Have you had any experience with "American" food outside of America?

This is American Fried Rice in Thailand. It's made with fried chicken, ham, hot dogs, raisins, ketchup, and croutons.

Mexico here too, it is hit and miss. One winner is a burger place here that actually puts fried ham along with bacon and cheese on a burger.

Tex-mex food in Germany
>magaritas on point
>order food, ordered enchiladas
>food comes out, basically paella (wut)
>lima beans (wut) and corn everywhere
>whole pickled jalapenos decking the entire side of dish
>some chicken mixed in with paella

But in the end I just ate it and since I was with my german friends I thanked them for taking me some place that felt like home (the thought was what mattered most).

It wasn't tex-mex, but I'm glad someone thought enough to take me to it.

You heard me. It's all family barbecues with flags and corn eating on a wooden table.
>>
>>7624477
I would guess that you're not cooking them at a high enough heat. The sear should help it hold together. Also, if too much water comes out and stays in the pan, it will not only smell funny but the meat will begin to stew which will cause it to fall apart.

>>

Modern pizza is just about the most American food you can get outside of hamburgers. Let's not get nerdy romantic about ancient Rome and a couple of leaves and cheese on bread.
>>
>>7624477
I want to help you, but I can't even guess what you're doing wrong.

The only thing I can guess is the quality of meat you're buying is awful.
>>
>>7624487
First off, I don't know about that.

Second, in BBQ pictures they're eating corn because it's BBQ food. Shouldn't all these pizzas be covered with pulled pork or hamburgers instead.
>>
>>7624521
>Shouldn't all these pizzas be covered with pulled pork or hamburgers instead.
They are, but those are two different varieties of American pizzas. The corn is a base ingredient like the tomato sauce and cheese. In fact the tomato sauce is sometimes a barbecue sauce so corn is more of a baseline of American pizza than the sauce.
>>
>>7624521
No because that would make sense on an "American style" food

Course I mean it's nice to know that the rest of the world is just ignorant about other cultures they claim us to be.
>>
>>7624521
It's not just at a BBQ, every time you are shown eating as a family there is always a tray of corn with the meal.
>>

>>7624840
Usually on salads like cobb salad or as a dip with crudites but it's offered as a condiment with chicken nuggets at lots of major fast food restaurants, and people do dip their fries in it. Fried pickles are a must with it in the south. It's also not unheard of to pour it over pizza. Basically anything greasy and fried goes good with it. Or if you're feeling extra American just chug that shit.

BBQ is absolutely a strong part of American culture. If our culture is going to be appropriated, seems like the right way to do it.

If you are actually ignorant and not just kidding, though, no, it's not exclusive. It's actually (for most) a minority of meals. Just the best meals.

When I was in high school I cooked almost everything I ate on the grill, though.

It was never corn.

>>
>>7624637
They're right, and I don't know what the anon you're responding to is tripping on.

The point of the hamburger is the beef, and what you put on top of the beef. Egg takes away from the beef, and is also completely unnecessary to the creation of a patty.

I mean, if you for some reason like the flavor of egg in your ground beef, by all means, you do you. It will make your hamburgers weird to most people, though.

>Now why would you imply I was using cheap meat like that?
Not him, but if you're the one whose patties are falling apart and whose meat smells weird, low-grade or old beef is about the only thing I can think of.

Though >>7624488 might be right. I've never cooked a burger on low heat, so I can't be sure.

>When I see Americans make burgers it seems much more paste like, mushy.
At a fast food place, sure. At any actual restaurant -- even chains -- definitely not.

Anyone with any ability whatsoever to make a hamburger is going to handle the meat very minimally, so it ends up being a loosely-packed collection of ground texture. Nothing mushy at all.

You could definitely mash and handle the meat long enough it turned in to mushy goop, though, and a lot of processed places essentially do that. That's someone who is a total idiot, though. Even awful cooks don't do it, and it doesn't happen accidentally. It's literally failing on purpose.
>>
>>7624809
That is so much more accurate to stereotyping us than putting corn on pizza.

Good job, Holland. I'm adding this to the things I love about you.

Also, I just realized I don't actually know what goes in ranch dressing. However, if you put it on everything, you can call it American and we can't actually argue with you.

Takeout containers, plastic cups, plastic dinner ware, napkins in bathrooms, the amount of disposable items we have for every task is crazy.
>>
>>7624840
Fries is actually a good guess, because it's a really, really common choice of dipping sauce for fries. Same for chicken tenders.

Mainly, it's for salad. Almost every American restaurant you go to has a salad with ranch dressing as an option, often the only option.

Chicken/turkey with bacon and ranch (and usually cheddar) is a common combo for stuff like sandwiches.

Then there are a lot of people who like the anon above says just plain put it on everything. EVERYTHING. Hot dogs, hamburgers (which is actually really good and common, to be fair), pizza, chips, tuna, carrots, ham, steak. . .

>It must be a local thing.
It must be, and by that I mean that you DON'T do ranch as a condiment.

Everywhere I've ever been -- to varying degrees, to be fair -- has ranch as a condiment. That's about 30 states, having lived in eight different cities, and traveling constantly. Ranch is pretty close to as generic American food as you can get.

That said, I would believe there are pockets of the country that somehow don't have them. Sort of like Utah, Idaho, and eastern Washington and Oregon have packaged fry sauce just about everywhere and the rest of the country doesn't.

Deep dish pizza in Tokyo at DevilCraft. Not as good as in Chicago obviously but still very good and a welcome break from the millions of Italian pizza places in the city.

Small is insanely small (the diameter of an iPhone) but the large with the amazing craft beer is plenty for two people. The place was always packed even after they opened a second location so I expect deep dish pizza to start catching on more in Tokyo in the next few years

I've almost never seen it on the east coast, but pretty much every single burger place in Japan offers it. I tried it a few times and just felt it was an unnecessary expense. The taste changed, but it didn't add much to the burger so was never worth the extra money.

It's actually pretty good, just obviously has nothing to do with Texas. Here's another bit of "Texan" fast food (McDonalds).

Beef patty, 2 slices cheddar, pepperoni, batavia lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo, spicy tomato sauce, topped with chili flakes and dill

The crust is easily 1.5 times as thick as pizza hut, and if you know how thick PH crust is you'd know that's way too fucking thick.

The first place I ever saw an egg on a burger in the US was Red Robin with the Royal Red Robin burger. It's been there at least since the mid-90s. Used to be my go-to.

I know I've seen it elsewhere in recent years, though I can't give you spots off the top of my head. I remember somewhere advertising, "breakfast on a burger?" but can't remember where. There are a couple, "gourmet," burger places down here (Orlando) that do it on at least one burger.
>>
>>7625117
This is just my favorite thing. Because I know we do this to other country's food, so it's wonderful to see them do the same.

Texas is not an awful description for this, but it's still pretty funny. It's just that Texas bbq is more beef, oriented than chicken, and I want to know what the sauce is like before I call it Texan.

Still, though, the corn is just the most hilarious fucking thing.

It's not really trying to be a "Texan" pizza. As in, it's not trying to be a pizza you'd have in Texas. It's just a pizza with some fairly generic barbecue sauce instead of a tomato sauce and usually a few different meats on top.

"Americana" pizza from Pizza Hut in Poland

champignons, mozzarrella, tomatoes, tomato sauce
>>
>>7625154
Without the pepperoni, this kind of makes sense.

If you told me to make a Texas burger, I'd probably just use a fuck huge patty, top it with pepper jack cheese, some jalapeños, a couple onion rings, and cover it in BBQ sauce.

For non-Americans, Texas's big "things" are: shit is huge, BBQ, beef, and spicy. That's literally it.

It is most likely 2 thing. Meat/fat ratio should be close to 80% lean to 20% fat. The fat acts as a binder. Coarseness of grind maybe too fine or too chunky. I don't grind my own meat because I'm American and can get delicious ground chuck anytime. But if I was in a non burger country I'd look into it. A burger should never need binder. Also don't over handle the meat. Doesn't need to be a perfect shaped patty don't squeeze hard.

One of the best things I learned -- and it took me 30 years of life before I trusted someone to try and -- is start with a loosely packed ball, and only make it a patty by pressing down when it hits the heat.

And do it immediately. If you press a burger in the first few seconds, you'll get even crust without losing juice.

Never looked back since I started forming them that way.

Yeah, Eastern Washington is like this, too.

There are a TON of Mexican restaurants, because there's a rich history of migrant workers. There is a massive population of people who immigrated fairly recently in their family history from Mexico, to the point where in much of the east side of the state, latino is the majority, and you wouldn't be able to tell it from New Mexico or Texas.

They frequently make these authentic(ish) restaurants based on their family tradition, and very quickly learn they have to mild everything down for the tastes of local Whites and Asians, who can't handle anything past old black pepper. That's not an exaggeration, of all the places in this country I've spent time, no region is more averse to spice and flavor than the pacific northwest. Ruins the potential of a lot of restaurants.

>>
>>7627884
>Spice and flavour are well common and accepted on a lot of the western side, particularly around the Puget Sound area.

Don't lie to me. I've spent almost as much time on the west side as the east side, and local food is even more bland than the east side, and WAY more bland than most of the rest of the country. You're just trying to make your home region sound good.

The exception is the sea food. The sea food is great. People absolutely know how to prepare fish out here, and fish is something that benefits from minimal seasoning. They don't get credit for how good the local stuff swimming around is, though.
>>
>>7627887
It surprises me a little, because other countries complain about it happening to their own culture so much, I would kind of expect them to be above doing it themselves.

The thing is, I see absolutely nothing wrong with hilarious cultural re appropriation -- at least with something harmless like food -- and love seeing it.

That right there is really close to accurate, though. Only difference is that Chicago deep dish -- which is awful, by the way -- uses crust traditionally that is more like flaky pie crust, and the ingredients are layered more like a mixture, rather than the 1-2-3 formula of most pizza where sauce is always strictly on the bottom and cheese is always strictly after that.
>>
>>7627899

Well, obviously that's going to be bland as fuck.

There's plenty of ethnic places that don't "mild down" their food, though. Unless it's seafood, I don't much bother with local fare. I'm a gook anyway, and there are a fuckton of other Asians here so ethnic is my usual.

>>
>>7627923
>Well, obviously that's going to be bland as fuck.
But that's not obviously, because it's not true for much of the rest of the country.

In the other states I've spent the bulk of my time (Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, California, Florida, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina), a Mexican family can start a restaurant and still have salsa that isn't just tomatoes and onions.
>>
>>7627918
The difference is that Americans take real traditional foods, make a complete travesty of them and then try to pass them off as the real thing instead of just a generic thing form the country.

If they were just generic "taste of France" type products then nobody would care. Instead you label local ripoffs as the PDO originals.
>>
>>7627924
No, corn kernels are disgusting.

>>7627926
Did you miss the whole part about seafood? About how good it is when it's NOT spiced out?

Mexican food is SUPPOSED to be full of spices. It's part of the whole deal. If you CAN'T appreciate that, the problem lies with you.

Same thing with the northwest's attempt at barbecue, btw.
