Saute with minced shallots and garlic.
Guaranteed success?
1) Break stems at natural breaking point in the lower half. Gets rid of the stringy bit below. Don't worry it'll break at the right point itself.
2) Get aluminum foil ready, put 5 Asparagus on each. Sugar, butter, salt on top. Be liberal with the butter and user little of the other. Fold neatly.
3) 45 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius in the oven.
Oh, and with the discarded stems you obviously make soup...
