This is a new anime about snacks.

Why aren't you watching Dagashi Kashi yet? It's very educational and provides a history lessons regarding Japan's most popular and iconic snacks.

inb4 /a/, nothing they discuss about this show has anything to do with food.

Well, Hotaru is rather... distracting. I want to try some Umaibo if I ever get the chance though (no homo).

I thought the umaibo episode was interesting, but I found it annoying that I had no idea what it tasted like or what the texture is like.

Is there any comparison in the west? It seems like it would be like a very very light, sugar-coated donut shaped like a long stick.

I actually bought umaibo because of that episode, I was so intrigued. I got the yakitori flavor, which is kinda sweet. The texture is like a Funyun (I'm just now realizing they're essentially the same thing). They're pretty fun.

I wish my local Japanese supermarket sold dagashi. Online prices are a bit much for what you're paying for.
>>
>>7372503
Oh I see, so they're a puffed flour snack. Very cool! I'm trying to imagine a yakitori funyun and it's pretty good.

The largest asian market near me doesn't carry umaibo, but no complaints from me because they often stock seasonal flavors of puccho.
>>
>>7372514
Is it only certain snacks that are considered "dagashi" in Japan? I thought the term applied to all small snack foods and candies, but it's a new word for me

Without looking it up online, I'd say it refers to inexpensive, often small snack foods that sometimes have a fun gimmick, like doubling as a whistle or a fake cigarette. The closest Western equivalent would be five-cent candy, but five-cent candy isn't really meant to be played with.

Yes, but unfortunately, being wrong has never stopped idiots.

I feel like I'm leaking IQ by participating in this conversation. Being anime, or Japanese by origin, doesn't make anything worthless by definition. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together could tell you this. But here we are, arguing about it as if a stray idiot frothing about "weebs" made a difference to this state of truth.
>>
>>7372775
Well, in this case, the emphasis is more on the composer being German and unrelated to Nazism, whereas Wagner was famously liked by Hitler so it doesn't emphasise the point as well.

Dessert Pocky isn't. Neither is Pretz for that matter.

Japan has tasty and not-tasty snacks same as every country. Take those pretzel-stick-cheese-dip snack packs for example. They're pretty fucking bland. Dots are really mild too. Doesn't mean all US snacks are bland.

Most of the really crazy snack food isn't imported to the US because there's a fear there would be no market for it. The blandest stuff is probably all you've been exposed to.

Learning about another culture isn't the same as buying it. You can read about it, watch videos about it, whatever you want, but you don't have to buy it.

Frankly I don't know why you would want to buy either. But I imagine that some people would be willing to pay more for the Japanese ones because they come in various flavors that don't exist in the US versions.

American KitKats have the least amount of variety and if you enjoy KitKats, it's enjoyable to try multiple types. That said, cheesecake KitKats are probably the only worthwhile Japanese ones to try. The British ones are much more enjoyable, e.g. mint, orange, cookies and cream, peanut butter, dark chocolate, etc.

I don't think taste or variation is why America is fat, and maybe Japan's candy is more varied precisely because it isn't fat.

Candy and fast food are a rare treat in Japan and treated accordingly. Americans are fat because they bulk eat it, so their candy and fast food work according to what I'll call the McDonalds formula: take low quality ingredients, pump them full of fat/sugar/salt/corn syrup to make them addictive and splash some tasty sauce on it for the illusion of a good flavor.

American candy is just a vessel of disposing of unreasonable quantities of high-fructose corn syrup that is grossly over-produced entirely on government subsidies, as cutting into the subsidies would drive away too many republican voters to be opposed. Hell, they're at a point where american candy is regularily used as pig feed substitute because it's cheaper.

Either Japanese shrines work differently than I thought or Japanese anime fans are creepy as fuck. Aren't shrines usually dedicated to the dead, great saints/heroes or certain abstract ideals?
