Buying, cellaring and maybe even drinking?

I enjoyed it last night. Very dry tasting but not particularly sour. It had a nice enough flavor to sip on for a few hours until I finished the bottle. It had the straw and "barnyard" flavors that are often described in brett beers and fruity flavors that didn't taste like a distinguishable actual fruit.

Tonight I'm opening a Lindeman's Gueuze Cuvee Rene. Never had a gueuze before so this will be a learning experience!

I'm drinking a North Coast Old Rasputin. Great standby, one of if not the best year round available stouts.

The other night I had a Tampa Brew Bus Hazelnut Spread Porter and a Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter. Both were great, MBCP obviously was going to be great it's the highest rated Porter in the world.

I've got a Stone black Enjoy by 2-14 chilling in the fridge I might bust out soon.
>>
>>7352057
I'm curious about that black IPA. Passed it up earlier tonight in favor or barrel aged stuff. The unfiltered IPA wasn't worth bomber price and unfortunately most stores didn't have the black one so I bought unfiltered first.

I finally drove the 25 minutes to the proper beer store in the city I moved to. The selection was awesome, more like where I moved from.

So, I finally got to try a few new beers:

1. Sierra Nevada Otra Vez. Awesome gose beer, seriously the tits.

2. Off Color Fierce. Pretty decent beer, not the best example of a berliner weiss I've ever had though. Still great.

3. Sierra Nevada Nooner Pils - fucking solid pils. I'll likely pick up a pack in cans next time. Never had, really happy I tried it.

4. Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock - it's been awhile, love this beer. Best doppel out there.

5. Off Color Troublsome - weird beer, more like a slightly salty berliner than a proper gose. Doubt I'd bother again, at the price. I think I've had it before, but it's been awhile and I forgot what it was like.

6. Weihenstephaner PIlsner - holy shit, even at 9 months old, this beer was amazing. That's a fucking amazing pilsner. Never had it before, and glad I tried it.

7. Weihenstephaner Hefe - my favorite beer, and until today, I had not had it fresh in a bottle in ages (6+ months). Never lets down when fresh.

8. Great Divide Colette - one of my wife and I's standard go to beers. We love it so much. Funny enough, Colette is what we were planning on naming our daughter when we have a girl in a few years. I've saved a few bottles to give her when she's older and tell her "oh, yeah sorry we named you after a beer" as a joke.

9. Paulaner Natural hefeweissbier - pretty solid hefe, darker than the Weihenstephaner hefe and more phenol kind of taste. Been years since I had it.

Wow. I could not handle this beer. It wasn't puckering sour but it's so fucking acidic. Made my lips burn and was pretty generally unpleasant. Just burped now an hour or two after drinking the gueuze and the taste totally came back up. Unpleasant, holy shit.

I went to a new store today too and picked up some beers that I couldn't find anywhere nearby.

Sierra Nevada / Boulevard Terra Incognita - A blend of ale aged in wine and bourbon barrels with a little bit of fresh ale. I hear it's like a quad and am a fan of both breweries.

Dogfish Head Raison D'Extra - Another DFH extreme beer to try. I like Fort a lot so this is worth a shot.

Allagash Farm to Face - Wild ale with peaches. I trust Allagash and want to check out their sours.

Heavy Seas 20 Year Storm - Bourbon barrel aged ESB. It sounds unique.

Went to these guys brewery last night and it rules. Old 8 is a crazy good porter, and they had a breakfast stout on tap that was on par with founders imo. This is also the first time I'm going to try kräusening. I've put aside about 1L of the wort and put it in the freezer. I'll add that back when I'm kräusening the fermented beer. Looking forward how that will turn out. It might actually turn out to actually be less messy than preparing a mini wort for priming.

I tried a few beers the other day:

Big Wave Golden Ale from Kona Brewing.
Not terrible but a tad too weak taste for my liking. But that's what I get for buying and trying American beers in Finland. I bet it's alright when fresh.

Herold Czech Black Lager. Quite strong taste of roasted malt for a lager. Not watery at all. Very good and quite cheap. Aftertaste didn't deliver though but I didn't complain.

Maredsous Tripel. The best of the bunch. Yellow sweet fruits and the usual yeasty triple experience. Recommended.
>>

Kona pretty mediocre desu. It's popularity boggles my mind. I never see anyone buying the stuff or drinking it

It's part of the CBA, the craft brew alliance - a group of breweries that teamed together, then sold half their company to Anheuser Busch. Widmer, Redhook, Kona, and their new faggot gluten free beer brand omission are all members.

Name an IPA with a better malt/hop balance, combined with the fact that they showcase both West Coast style and a more old world kind of IPA in the same beer.
Go ahead, I'll wait.
There's a reason almost every brewery looks to Sculpin as their definitive, "this is the kind of IPA we should make." It's consistent, has a great malt build, along with a balance of the fruity, citrus flavors that are usually found in West Coast hop bombs, but also brings forth the earthy and onion aromas of the old world hops and the types of IPAs that are more popular on the East Coast/abroad.

Delicious IPA is my favorite Stone IPA. And it isn't even gluten-free it is just lower gluten than normal beer. Not a fan of the "gluten is evil" meme either but I don't think that made the beer taste any worse. There are good reasons for some people to avoid gluten too. I know someone with celiacs and they'd be out of luck if it weren't for this fad.

I'm well aware that most people disagree with me on most beers. I don't ever buy stouts, RISs, IPAs, DIPAs, or sours. Pretty much means I'm at odds with most of BA 90% of the time. This isn't news to me, but guess what? BA isn't even close to representative of the normal craft beer drinker, only of the super enthusiasts.

Yeti is a breddy gud beer though. Did a 4 year? vertical of it recently. I preferred it to BCBS and a few others. Great Divide makes great stuff.

Pretty good beer. Hides the high ABV very well. Wasn't crazy about it, but was worth the buy.

>>7358324
Great Divide really does. I'm mostly into stouts, and Yeti is up there with my favorites. Their Claymore and Hercules are good beers too.

Everyone is going to have different opinions on beers to varying degrees. I don't think Ballast Point is top tier, but they put out decent beers.

More like a set standard that better breweries need to beat to be considered good.

I like their Grapefruit Sculpin. I think it's an okay gateway IPA for people getting into craft beer.

Widely available breweries like BP and Founders help people figure out what they like, and then start moving into more hardcore stuff and local breweries.
>>
>>7358391
I personally don't even think most local breweries are somehow better than some of the big boys. I've had too many shitty local breweries to believe that for one second.

If we're talking IPAs, I do think the general consensus that places like Troegs, Russian River, Firestone, Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, etc make the best IPAs would largely be true.

I have different thoughts about who makes the best German beers - now that's a situation where it entirely depends on where you are. The great lakes and the east coast have a ton of mid size places that makes good german brews. The rest of the country is fucked, so anywhere else you better stick with larger breweries. Another problems is freshness. Right now I'm in a shithole out in the very middle of flyover land, so I stick almost entirely with Sierra Nevada, Odell, great Divide, Boulevard, and a few imports that are popular like Ayinger and Weihenstephaner.

None of my local places are worth much of a crap. There is a place 2.5 hours away that was great.

Unfortunately not.

I was only in Santa Rosa for a couple hours and the wait to get seated was 4+ hours. Luckily there was hardly a line for their shop area.
>>
>>7358105
Pretty much any midwest ipa. I have only tried like, 4 beers in the ballast point line up, but none of them were remarkable except the grapefruit sculpin IMO. Never understood the hype of that brewery, but I suppose it's different trying the stuff fresh

Pilsners use 100% pilsner malt and noble or czech hops. Miller Lite uses corn, some rice, and basically no hops that are likely american.

No, that's what' its like fresh, too. Kona doesn't make bad beer, but they're pretty bland and a step above macro.

Live in Orlando. Can confirm.

I mean, I'm not hard up. I can get good beer, and there's a bar with great craft selection nearby.

But fucking Cigar City and Funky Buddha are in my back yard, and I can't get their shit easily. And having grown up in Washington, my standards are pretty warped.

Got a six pack of these for a Super Bowl party and have had a few since.

As expected, Cigar City has probably the best version in a style for my tastes. In this case, I'm calling that style, "drinkable light lager that kind of emulates lawnmower macro beer." Even though it's a helles rather than a pilsner.

Also as expected, it's still just not really my taste. I will probably never buy this again ever in my life. It's objectively well made, but subjectively only slightly better than unpleasant.

That said, it's kind of cool not entirely hating a beer that feels like something my dad and grandpa would have been drinking when I was a kid. I can definitely pound it, and it even looks super trashy. Also, went really well with wings.

Yeah it is. up in Franklin mills. Agree prices on some stuff aren't the greatest but great selection. Kinda like Churchville inn a bit pricey but oh well. What your usual bar?

Cheers, that's the one. I don't have a usual bar but I've been there just shopping for bottles and recognize the bar.

The store has an amazing selection but it's a shame that all the bottles cost at least a few dollars more than other stores.

Yes I did, and I didn't buy any. I have heard of Forest and Main and really want to go there but I haven't yet. Their beer sounds pretty unique. I'm going to try to get cans from Tired Hands this Thursday if they don't sell out too fast. They're another nearby hipster-filled brewery with great beers.

That probably means you drank it too cold. La Trappe quad remains strong at lower temperature, while Rochefort loses its subtle notes.

>>
>>7363714
>>7364707
>>7364782
Part of me disagrees.
Lindeman's is pretty shit tier. Artificially sweetened for shelf stability.
But if you don't like tart sour taste (smarties, sour patch kids, other candies that have a lot of citric acid) then give up. More for me, I guess.
>>7364782
Ouch! That stuff is SWEEEEEEET.
Got my own question here:
I want to cellar some beers, but I'm lacking a cellar.
Logic tells me that I can just store them at room temp (~65F) for the colder months, and then refrigerate (<40F) during the warmer months (ambient reaches up to 85F). Sound like a sound idea?
>>
>>7364832
Beer responds very badly to temperature changes, so that would probably have a worse effect than just storing at any constant temperature. I'd say, store them closest to drinking temperature.
>>

Do all those have the same "vomit" character? I was disappointed that I didn't like the gueuze since it is well regarded but it tasted like burping after throwing up. Kriek didn't have that taste and was really good.

Hnng.. I'm craving this so hard.

I'm actually planning to brew a clone of this right now. There's an "official" homebrew recipe by the Russian River brewers here: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/attachments/0000/6351/doubleIPA.pdf

But the numbers somehow don't seem to match up. They would need a super effective mash to get to the OG they stated. Welp maybe they do. I'm kind of trying to match their results with malt extract and a partial boil, but that of course screws up the the hop efficiency.
