i tried some wild turkey 101 as i've never had wild turkey before

it had a really strange taste to it something i've never experienced with bourbon almost a medicine/dr pepper taste and i didn't really enjoy it

i prefer jim beam small batch these days

i use to be a jd's man until i tried small batch and then jack daniels tasted to sweet

>>7463258
As you say it is overated, not to mention overpriced.
But it might be your thing, you wont know untill your try it.
It is a very mild, light and easy drinking bourbon, and as such doesnt draw much accoldade from seasoned bourbon drinkers.

I'm a big Makers Mark fan, I enjoy sipping it after a long day. I'd recommend it stored at room temperature and served with ice.

I always thought of WD101 as something unique, not quite Bourbon, almost a liqueur.

>>7463258
Elijah Craig is some tasty stuff, mate.

>>7464105
MM is a bit sweet for me. You really need to try pic related, it's my favorite now.

Jim Beam black is god tier in regards to taste vs price. Really good.
>>
>>7464154
A bit of water in whiskey opens up the flavor. Every time you try a new expensive whiskey, you should try it with some water.
>>
>>7464582
Thats a fair point but a lot of people seem to forget the "little bit" part. Thats why I like to put some ice in my glass instead of whiskey stones, with room temp bourbon/scotch. The ice melts a little bit, opening up the flavor and chilling it sightly but leaving just enough of the distinctive burn while still going down smooth.
>>
>>7464571
Looks like a nice bottle, I'll be sure to try it.

Basil Hayden's is alright, but I don't like the price. It's just Old Granddad that's been aged a bit longer. And I like OGD just fine in its 100 and 114 proof bottles.

>>7462959
Wild Turkey has a bit more rye in the mashbill than Jim and Jack. That's probably the taste you didn't like. It's also 101 proof which concentrates the flavor a bit more than your standard 80 proof bourbon.

Myself, apart from drinking the bottom shelf (OGD, Ezra Brooks, Old Crow, etc...), I love rye. I prefer it to scotch.

I think Colonel E.H. Taylor is the best bottle of any whiskey I've ever bought.

>>
>>7462949

would love to see what that stuff is actually like.

I am drinking Lagavulin 16, it is very well priced in Costco and I think it tastes really good. The stuff in Aldi is really good too, the 8 year old Highland Black is very good but the Glen Marnoch (un named distillery) is incredibly good, especially the Islay one
>>
>>7462949
I've been trying to find a review for this but the only ones I found didn't actually taste it
>>
>>7464679
How much did the Willet cost you? I have heard it is damn good and I have seen the 6 year a couple places but it is too damn expensive for me. I mean I have spent decent money on bourbon like Four Roses Single Barrel or Bookers, and they were worth it, but the two ryes I had weren't very good. They were Rendezvous Double Rye and Rittenhouse rye. I want to like rye but I can't seem to find one I like.

It is odd because I look at the flavor profiles and tasting notes of rye and they sound appealing to me but I am never satisfied.

Water helps open up flavors of whiskey and bourbon fyi
>>
>>7465126
Uhhh...

When it first came out, the 6 year old was like $42 after tax.

After they re-released it (they stopped doing the wax on the cork), the 4 was below $40, didn't like it at all, the 6 was around $50-$60 and the 8 was pushing $80.

Relying on memory, so figures might be off.

The 6 and the 8 were both completely worth it.

I'd get the 6 and instead of getting the 8, I'd go with E.H. Taylor if available.

Sorry guys just made a thread because I was too stupid to use the catalogue. Just had a bottle of Black Velvet 1974 come into my collection, anyone know anything about it?

>>7467762 I'm in Toronto and never come across Black Velvet before, any idea what to expect, what it's made from and if it's worth more to a BV fan? So far it seems like it's made specifically to export to the states and it's a cheap whisky you buy at costco? I'm not looking to rip someone off, but if it's a collectors item I'd rather flog it to a fan and put the money towards a Laphoriag or something.

Currently sipping Té Bheag (supposedly pronounced "Chay Vek")
This being as cheap as it is, is simply divine. You get that nice scotch taste with some peat but as soon as it goes down it gripes your mouth with some spice.
It's kind of blowing my mind right now, did not expect this kind of quality.

Knob Creek 9 vs. Elijah Craig 12

My favorite bourbons are the sweet wheaters; almond, marshmallow, marzipan, nougat. Oak is good; not a fan of too much rye. So which of the two above will I prefer?

Friends got me this for my birthday. Not hugely experienced with scotch but I'm enjoying this.

Better with water? Ice?
I've just been sipping it room temp
>>
>>7471132
I don't know if you're trying to give an honest analogy but it was shitty. Food relies on taste, alcohol relies on effect. You'd have to be stupid to pay 40-50 bucks for a harsh taste instead of 12 for the same alcohol content completely masked in thousands of different liquids, my favorite being a bloody mary mix.
>>
>>7471153
That's not the case for everyone.
Some people eat food for sustenance alone. Many people enjoy alcohol for taste as well as for effect.
You're either ignorant to that or being deliberately obtuse.
>>
>>7471171
Not really, but I suppose I can't wrap my mind around why someone would pay so much for something that will taste like shit regardless. Even if they taste "good" as well as alcohol can, that doesn't justify the price alone in my book.
