It probably came from German immigrants. The word for Germany in German sounds like Dutch, so a lot of the things that are called Dutch in America are actually German, for instance the Dutch Amish are actually German. We, being good Americans, never bothered to correct this mistake after finding out because that would be admitting we got something wrong, and that is completely un-American. Martin's potato rolls are the only thing I buy. Regular hamburger and hot dog rolls taste and feel like shit to me, as well as potato rolls from other brands. I also like their bread. Same thing, only in bread form. Don't get me wrong, I like a hearty multigrain bread but their potato bread makes the comfiest of 'white bread' sammiches.
