Prickly pear/Opuntia or whatever it's called in english, here we call it frangosyka (Frank figs).

I don't imagine it's regularly consumed in many countries but it's a treat over here even if you can't eat many of them for health reasons.

>>
why does dragonfruit taste like nothing? did i just buy one off-season?
>>
>>7581120
There are the ones that are white and others are purple inside. The White ones are pretty bland I don't know about the others.
>>
>>7581120

Most I've had are pretty bland, but they definitely have a distinct flavor to them.

Like avocados, if they were shipped too far and not ripened properly they can taste like nothing, whereas a good one can be delicious.
>>
>>7581120

if you buy them fresh off the market in sea then yeah, they do taste like something, but compared to the mangoes they have over there or other exotics like durian or mangosteen they taste real fucking bland.

they're nice in other contexts, for example the thai make real nice shakes out of them with finely crushed ice, syrup, lime juice and a whole dragonfruit in a food processor.

>>

We have the red ones, you need heavy gloves and pliers or other tools to clean them, or at least that's how most people do it. My grandma is a master at cleaning them.

A friend of mine ate the better part of a bucket of them and had go to the hospital, I ate the other part of said bucket and couldn't function for a couple of days. Still worth it.

Tangerine, followed by Peach, But I love almost every fruit, except Cantaloupe and Pinnaple
>>
>>7581711
What in the shit are you talking about? Have you ever even had waraka? It tastes like neither peaches nor pineapples. Its texture is not anywhere near as fibrous as pineapple, either.

The taste of ripe waraka seed pods (the yellow parts around the seeds inside the latex-making flesh) is like a cross between mango, sweet banana and canteloupe with a smooth texture, like rehydrated-from-dry shiitake mushrooms. The flesh of ripe waraka is inedible, but the seeds are boiled and roasted. The taste is blandish/sweetish.

The taste and texture of unripe waraka (polos) is mushroom-y, though some say meaty.

Source: grew up eating the things and actually have some in the house right now because I love them.
>>
>>7581782
I googled jackfruit and that's the first result because I don't know what the whole fruit looks like. I've only ever eaten it cut up into little cubes when I visited thailand once.
>>
>>7581460
also white nectarines. they make you wonder why yellow nectarines are even allowed to still exist
>>
>tfw you are prepared for them to be great and theyre fibery
>>
>>7581791
>cut up into little cubes to eat
That's impossible unless it was unripe, which you wouldn't be eating uncooked nor would anyone describe its taste even remotely fruity (as I said, it's kind of like mushroom). Cutting up ripe waraka would be like cutting up a pomegranate into little cubes to eat. Know how the white part of pomegranate isn't edible, but all the seed pods (and the seeds) are? Same with waraka. You remove the outer parts and the white inner parts and scoop out all the seed pods.
The seed pods are either served as they are or further cleaned up. If served just like that, you pop the seeds out of the pods and eat the pods themselves. If they're served already cleaned, the seeds are popped out and you're left with this little sack of deliciousness.

So I ask: are you sure that's what you ate? Because what you're describing couldn't possibly be waraka/jackfruit at all.
>>
>>7581889
It had the texture of pineapple, was bright yellow, but tasted more like peaches and not pineapple. It was very sweet. Maybe it wasn't jackfruit then.

Either sudukaw or yellow bittara, maybe? I don't know what they would be called in Thai. Give me a sec to find pictures or the name in English. I'm thinking it's probably bittara, though. That tastes kinda like peaches. While I don't think it has it, I wouldn't argue with someone who says it has a pineapple-like flavour. Also, it's yellow and can be cut into cubes to eat. The only problem I have with it is the texture, which is like a custard-y threeway point between apple, banana and kiwi and not fibrous like pineapple. Gimme a sec to find a picture for you.
>>
>>7581972
>>7581898
It's called eggfruit in English. Makes sense, considering that bittara also means egg. Look up eggfruit pictures and compare if that kinda looks like it might be what you had.
Also, look at your wakara picture in >>7581711
See the yellow things in the bottom right, just below the fruit itself? Those are the seed pods. They can be removed just like ones from a pomegranate can.
>>
I'm not sure exactly what it is but I abhor every fruit except apples. I can eat anything else I'll give it a try no matter what it is, but for some reason the texture of any fruit I've tried makes me gag. And the thing is I like the taste.
How do I enjoy fruit? I feel like I'm missing out but I honestly puked last time I had a grape.
Send help.
>>
>>7581994
>Canistel flesh is sweet, with a texture often compared to that of a hard-boiled egg yolk
It definitely didn't have that texture.

Ah well. I dunno what fruit I had then, but at least now I know it wasn't jackfruit/waraka.

It's just very very hard to digest prickly pear, meaning that eating even a couple will leave your bowel backed up and full of gases causing pain and massive shits. If you eat too many your bowels basically shut down and you need medical help.

Also to note that improperly cleaned prickly pear can literally kill you given that the little thorns are slightly poisonous so they mess you up once eaten.
