Anyone have stories about failed copies of different cuisines?

I remember a while ago, someone on /ck/ told a story about how they had a neighbor or a relative that was stationed in Korea a long time ago. To this day, they made kimchi and rice. But instead, they just steamed cabbage, put it over shitty rice, and ate it with jalapeƱos. Anything else like this?

Is it really failure if you don't put effort into it? I mean, that was never going to taste remotely like kimchi. A jar of sauerkraut would've been closer.

It's definitely a failure if you call it kimchi and rice.
