Why does /ck/ hate Tony?
>>
>>7425964
Because /ck/ is even edgier than he is
>>
Pompous, arrogant douche obsessed with being the quippiest and most passive aggressive in the room at all times. Like...chill the fuck out?
>>
>>7425964
He is a prick and bashes the usa and americans every chance he gets.
>>
>>7425964
I like Tony. I feel like he's mellowed out over the years. The biggest cringe I get now is him desperately trying to seem edgy and sharp like he was as a young man and frankly Tony your a grown ass old man with kids now cut that shit out.

Also lately his shows - particularly the CNN one Parts Unknown - is less about food and more about politics and shit. Which interests me less.

In all though I like him. He's a pinko turbo liberal but he's generally self aware about it and gives the other side a fair shake if they're on his show.
>>
>>7425964
No problem with Tony here. Good TV. He's got an awesome life. He goes out with cooks to good restaurants to eat and drink all day every day. Best buds with Eric Rippert. If you hate on Tony, it's either edginess or envy.
>>
He tells people about all these great hidden places to eat. Yet he hates all the Foodies that will then swarm it and ruin the place.
>>
>>7425978

You can blame the producers for Parts Unknown being more political.

If Tony had it his way you can bet it would still be more like his old shows what with the eating and getting drunk.
>>
>>7426066
>Getting paid to eat and get drunk
Living the life
>>
>>7425964
We hate him because he's getting to live the life we all wished we could live.
Traveling the world, going to distant lands, eating exotic foods, while consuming copious amounts of alcohol - all on someone else's dime.

We hate him because we love what he does.
>>
>>7425990
He doesn't really do that, though. Andrew Zimmern does that. He's way more animated and goes out of his way to make sure you know you need to check the place out. Tony will talk about the food he's eating, but it's an observation, not an advertisement most of the time. He only goes nuts about something if it's one of the best things he's ever had.
>>
>>7425964
>>7425967
>Pompous, arrogant douche

He reminds us of us.

He can't figure out if he wants to be the cynical old man who has seen everything or the young hipster who is "with it."

I like watching his shows because they don't just show the safe and sanitized versions of cultures. With that said I'm not so much into the political aspects, but I understand that the two often go hand-in-hand.

I'd like to read his books. Has anyone in here read them?
>>
>>7426657

I haven't read all of them, but I have read several.

IMHO Kitchen Confidential is a must read. The others aren't as good. If you like his writing you might enjoy them, but start with KC.

actually, Tony said the reason he moved to CNN is so he can be more political. the first Parts Unknown episode, Myanmar, was a place he'd wanted to go on No Reservations but the owners of the Travel Channel wouldn't help pay or some other insurance/liability shit. and it's not like No Reservations was apolitical (the Beirut episode instantly comes to mind, and there are quite a few others).

that said, i wish he had done more episodes of The Layover, which was actually quite useful for travelers and completely lacked any sort of political commentary.
>>

>>7426245

Young hipsters want to be the cynical old man who's seen everything without living the experiences necessary to reach that point.
>>
>>7428217
You ever read his letters to his friends and family? They're absolutely beautiful.
>>
>>7428216

Agreed, Layover was his best show imo but he barely did any of them before jumping ship to CNN. It was much more food based and a lot less BS and almost reminded me more of Bizarre Foods.

There are still some great episodes even on CNN. He just tries to get too "deep" at times and comes off as really stupid trying to come up with some grandiose idea about a location. He did the same shit on No Reservations though as well. I actually think No Reservations had the majority of his shitty episodes, especially earlier on. CNN I believe is giving him a better budget to work with also which helps.
>>
>>7425964

Everything he does is so obviously an act, not even playing a caricature of himself like Ramsey but a complete act.
>>
>>7428607

How so?
>>
>>7425964
he's kinda a cunt, but lets face it we still watch

>>7426225
yup we jelly
>>
I don't hate Tony. He's a useful guidepost for what the older hipster generation thinks about the world. I admire his efforts to reach the younger generation even as he effortlessly connects with the older one (Lebanon, Budapest, Morocco). I know and he knows he's not hip anymore but he hasn't reached that old man stage where he stops caring.
>>
>>7425964
>hating Tony Bourdain
He's bro-tier, I guess only people with friends can relate.
>>
>>7425964
He's a pretentious jackoff.
A pompous ass.
Also weed lmao XD
>>
>>7426105
basically this. this is the truth
>>
>>7428551
>>7428216
I like parts unknown the most honestly. The layover was not a very useful travel guide, the food suggestions are no different from his other shows and the hotel/transportation info seems like it is just tacked on for the sake of the theme with not much thought put into the hotels. I'm going to taiwan soon and the taipei episode was not much help with planning.

The cinematography in parts unknown is more creative and interesting than his previous shows (good example is the Thailand episode). The dialogue blows the layover out of the water. The sociological factor is what I actually like about the show. It will honestly be more beneficial when traveling than his "googled by an intern travel info" in the layover. The balance of social issues and food is just right imo, and is necessary in order to learn about these "parts unknown". I don't think any of the issues he portrayed as "deep" were over exaggerated. If anyone honestly gets offended by the "politics" it would be a bit ridiculous. People still expect "only food" from Bourdain and it's just not happening.

There's just no way you can explore only food in some of the war-torn and socially fucked areas he visits. On the other hand some episodes (quebec) are almost all about food, and for a good reason.

Elitism isn't the same as pretentiousness, imbecile.
>>
>>7426105
I don't hate Tony but this is the assumption I've always made about his haters. He truly has the greatest job on earth. If you like to eat and travel, I don't see how you could possibly not be envious. He is pompous douche, but to be fair, what celebrity chef/tv personality isn't?
>>
>>7426105
Not to mention he's like 6'3, has a full head of hair, and is pretty attractive.
>>
>>7428216
>>7428551

I thought The Layover was his worst tbqhfam. The show itself was fine, it wasn't much different from No Reservations, but the concept was awful. No normal, working human being is capable of turning a standard travel layover into what he was able to. It was just wildly unrealistic.
>>
>>7430458
Anyone got that dick pic of him in the pool?
>>
>>7429349
>Basically winter Bourdain is best Bourdain.
Oh oh oh.....don't forget that horrible winter Reykjavik Iceland Bourdain though. He was the opposite of happy camper, and I think the only person ever who actually hated Iceland.
>>
>>7430417
He isn't even an elitist.
He refuses to see culture where it exists and buys into the bullshit corporate wash of America version of culture.
He thinks street food is excellent so long as it isn't American street food. Actually, strike that, so long as he can pin a minority to it, he will give it a pass.
>>
/ck/ what do you wish tony did different?
is there anywhere he should have gone but didnt?
niggas he should've chilled with?
what if he was younger?
how would that change things?

>>
>>7425978
>Tony your a grown ass old man with kids
Nope, no kids, I think

>>7429259
>There's just no way you can explore only food in some of the war-torn and socially fucked areas he visits.
Why do we think he should limit himself to shows only about food, about food and food-centric? That's just not the only reason to travel, and "Real Travelers" never enjoy the wealthy budget to do all the food that there is, for that matter. He travels like a person would if they actually love culture and travel, as well as food with unlimited budget. He stays 4star, and rough and rustic. He dines 4star or street food or homemade or out of a market, out of a boat, with the hunter, anything at all. He uses SAT words to describe others, and he has self-reflective montages, too. The fact that it angers anyone is just that most people of average education simply don't talk like that and it rubs a person wrong when they feel they don't measure up (or can afford those things). He's not pompous, he's just educated and experienced. He admires all the great writers. It comes through in every episode, from Graham Greene to Hunter S Thompson, to Paul Bowles. IF there was an expat from another era writing in the presence of heydeys Morocco to Paris to Hong Kong, I'm sure, he's read it.
>>
>>7430558

And yeah that's pretty much a lot of what I was trying to explain. I don't think he should limit himself to just food in his shows.
>>
>>7430491
I kek'd hard during that episode, was he sick or did he just have huge hangovers all the time? Besides that, I can imagine constant darkness getting your mood down so I can't blame him for feeling like shit.
>>
I got tickets to see him talk on some tour or w/e, was the most boring shit ever, It was basically the cliff notes of Kitchen Confidential, Nasty Bits, Cooks tour and the sum of his shows and behind the scene work. I dont know what I expected, my dad got me the tickets cause we watched his Food network show together, than travel show together and him and my mom bought me the books too. Top tier comfy shit tho.

>Are you KIDDING ME?
>oh MAN you don't even KNOW
proceeds to lecture him on all the super expensive but good Sushi on the other part of town (confirming that guys argument really)

He could have just said

instead he acted just like >>7425967 said.

He's kind of a snob.
>>

not really though
>>
>>7437592

He looked at the guy and talked to him like he was a retard and he wanted to slap him. It was more of just a "oh you don't even know New York like I do" attitude.
