Hey al/ck/ies, I'm trying to get a job at a local pub in America as a bar-back/bus boy/runner/server. What do I need to know? Pic related is not the one I'm applying to, just an image off Google. I don't have any experience, I've never even had a job before. I am 21 though, and I've been reading Mr. Boston in my spare time. I also know someone who works at the place. What do?

Just get a pair of super comfortable all black sneakers.
I did all those jobs you listed. There's nothing you need to know other than wear comfy shoes and that niggers don't tip. Other than that you just have smile and not be a complete autist. Practice carrying dishes and glasses on a tray if you're uncoordinated and clumsy.

This is good, will do.

Do what you're told and don't argue. You're the lowest man on the totem pole, no one will listen to your opinions. If you work hard you will get respect.

if its been 10 minutes since your last cigarette break then its time for a cigarette break
make sure you never bring cigarettes just ask the cooks for them
make sure you drop a bunch of stuff and then tell them you need another one "on the fly" and don't give any reason and just run off
ask for food "on the fly" that you don't need and then go eat it in the dish pit near a trash can. if the managers are coming just toss it in the trash.
make sure you show up ~10 minutes late and always leave early so you don't have to do extra work.
whenever you want a red bull just go up to the bar and get a few and drink them out back
give out free drinks/food to customers so that they will tip better
as a waiter make sure you steal money off of other peoples tables and start a lot of drama with all of the other girls
spend most of your income on clothes drugs and alcohol. be a single parent with 3 kids from 3 different people and collect child support for all of them and spend it on dumb shit instead of the kids.
congrats you are ready for the food service industry

Someone had a pretty bad experience with employees. Luckily I don't smoke and I don't have kids. However I do plan to spend a significant portion of my income on videogames and alcohol.

come back after a month and reread my post. 90% of the people you will be working with are genuinely just total pieces of shit, felons, alcoholics, heroin/pill addicts and burnouts. most of the customers will be assholes, drunks and niggers that all treat you like you slapped their grandmother.
worst jobs ive ever had

I'm gonna be optimistic for now but I'm not gonna tolerate shittiness if I have it flung at me.
Make sure you get non-slip black sneakers not just any old pair of black sneakers you are going to be busting ass running back and forth between stations and setting up clean glassware for the next few hours and I guarantee there are going to be slips that would be way worse without those type of shoes
1. all black sneakers
2. 99% of waitresses, cooks and other are thiefs. Will steal money/drinks/food. NEVER GET YOURSELF INTO THAT.
3. Becouse you have dignity and self respect
4. They will also slack off.
5. look presentable. Smell nice, look neat, clean and ironed.
6. Never be rude.
7. Learn the menu at home. Ask cooks to explain dishes to you.
8. Be in good mood cash will flow. Positive energy and few jokes put smile on ppls faces that brings you tips.
9. Be fast as you can. More time to chit chat = more tips.
10. Get one of those long black wallets with belt clip so you can put it on your belt. Never trust anyone with money. Coworkers are thiefs once again.
11. Don't suck up to boss, just be respectfully and keep your distance.
12. Never spit in food or drink no matter the circumstances.
13. Keep wallet, bottle opener, pen and a lighter always at your side.
14. No one is gonna be your friend. Not a coworker not a customer. Friendships at work are extremely rare.
15. Learn wine list and at what temperature wine is served and other drinks as well.
Good luck!
Don't get bullied. Fresh meat always gets bullied.

What shithole do you work in? I tended bar when I was in school and worked with some great people, some of them are life long friends. I experienced none of what you described.
Alright. There's been a lot of good advice about what to do and what not to do once I'm hired. But what about actually getting hired? Are there any tricks to that?

He's got a point though, usually all the cooks are degenerates and all the waitstaff skanks

I worked at restaurant as college student. We had 5 waiters, three bartenders, one chef, two cooks and a baker in one shift. Total of 18 waiters & who knows how many cooks... Two people of total 50 employees I still talk to. That is a low % of quality ppl.
Good luck anyways.
tips for getting hired:
It's moist luck. Either they like you and then you work hard at job to keep it or either they don't like you and you don't even get a chance to say your name.
once I was told you have to work a week for free and then you get a job if you prove yourself.
turned out girl I was filling for was sick and soon as she got better (in that one week) they dumped me and I didn't got paid for slaving away for a week.
it's dog eat dog world I hope you have balls and lack of brains because your nerves will get thined out

haha u an idiot dude
appear that you are free and willing to spend time on that job, don't say anything negative about yourself, don't say you have other options, don't say you can't work Mondays for example (even if you really can't find a way to get days off at mondays after you get a job), be shaved and put on your best look, clean shirt and simple black pants, ask about conditions (work days, shifts, hours, what is expected of you...) if you don't ask anything you might seem clueless or not interested, seem positive, smile, energetic.
If you don't have experience don't lie you have. If they give you a chance go follow a coworker and ask everything you don't know, learn fast.
good luck
