Hey everyone. Just recently turned 21 wondering what is a good place to start with liqueurs and alcohol in general. Picked up a bottle of whiskey and vodka but have no idea what good brands and what to make with them.
>>
>>7606233
I mix my vodka with soda or seltzer water
>>
>>7606261
So far I've just tried orange juice and vodka. It's really the only thing I know about. Also someone told me tullamore dew was a good whiskey so that's what I got
>>
>21
For you Four Loco and Corona.

Just kidding, but anyway you're asking a crazy broad question, almost as silly as saying "I've just started eating food and I don't know what to make with them." Alcohol comes in so many categories and moods.

For Whiskey I'd say Whiskey Sour, if it's a good whiskey you might want to try and Old Fashioned but keep in mind that's an old man's drink and you probably won't like it until you're a full blown alcoholic. Don't drink Jack and Coke, that's a shitty drink and I think it's only popular because they're so popular and ubiquitous.

Vodka is vast so very vast. Bloody Mary's, White Russians, Moscow Mule, the whole Martini thing. Vodka can pretty much add to anything. My favorite is a Salty Dog.

For you I'd suggest trying a real Margarita. Cointreau, Gold Tequila, Fresh Lime Juice. Margarita's get a bad wrap because of the Americanized over sugared crap. A real Margarita tastes incredible and gets you buzzed nicely.
>>
Also as a side note for anyone who comes here I am allergic to barley so don't recommend beer. Tastes like shit anyways

Missing out if you never try a Wheat Beer.
>>
If you're mixing vodka just buy the cheapest, you can't tell the difference. Bushmills is a good mild and inexpensive Irish whisky to get you started.

I did try a gluten free beer, Literally tasted like I took a clump of dirt and grass and ate it
>>

Please shut up. Look I agree no bottle of Vodka should ever cost more than $40 but there's a tremendous difference from a big brand Vodka (Absolute, Belvedere, Kettle One) and the fucking rotgut like Barton's.

I would never go cheaper than Smirnoff.
>>
>>7606333
No, not if you're mixing with something strongly flavored like juices.

Pic related. Could crack open my Glenfiddich 12 but it felt like a beer night.

Whiskey? I agree with anyone suggesting the Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour. If you can't handle that, maybe Whiskey and Cola, but I would splurge and get "real" cola; something flavored with kola nut. The extra bite really adds to it.

For the vodka, just add it to things you already like. Best way to do it.

I feel like I learned this way too late in life. I used to hang out with some real scumbags and we'd drink the absolute cheapest shit we could get, just to get drunk. I spent a decade living like a tramp.

Now I've got a bit of self-respect, I also draw the line at Smirnoff, and I'll usually only drink that if I'm already drunk.

You owe it to yourself to turn down those industrial accidents on the bottom shelf that are there for broke alcoholics who have no choice. You'll feel way fucking better if you spend less time pissed, but do it on better stuff.

That said, fuck buying the silly priced shit. Unless you're desperate to impress someone or a multi-millionaire, aim for decent. Not astronomical, not gutter trash, just fine.

For bourbon try Buffalo Trace. It's reasonable inexpensive and good mixed or on its own. I like it in manhattans or with ginger beer

Go to a cocktail bar and try different mixed drinks like a gin and tonic, or a dark and stormy. It's cheaper that way and they use better ingredients. Once you know what you like you can buy the liquors that are in it.
>>
>>7610562

Astronomical price is a meme for all liquors, beers, and wines. Vodka, perfect example, has tiers. First tier (real tier not drinking petrol) is rot gut like skol. Rail or house liquor at dive bars, kids getting drunk at parties while underage and v&. 10 dollars per handle maybe.

Second tier is smirnoff. More expensive but still bretty damn cheap, no real problems with it per se. Can be drank straight but usually isn't except for by alcoholics. 20 dollars per handle is common.

Third tier is flawless vodka. Grey goose, belvedere, hangar 10. It's so smooth it tastes like softened water. The alcohol bite is so minimal you have trouble believing it's 40 percent. Any hangover or bad feeling is purely from bingeing. Can be put in mixed drinks but unless minimally done that's a shameful waste. Better off straight or with a splash of lemon on the rocks.

The price of third tier is where people go wrong. Goose is 70ish a handle but doesn't need to be, that's marketing costs. Lower brands with equal quality maybe 60 dollars stateside. Some total unknown here like pic related, White Birch vodka from russia, is like 50 dollars a handle if you can find it. In a blind test, not even a big drinker would know it's not goose.

This meme is repeated in some way or another for all alcohol. Other more flavorful kinds have more variety but none escape the tier system, only hope to confuse you with fancy words and paid-for media reviews.

I'm an amateur. Can someone explain why certain drinks call for certain alcohols? Like why a daiquiri is always made with rum? I could not even begin to tell the difference between gin, rum and vodka behind all the fruit flavor in a daiquiri. Is there REALLY a difference when you're making mixed drinks like that?
>>

This, 25 is generally the threshold where sitting around treating your body like garbage starts to finally kick in. If you stay somewhat active and eat well you'll likely not notice it as much, but if you spend all day on the computer and eat garbage you'll start feeling it more.
>>

If someone made my daiquiri with tequila or gin, it would be extremely noticeable.

Vodka in particular does not have much flavor, and as such, is used in most cheap mixed drinks.

Gin, rum, and tequila all have very distinct unique flavors that they lend to a drink.
