.html

Haven't tried any of these, but it was compiled by an actual Haligonian rather than the food network so it's probably credible.

>>
>>7808819
The thing about Donairs here is that they're so inconsistent. Some places are amazing, some are okay, some are trash.
What's the best one you've had?
When I used to go to NAIT, there was a place nearby on 118th ave in the same complex as Value Village, Mac's, and the Liquor Depot. So fucking delicious. That was 8 years ago, so not sure if it's still around.
Worst I've had was the crappy donair place in the food court at Mill Woods TC. I don't know how it's been open for so long. Robin's Donuts was there before this place which was way better.

1. Donair is a specific variant of döner
2. The sauce is a mixture of sweetened condensed milk, garlic and vinegar.

Primetime donair was my ticket for awhile, tossed the meat in wing sauce.

The one by NAIT is still around, LAN's grill has pretty cheap / godly pho in that same complex.

I live in Mill woods, and Primetime is my go to. It's Okay. The one on 17th st. is better than the one at MW Main Street. I don't feel like going all the way to the Northside to get those god tier donairs, so Primetime it is.

Baltimore pit beef, nigga. That's all I gotta say, and you already know.
>>
Here in Minnesota, we have "hot dish". It's basically ground beef, tomato sauce, and pasta. Sometimes vegetables like onion and carrot are added, but in my experience, it's typically not seasoned at all. I don't know what it is about this place and our extreme aversion to anything with flavor, but I hate it.
We also have various """""salads""""", which are basically anything - from broccoli to snickers bars - mixed with obese amounts of sour cream and mayonnaise. The salad bars that you see in a typical restaurant here are downright depressing. You get lettuce, maybe two other vegetables, and 10 different """"salads"""".

We got a lot of Cornish folk around Wisconsin way back, especially around the Upper Peninsula(okay, so technically that's Michigan, but they're totally our people.) One of the things they brought with them is pasty. Not to be confused with the stickers strippers put over their nipples, it's basically a shepherd's pie with rutabaga, potato, onion and beef, inside a crisp crust.

"Liver cheese" or in this case "Cheesy Liver cheese" is pretty popular in Austria. You usually buy a slice in a Vienna roll, with some mustard or ketchup and/or pickles. Usually made from beef and pork, though horse meat is also traditional in Vienna.
