What is the best gin and why is it Tanqueray? I started drinking this shit years ago because of the Ramones song. What's something else to buy? Preferably in a lower price range.
>>
I'd say gin is one of the more subjective liquors out there, especially now that there's 10x more with all the artisinal distillers offering it now.

I used to drink Bombay Sapphire a long time ago, but switched to vodka when I went full al/ck/.
>>
>>7395746
I buy a couple of handles of Tanqueray at Costco for $20. But I had the opposite trajectory--I used to drink nothing but Taaka and Barton's vodka. I kind of like the tonic mix with the gin. Makes me feel better somehow.
>>
>>7395756

I love a gin and tonic, I simply just drink too much to make more than one or two cocktails to start the night off with.

I've also noticed that gin is more likely to give me a headache/hangover.
>>
>>7395764
Yeah, my hangovers got worse with gin. I think vodka has fewer congealers or something. All those herbs and shit don't help gin.
>>
>>7395764
I do drink the gin with just some ice after a few tonic mixes. Tastes better than vodka on ice.
>>
OP, is that a gin+t? or is that a whole glass of gin?

i hope it's a full glass, gin nigga, probably the best spirits money can buy
>>
>>7395814
It's about 3/5 gin, rest tonic and limes.

dat price tag tho.

practice and an empty wallet can make you acclimate to drinking beefeater. I went back to tanqueray as soon as I got off unemployment tho. Tanqueray prices arent bad as long as you get the handles.

Never got that much into Tanqueray desu. For my everyday gin I always like to go for Bombay Sapphire, which costs about the same as Tanqueray. When i've got a bit more money to spend I'll go for Hendrick's

For a traditional juniper based gin the best I've ever had so far is

>>If I call Hendricks meme shit maybe I'll sound sophisticated
Well I am just fucking around but it also sort of is. Whenever any gin conversation comes up someone invariably brings up Hendricks. It's just not that good. It's alright, a bit harsh but nothing special and people who aren't really into gin seem to think it's like drinking Rolex's and diamonds.

It's widely available, mass produced and unexceptional except on a shelf with standard shit tier gins.

Thats strange, I find gin doesn't really give me a hangover at all. Bombay Sapphire especially.

Vodka however, that fucks me up.

What's the difference between gin styles? London Dry, Navy Strength, etc....
>>
>>7401631
I am OP, and I have no idea. Inquiring minds wish to know.
>>
>>7401559
cheap af and not so bad
>>
i was at the gin festival in docklands on friday, had about 7 gins, ama

we bought a bottle of rhubarb gin which was the fucking shiiiiiit

>>7401631

london dry gin is obviously unsweetened, the base alcohol has to come from fermentation of agricultural products and have a specific purity, and all the flavours have to be introduced during distillation, not after, in traditional stills.

navy strength is anything at or above 114 proof, because at that level it would ignite gunpowder and that's how it was tested for purity on deck.

most other 'styles' of gin are just terms which protect their origin, so plymouth gin has to come from plymouth, etc. there are of course many types of distillation. 'old tom' is pot distilled for instance, which produces more of a whiskyish taste. also, london gin can actually be produced anywhere (last i heard, anyway)
>>
>>7401563

That's Snoop Dogg, you dumb faggot.
>>
>>7403270
>and all the flavours have to be introduced during distillation

Don't you mean AFTER distillation? I was under the impression that London Gin was made by first distilling fermented grain to produce a neutral flavored alcohol which then had the botanicals introduced as a separate step, after the spirit was already distilled.

In fact I remember reading somewhere that the original distillation of the neutral spirit had to occur off the premises of the final infusion with botanicals.
>>
>>7403310

London Gin is made in a traditional still by re-distilling ethyl alcohol in the presence of all natural flavourings used.
a. The ethyl alcohol used to distil London Gin must be of a higher quality than the standard laid down for ethyl alcohol. The methanol level in the ethyl alcohol must not exceed a maximum of 5 grams per hectolitre of 100% vol. alcohol.
b. The flavourings used must all be approved natural flavourings and they must impart the flavour during the distillation process.
c. The use of artificial flavourings is not permitted.
d. The resultant distillate must have a minimum strength of 70% abv.
e. No flavourings can be added after distillation.
f. Further ethyl alcohol may be added after distillation provided it is of the same standard.
g. A small amount of sweetening may be added after distillation provided the sugars do not exceed 0.1 grams/litre of finished product (the sugar is not discernible and is added to some products purely for brand protection purposes).
h. The only other substance that may be added is water.
i. London Gin cannot be coloured.

It's like sapphire, just more so. Ojne of the general rules of a good Gin and Tonic is that you can buy good tonic, and cheap Gin, or good Gin and cheap tonic, and the net result will be good.

Buying good gin, and good tonic does't result in much of a gain in flavor, because they will mask each other. Good tonic is harder to find, and I usually have to mail order it, so with Canada Dry Tonic and Sapphire East I get a good flavorful drink for the same price as if I use basic Sapphire, and it's still relatively easy to get the ingredients.

A lime slice is the only other thing to worry about.
