ITT: fake foods

Let's have a thread about fake foods or foods posing as something which they aren't.

Pic related, imitation crab. I never bothered to find out what it's actually made of but I assume it doesn't contain crab...
>>
Those are seafood sticks and they're made of Surimi, aka mixed seafood or white fish with MSG.

Nice shitpost.

Why would they even bother making these products? They taste nothing like the food they're supposed to imitate.
>>
>>7407017
Because people buy them.
>>
I love Krab as much as the next guy, but yeah... Never got the point of linking it to crab. Despite what they want you to think it is NOT an appropriate replacement for crab in recipes.

That being said, there are a lot of good recipes that use Krab, but they are balanced around it, not the real stuff.

So why bother with calling it Krab rather than tasty fish meal rolls or something a little less misleading? I would still buy and use them under a different name.
>>
>>7406937
Also known as "crab" sticks.
>>
>>7407042
They're called imitation crab sticks because they are trying to imitate crab meat. Are you retarded?
There is nothing misleading about it.
>>
>>7406888
It's made out of pollack or other white fish.
>>
>>7407017
you haven't even tried it though...
>>
>>7407017
Because as much as vegetarians and vegans bitch and moan about carnist cruelty and "healthy" diets, the vast majority of them eat like shit and still want their food to look/taste/feel like meat.

It"s a shame because there are some genuinely delicious vegetarian and vegan foods out there that don't require shitty fake cheese and textured soy imitation meat.
>>
>>7406888
it's made of fishmeal which is fish meat that has been proccessed to remove it's water and oil content to leave remaining a protein/fat paste.
>>
>>7407069
>There is nothing misleading about it.

It's misleading because they don't taste like crab nor do they have the same texture as crab.
>>
>>7407079
That's why it's an imitation and not the actual meat of a crab. It's not like the texture is wildly different either.
Take turkey bacon as a comparison. Does that have the same texture and taste as bacon? Not really, but they similar.
>>
>>7407076
Some of the vegan substitutes are pretty good in their own right (I like the mushroom burgers for example), it just helps vegans have some more substantial textures in their diet

Tempeh is also the shit

I don't really understand the vegan fish filet concept, but I've never tried them

Look up the Wartime episode of The Supersizers Go...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlzH7yP-bHs

It features a food critic and a comedian/broadcaster trying food made in similar ways to how the English would've eaten during WWII rationing. Includes stuff like using paraffin wax instead of butter, or using thing coats of brown gravy to give the illusion of wearing stockings when nylons were hard to find.

It's a pretty fun series overall. Especially the 80s episode.

>They taste nothing like the food they're supposed to imitate.

They actually taste just like (overcooked) shrimp, same texture too, especially the Sophies brand breaded shrimp. My girlfriend won't eat them because they taste too similar.

As for why? Most people become vegan for ethical reasons, not because they don't like the taste of meat/dairy/etc. Also, the longer you go without them, you start to forget the specifics of how they taste, so imitation products either begin to turn you off for reminding you of meat, or you can't remember how meat tasted to begin with so you don't know the difference. Also, some of them are tasty regardless (tempeh for example is delicious, and marinaded tempeh fried like "bacon" is awesome even though it's actually nothing like bacon).

I actually assumed they were a couple before I looked them up and realized he had a wife and she had a grillfriend. Circus peanuts are artificially banana flavored. They are like marshmallows, but denser. They will break when bitten, rather than pull and stretch, if you let them go stale first. It's a matter of taste whether that makes them better.

Why are vegans terrible at graphic design?
>>
>>7407017
Vegan hot dogs and sausages are pretty close, actually. Even the burgers are good, if completely unrelated in taste.

I assume these are used in shrimp recipes when they need a replacement with a similar texture but flavor isn't absolutely vital, like a garlic-heavy scampi rather than a cocktail.
>>
>>7406888
it's usually pollock. kemps artificial crab is great tasting and awesome for dieting. I can usually get them BOGO or 2 for $4. sticks are good for snacking, crumbles are good for wet salads or also snacking, flakes are good for cooking.

if you've never eaten then and don't want to freak yourself out, do not unravel the sticks. basically the ingredients are all pressed in a thin sheet and rolled. same with the other cuts, just segmented afterwards. I'd like to find a reason to use crab flavored sheets like that though

Sure GMO corn and soy are perfectly healthy. This has been proven time and time and again by "impartial" studies. What's probably not as healthy, is soaking the fields in round-up (a potent biotoxin) every couple of weeks. Which is something they only do with GMO crops.

Not to mention the same company pushing "roundup ready" crops also made Agent Orange, the Styrofoam that pollutes our oceans, and contributed to the development of the atomic bomb. But hey, if you want to eat something made by a company that specializes in killing people, go for it.

This. Vegetarian and vegan foods can be fucking good once they dissociate with trying to be the meatless counterpart to a meat dish and embrace the inherent qualities of the materials themselves... & I'm honestly surprised fake 'meat' is so popular with these crowds to begin with. If eating animals disgusts you, why do you want to imitate the taste & texture of something so off putting you change your diet/lifestyle around it?

It's not the taste/texture that's off-putting (at least not until you've been veg a while!). It's the inherent cruelty in animal by-products and flesh. People still like the flavors of these things, so the faux meats and cheeses help many transition. I do agree that vegan foods are best when not trying to imitate meat.
