Cool. I haven't seen the barrel aged stout but I'd buy that for sure if I found it.

My experience with "sours" is really limited. I've had Weyerbacher Tarte Nouveau and some goses but I don't think that those are sour compared to the other stuff out there. I'm just dipping my toe into the sour pool.

Decided to spend by day off by comparing a stout and porter from the same brewer. Went with Bell's, since I've heard so much about Kalamazoo Stout.

The comparison was actually really interesting. I started with the porter, and it definitely had some malty roast flavors, but was just lacking a lot. A little too thin, a little too flat, not a lot of depth of flavor, just a touch too far on the bitter side.

The stout, I swear to god, is the same beer, just with everything done right. The balance is perfect; it's just a little sweeter, but not too sweet. The bitterness is perfect. The malt notes feel the same, just amplified. The mouth feel is much sturdier, and any sense of wateriness is gone. I mean, just look at the difference in heads. These beers were poured exactly the same way.

If I blind tested these, I would think they're the same beer, just something had gone wrong with one of the batches.

Side note, the licorice aroma is overpowering when first pouring the stout, but goes away pretty quickly, and there is no licorice flavor up front at all.
>>
>>7324482
Something about Unibroue bottling just doesn't look appealing to me. Which is obviously unimportant, and I like their beers just fine. Just something about the way they're packaged and labeled makes my mind think I don't want to drink it.

I wish I could put my finger on it.

>>
>>7324943
Yeah the halloween edginess is offputting to me. That doesn't stop me from enjoying their beer though.

>>7324933
Comparing these is a good idea. The difference between a porter and a stout seems so subjective and the line between them is blurred at best in my own mind.

Bell's is one of my favorite breweries for porters/stouts. Try Expedition if you haven't had it yet. It's a Russian imperial stout and is much stronger tasting that Kalamazoo and is the best RIS I've tasted.
>>
>>7324968
You hate barrel aged beers in general or you hate people buying barrel aged beers and aging them even more in the bottle?

Yeah it's the clearest example. They label it an "imperial porter" which might be the stupidest beer classification I've ever heard of. A stout is an imperial porter, there is no reason to try to describe it this way.
>>
I had a bottle of Briney Melon Gose tonight and it was very good. This is my second gose after Sierra Nevada Otra Vez and it's definitely saltier with a stronger fruit flavor. I liked it a lot and will probably buy more of them once it is released in 6-packs of cans.

Overall though I might prefer Otra Vez because the salt was so strong in Briney Melon. A little bit of salt makes drinks more refreshing but this crossed the line into a salty drying sensation. Maybe it's placebo but I feel more thirsty now after drinking it.

>>
>>7327966
They're almost all American beers because Ameriburger beer drinkers are easy to please.
Europeans have had good beer for centuries whereas Americans are like "oh wow, this pine piss is delicious. so much better than Coors Lite! 5/5"
>>
>>7324206
Some are slightly citrusy. Even the German ones. I had Kaiserdom Hefe-Weisse that has some subtle orientation towards it and I liked it.

That's wrong, frankly. Have a quick read of one of the British bloggers that actually do primary research, try a search for stout porter differences or similar search terms on Shut Up About Barclay Perkins.
>>
>>7328043
Or its because we have a more breweries than any other country so there's more of a chance for the US to take over most of the list. Just a thought.
>>
>>7328126
Or because Ratebeer is dominated by a largely US userbase, and as an aside, a largely entry level one at that it seems.

The guy you are replying to is still a spaz though.
>>
>>7328043
Americans still haven't really come to grips with the idea that beer comes in different styles. Hence why every conversation about beer is really an unspoken conversation about no more bud light. It's like how you cannot have a meaningful conversation about politics with an Israeli, to them everything is about their persecution complex and anyone who disagrees with them is either a nazi or an islamist. Even when there's no nazi or islamist in sight, still, everything is evaluated in terms of nazis and islamists, and the only way Americans can think about beer is in terms of how it compares to bud light.

I don't think America will be capable of having a reasonable relationship with beer for another couple of centuries.

True, Iraq War 2 finally pushed you past Europe for number of wars started by an out-of-touch aristocracy for personal reasons and to the detriment of the nation as a whole.
As for beer, you're only ahead if you're exclusively measuring the quality of your beer in terms of IBUs or kilograms of hops per litre of wort. Then again, given your crippling autism I imagine you're only comfortable measuring things in numerical terms like that rather than anything so intangible as taste.

"session" just means low alcohol and that's fine. Not every beer needs to be extremely high abv and you don't need to get drunk every time you drink. Low abv stuff is good for lunch and taste different. Different styles can both be good.

I think it might be an "experimental ipa". Lots of breweries have been releasing those every once and a while. It means that they are using some new breed of hops that doesn't have a name yet. They're unpredictable tasting since they can't just tell you "this has cascade hops, it is dry" or "this has citra hops, it is citrus-y". The recent Victory Experimental IPA was good stuff. I think it used Pilsner malts so it's very light-colored and has an aftertaste that I'd associate with a lager instead of an IPA. I've had some other "experimental" IPA's that were much less successful though. They're a gamble but can be interesting.

I'll second this. I live on the east coast but Firestone Walker makes amazing beer so I expect it would be a nice place to drink.

If you go out on your 21st then drink whatever people offer you. If you're buying something for yourself I'd say you're probably best off buying some kind of mixed pack and getting to try a few different things. Blue Moon is a wheat beer, sometimes called a "wit", and if you enjoyed that you could go to a beer store near you and pick up some others in the same category.

I love that. Anything specific from Unibroue you recommend? I've only had La Fin Du Monde and am looking for what to try next. I like how relatively low their prices are too. What kind of flavor do you like? Because you're probably looking for the mouthfeel of nitro beer, which I'm a big fan of.

Left Hand is the best purveyor. They've got a milk stout, a russian imperial, and a (very well balanced) amber on nitro. They're all really good, though I haven't had the amber on nitro. They also just started bottling a coffee stout I want to try.

I know Oskar Blues also bottles nitro, but I've never seen or had it.
>>

I don't think many of the beers that are considered the best are particularly obscure.

There are certainly great obscure beers, but the stuff that gets the most praise in craft circles is also well known, and often relatively easy to find.

Nah, no pizza. I don't like ultra bitter IPAs, if that's what you mean. My favorite IPA is Jai Alai which is extremely fruity. I'm also not the biggest fan of stouts, but I love pepper in chocolate, so Xocoveza sounds good.
