My favorites are mostly asian restaurants and are mostly north Austin
>asia cafe
>sichuan garden (round rock)
>sushi junai 2 (AYCE sushi)
The new north location is much better than the one on lavaca
>uchiko/uchi
>Ho Ho Chinese BBQ (pic related)
>Estancia Churrascuria (better than Fogo)
>Hoody's subs (round rock)

I got that nug

I went to Roaring Fork last week and had the burger on their happy hour menu and it might have been the best burger I've ever had. Can't speak for any of their food though
>>
Okay guys here are some good spots you may not have visited in South Austin

Evangeline Cafe on Brodie, best Cajun in town hands down

Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ, BBQ and Tacos, very very good brisket and smoked chicken and hands down best breakfast taco in the area
Potato, Egg and Cheese taco with Brisket for $3.50 and they're loaded up fucking full.

Independence Fine Foods on Manchaca - Some coffee, great deli selection and a good a la carte breakfast menu

Stouthaus Coffeepub in Sunset Valley (Next to where St. Philip used to be) - Coffee and beer. reasonable prices and awesome staff but no real food until Cane Rosso opens in April. Very good rotating tap list and the coffee is good and well priced (Not Houndstooth but better than Summermoon or Radio)

I'm a devout South Austinite and with the new Pinthouse and Tatsu-Ya on South Lamar I only go north of the river maybe once every 2 months.
>>

>>7414058

Holy shit that bbq looks good

I forgot to add to my list a really good Vietnamese place called Lulu B's on South Congress, like a block north of ben white.

Best Bahn Mi I've had in Austin. Don't be scared by the decor, they used to be a trailer and their brick-and-mortar is kinda shitty looking but it's killer food and a decent price for the location.
>>
Is it worth it to move to Austin?
I keep hearing good things about it and am thinking about moving somewhere really soon (need to get the fuck out of the midwest).
Is the rent cheap and is there a good job market?
Also to keep it food related I've never been to Austin but been through Texas and can confirm they have the best BBQ.
>>
>>7414807
No.

Stay out.

They've got enough hipsters already.
>>
>>7414807

To actually answer your questions

No, rent is fucking out of control and the job market is drying quickly. It's better to jump on one of the other cool cities that are due to "come up" I.e. Nashville, Little Rock, Baton Rouge.
>>
>>7414451
Austinite here.
Weed is everywhere. You must be like 12.
>>
>>7414807
It's not a terrible place to live, but the cost of living around here has been steadily rising over he last 15-20 years because of the shitloads of people flocking here from California and wherever else.

Only reason I'm still here is so I can sit on my house and let it keep going up in value because of all the growth so hopefully I can sell it off for a significant profit over what I paid for it.
>>
>>7414852
Majorly jealous, I grew up here but I'm too young to have bought a house so I'm getting pushed out and have nothing to show for it, I'm stuck in rental properties until I can leave this shithole
>>
>>7414870
I managed to luck out when I bought my house honestly. I got an inheritance when my grandmother died, bunch of stocks, bonds and mutual funds from my grandparents' portfolio that got split up among family members when she died.

I ended up cashing most of it out and paying for the house in full right before the market tanked in 2008. The stocks lost a fuckload of value but the house has done nothing but appreciate over the last 8 years.

I'm actually considering moving out and renting a room from a friend of mine at his house so I can rent this place and get some extra income from it for a while before I decide to sell it.

Fucking this. I always avoid downtown like the plague whenever SXSW or ACL is going on.

Actually, I avoid it like the plague even when they're not going on. Honestly, I hardly ever go south of parmer and mopac these days and I rarely even go that far south anymore.
>>
>>7413926
>where to go to avoid awful people during the fest?
basically the whole thing happens in about 3-4 square miles downtown. anywhere south of the river or north of campus will be the same as ever.
>>
>>7417603
I don't know what kind of experience you've had. I've been there about a dozen times and every time has been great.
The fried frog legs were good, the alligator bites are amazing, the alligator sauce piquant (what I'm assuming you're talking about) is actually quite good and my favorite thing I've gotten so far.
Maybe you went on some fucked up day?
>>
>>7414807
basically you missed the boat for it, and the job market was always overrated (hey you can make $250 a week at a call center or waiting tables, fucking paradise amirite?).

Yeah and the place looks like a health code violation waiting to happen. Went there once with a body and he got a wicked case of food poisoning. The only dish he had that I didn't was something with eggplant (I think? Now I'm not 100% sure it was eggplant.)

There's a decent place near Round Rock, Taste of Ethiopia. i dont remember what i had, but it was all pretty good.

I never figured ethopia would have their own kind of food. i thought they were all starving and eating dirt or something.

The Clay Pit makes an excellent chicken korma dish.
>>
>>7418964
If you're going to spend that kind of time pursuing BBQ might as well make the trip out to Lockhart and get the good stuff.

Added bonus, less pretentious hipsters and fat tourists.
>>
>>7413974
This except I just got through visiting.
Really, not great food at all. So many overhyped, mediocre locations. Also, the roads are shit and they cause bad traffic.
>>
>>7419869
This. And you don't even have to spend as much time getting to Lockhart as you do waiting in line at Franklin's. It's only like a 45 minute drive or so and you get much better BBQ.

>>
>>7418964
Yes, it's worth it.
>>7419869
>>7419883
Nothing against Lockhart, but Franklin's is worth the hype. The reason there's a wait is because he doesn't sacrifice quality for quantity. The wait isn't the torture most who complain about it think it is. They give you chairs and serve beer in line. I've smoked many briskets and a few for competition, and the quality that Franklin's gets is very difficult to do as consistently as he does it. He's also a very nice guy, not the hipster that his detractors claim. The guy grew up in Bryan.

Here's a link on how he trims briskets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaMgt1Altys

For those who don't want to sit through it all, basically he only serves his customers what judges are served in competition. A lot of the "lesser" parts of the brisket are trimmed off for sausage or beans.

Again I'm not taking away from places like Lockhart, it's easily 2nd best and worth a trip either way for the bbq history, but if you want your money's worth then Franklin's is just as good a stop.
>>
>>7420366
Salt Lick has been supplanted by the numerous better bbq joints in the area. It's the most expensive and isn't worth the money.
>>
>>7420821
You're entitled to your own opinion about Franklin's, but I certainly do not share that opinion.

I've been there four times and waited at least an hour, up to two hours each time I've been. And yes, while sitting around in line and drinking beer can be considered part of the overall experience, I'd just as soon go to a BBQ place with equally good food and no wait where I can drink a bunch of beer with my meal anyway instead of out on the street with all the other douchebags who seem to think standing in line is the best thing ever. Franklin's food is good, but I just don't think it's worth the wait.

Every time. Seriously often before I fall asleep I start searching my body and especially my ass for ingrown hairs and blackheads, scratching and pushing everywhere while my mind drifts off. It's some weird subconscious habit.
I often do it for like 10-15 minutes before realizing I've been doing it again.
