lived in ny my whole life, never been to katzs. I don't think its an institution so much as a tourist trap but what do I know?
all I can tell you is the carnegie deli has similar levels of hype and I was disappointed as fuck by it

It's great as a deli, expensive though.
Many Jewish delis are, it's not an all the time thing, just once in awhile. Unless you want to stock up on smoked and salted meats and soup to freeze.
If you're Jewish, I can understand why you wouldn't go there often, but if you are, it's a lot of good food we grew up with. I tend to go to Carnegie more because it's close.
