sichuan peppercorn isnt there to provide spice, they are weaker than black pepper. sichuan peppercorn has a numbing sensation and a lightly citrusy/black pepper flavor.

I am all for adding more peppers, ma po should be a spicy dish, but its not the same.

They don't taste alike. There are better peppercorns that I would consider more similar, but black pepper is certainly not one of them. They still taste nothing alike, I would say even less alike than red pepper and sichuan. At least with some hot red pepper, you will get some of the heat and a little bitterness when dried.
