Bought this in the supermarket, even though the packaging was kind of lame I thought it might be a slightly more interesting lager than regular stuff.

I'm dumb. I fell into their marketing trap, just because it mentioned the hops they use on the label and looks kind of 'kooky'.

Literally tastes like Appletiser. I don't know if they sell it outside the UK but don't buy it.

Pounding back a couple of these, so drinkable. Best APA from a norwegian brewery in my opinion.

Also polishing off one of the last bottles of my zombie dust homebrew clone. I've gotten kinda sick of singel hop citra after drinking it so much, almost too tropical, anybody else?

Bottling my Märzen tomorrow, can't wait to try it. Who /homebrew/ here?
>>
>>7390851
Love me a good porter! Especially next to a piece of chocolate cake, or with some blue cheese. But not my favorite style. My favorite beers are light to semi-dark and drinkable. Hoppy, malty w/e as long as they are refreshing and quenching!

That's a Swedish brand. They are known for providing 'some taste' for the same price as tasteless euro lager. But Kustom lager is their worst. Fat tire is better. It's a hoppy and drinkable beer for the price but not entirely without some weird off tastes either.
>>
>>7393431
Yeah, exactly. It was better than I expected and I really liked it. Tastes like an IPA but with tart fruitiness and a strange finish. It's kind of like a hoppy citrus flavor mixed with the actual strawberries used and makes an interesting combo. There is a little vanilla there too.

>Who /homebrew/ here?
Here! Gonna brew a clone of Pliny the Elder over the weekend. The green bowl in the background contains yeast slurry from the cream ale I bottled recently which I'll use for the DIPA.

Märzen sounds nice. What ABV are you targeting?
>>
>>7393680
What yeast are you using?
>>
>>7393689
Safale US-05. California ale yeast.
>>
>>7393694
Aha good fit for that beer! If you ever get the time to try it brew the Pliny with the Heady topper yeast! Just cut back some on the Pale ale malt and substitute with sugar and you will get a very nice version as well!
>>
>>7393680
OG was 1.054. Finished in at 1.014 so that brings me in at 5,3. Almost exactly at target, might have wished it finished a bit drier.
Never tried Pliny because I'm in norway, but been tempted to try to brew a clone because of the hype. How is it?
>>
>>7393699
Haven't had for almost a year. I tried it a couple of times when I was in San Francisco. It's a hugely hoppy, but quite drinkable ale. Tons of rather earthy hops aroma. I remember quite liking it.
One beer that's somewhat similar and slightly easier to find is Lagunitas Sucks. Still not available in Norway, though.
>>
>>7393720

Lagunitas Sucks is good but it's just an IPA. If it wasn't such a low price for such a high abv I would probably never buy it. I'm glad you compared it to Pliny because now I can stop giving a fuck about trying some over hyped IPA
>>
>>7393739
PtE is certainly overhyped, but it's still a solid beer.

Yeah that sounds just like Shilkmake but with rhubarb which probably makes it better. I have had a decent amount of Tired Hands beers but never tried Omnipollo before. The collaboration was similar to Tired Hands IPAs. They make some great beers with fruit adjuncts because the base beers are so good.

>>
>>7393946
Yeah I'm glad to have them nearby. I've been buying cans from their releases the last few weeks and they're real good but a bit expensive. I haven't tried the more hyped breweries like Trillium and Tree House but my understanding is that their beers are similar to Tired Hands. Really cloudy "juicy" IPAs.
>>
Just had a proprietors bourbon county on tap last weekend. Super maple-y

Good beer but the base bourbon county is way better
>>
>>7394052
They're definitely similar, but Tired Hands has a much larger variety compared to the other two.
Was never a fan of Tired Hands' darker beers and that's where Treehouse has them beat.
>>
>>7394310
Luckily they don't make many dark ones though. They have a ton of different names but it's mostly IPAs and saisons with different hop or fruit variations. I have cans of their imperial stout Only Void and they're good. It's pretty sweet and reminds me a lot of Imperial Biscotti Break.

I know, I know. I just really don't understand how anyone in this day and age can still delude themselves into thinking big name European pilsners (Or even better, one specific brand) are the beer for le classy gentleman.

And I really don't want to come across like too much of a pretentious ass while arguing with that idiot. I love "good" beer, but I drink my share of macrolagers as well. Even a fair amount of OE. I just really, really hate people who put on airs over which multinational pisswater they choose

You don't try to salvage your trolling attempt by changing tactics and accusing them of the exact opposite thing. They're easy to drink because the hops shine through at the end

That's exactly why they're not drinkable. You have to wait for that unpleasant hop aftertaste to dissipate before you can take another sip

eh, if its a shitty west coast IPA maybe
>>
>>7390127
>>7390080
It is.

Japanese beer is horrendous. It's the same thing as American Adjunct Lagers (budweiser, miller, pbr, etc) but with rice instead of corn. No flavor or aroma, cheap to produce, tastes like water went bad.
>>
>>7397930
No, they're lower in alphas, but that doesn't make them less abrasive because there aren't as many flavour compunds to balance the bitterness. None of the fruitiness of IPAs, just earthy spicy shitwater.

Pilsners are nasty and there's no reason anyone should choose to drink them. Deal with it.

5 Minutes is pretty good.

Last place I lived it would take close to 15 on the largest element of the gas stove.

Probably also has something to do with using a super cheap/thin dedicated brew pot that loses heat quickly.

well old timey people used to be racist as fuck, so modern liberals consider any old timey terms referring to race to be racist even though that is a ridiculous thing to believe

>>
>>7400311
It's about as offensive as saying "colored" when referring to black people, which is to say, not really offensive.

It's more the fact that it sounds incredibly archaic and usually the kind of person who says that kind of thing is an out of touch geezer who makes all his relatives cringe and everyone else in the room stare in amazement as he drops some hilariously racist or out of touch geezer bombs on everyone within earshot.

See also: saying "The Ukraine", saying "Byelo-russia", saying "Czechoslovakia", asking for green tea ice cream in a high end Japanese restaurant, referring to "the Ethiopian famine", putting ketchup on your steak, tipping less than 20% for good service, saying "the gays", and prefacing any sentence with "I'm not racist/sexist/homophobic, but _____"

And the one from the Russian River guys:

Columbus is used as bittering hops. You could use any high-alpha hops for that one without affecting the taste.

Got 25L of my first attempt at an Imperial stout in secondary right now.

OG went a bit shit, as I brew outside, and temperature dropped & I had to keep the lid on a bit - thus less boil-off than what I wanter. Still managed 1075 OG, down to 1012 after primary.

Mashed high, so hopefully it'll have a nice amount of body, aiming for 8.5% ABC now (should have been 10, but nevermind). Added 110g of cocoa nibs in the secondary - should make a nice beer by Christmas.

Now I think I'll go with a simple APA again, as an everyday beer.

P.S. Lervig's some good beer. Especially liked the hopped farmhouse thing.
>>
>>7401032
DOn't go for any of the international brands that advertise on TV.
There are probably 2 or 3 bigger local breweries tat you hear people near you talk about. Try and stick mostly to that and vary the styles, get a stout/porter, an IPA, a wheat beer, a lager, and something else that looks cool
