soda is fine in moderation, the problem is people can't moderate themselves. a 6 oz soda used to be the normal portion size, with a 12 oz soda being large. now you can get 2 liters for 1 dollar, and some people drink straight from the 2 liter bottle.

I drink it for two reasons.
1. Caffeine: this is assuming, I have no access to coffee or tea.

During the summer I'll run to the corner store and get a bottle coke, dp or 7 up when I'm doing yardwork on Sundays. Occasionally whiskey coke if im bar hopping. Beyond that it's all water, tea, sparkling water and booze. Manchild reporting in.

Not to the extent that it overrides the water content. The dehydrating effect of soda is greatly exaggerated.
