There's a busy avenue that runs through my town with a Dunkin Donuts, a McDonald's, and a Popeyes on it. This road experiences interstate level traffic (it's a highway on either end, they just can't upgrade the city portion of the road) at rush hour and it's covered in traffic lights. It's not uncommon to get stuck for 5-10 minutes at a single light as traffic stacks up and only a handful of cars can get through an intersection.
Now, the McDonald's got renovated about 6 years ago to look just like the one in OP's pic, while the Popeye's and DD look like they came straight out of 1992 with linoleum and laminate everywhere.
The McD's easily pulls 2-3 times as many customers as either of the other stores, just because of the way it looks. These kinds of stores make their real money on people buying drinks and small items on a whim, so looking good for some bozo in traffic is essential. It's actually reached the point that the DD a couple buildings down has been completely renovated (now pulls a constant stream of drive through customers, all day) and the Popeye's has been completely demolished so they can build a new one.
The experience at McD's isn't half bad either. The place constantly asks for customer reviews in exchange for free items and the food comes quick while looking like you would expect it to. The limiting factor right now would probably be the ingredients, which of course suffer from McD's across-the-board policy of being cheap fucks.

They've been in the process of renovating their outlets throughout the country, plus you can use touchscreens to make your own burger, and you get fries delivered in little deep fryer baskets instead of the regular packet. Those kiosks don't go down often, and when they function properly they: never show up late to work, never call in sick, never fuck up a customer's order. Sheetz and Wawa have been utilizing ordering kiosks instead of employees for at least 10 years. They're extremely effective.

I like the kiosks they have now. Makes it much smoother, and any fuckups are actually provable and are entirely on the workers end, assuming the customer actually used it right.
Also enjoy being able to actually see the whole menu instead of having to wait 10 seconds, read part of the menu, then wait another 10 fucking seconds

The best McDicks locations I've come across were in Eastern Europe. Basically the food there is targeting middle-class folks so everything is super clean, often they're based in older buildings that still have marble on the walls, the people are usually somewhat well off for the local population, or at least people who have some money.
