Didn't see a whiskey thread so I'm making one. Tell us what you're drinking, recent purchases and opinions and recommendations.

Anyway, just got pic related at the store today, anyone tried it and what did you think?

Big fan of CC, but apparently there's a TV show where the main guy drinks it a lot and now any time someone sees me drink it they say I'm only drinking it because of him.
So that's retarded but CC is still great.

Just looked it up, it's called Mad Men

Balvenie is pretty good but the prices on that shit have seemed to explode in the past year. I remember being able to get it for under $40, now I never see it below like $55-60.

I got the yearly CS edition of Lagavulin 12 for Christmas, and while I haven't had the nerve to actually start drinking it, I had a sample at the shop which was great. Being 12 rather than 16 the smoke is thicker, but in a rich and interesting way, and overall there's a very strong fruity element which is both citrusy and berry-y. And barely any spirity-ness despite being only 12 YO and likr 57%.. I ended up with this over a Kilchoman that I was leaning towards because, while the sample of the Kilchoman Machir Bay that was available was definitely good, it basically tasted to me like something between an Ardbeg and a Laphroaig without anything really new jumping out. Since that bottling is like 4-6 years old, it's definitely an accomplishment that it's basically as good as any 10 year old Islay, but not unique enough in of itself to make me want an entire bottle. I'll be curious to see how it ends up at 10 years.

This picture really fucking triggers me.

Why are you pouring that into a plastic cup?
>>
>>7301883
It's styrofoam and it's cheap whiskey. I was about to grill for 45 minutes and i didn't want to be stepping away from the grill for a refill every 10 minutes.

>this picture really fucking triggers me

From left to right
>WT101
excellent afordable high proof and a no brainer when at bars with shit selections
>eagle rare 10
nice and dry, well wooded and usually hated by newbies, always have a bottle at home
>jim beam bonded
garbage, tastes like old bread
>jim beam white
ok for mixing with coke for guests i dont like
>woodford reserve
love hate, overpriced but on the odd ccasion it hits the spot, an occassional pour
>knob creek rye
nothing special, a little too simple, ok for cocktails
>knob creek reserve
killer whiskey
>makers mark cask strength
Pretty damn good, really suprised me considering how much i hate...
>makers mark
over priced, over hyped wheater than pussies and non whiskey drinkers love because its so "smooth"

Overall good spread, needs a bit from the four roses and heaven hill lineups for balance

Got this the other day and im loving the shit out of it

Recently drank a bottle of double oak woodford, normal woodford reserve is my cheap go to and i like the double oak too, its not as nice as the Four Roses SB though. This year has been a bourbon year for me so far, havent been fancying scotch.

Funnily enough i got a jim beam 12 year signature craft on new years eve and it was really good too, well surprised

Saw a botyle called Bakers 7 or something the other day but i balked at the 60+ pound asking price, anyone tried it?

better buy it the way it was while you can, they're changing to NAS and all the 12yr stuff is gone. My local liquor store is half nas half 12yr on the shelf atm

Insider here on scotch

Stock up!!! Barrels are getting reeaaal thin for scotch. You will start seeing more blended scotches hitting the market, and single casks going up in price or vanishing all together. It's happening already, but in the next 15 or so years shit will get bad

I am really surprised that distilleries are ramping up production instead of not ramping up production.

By ramping up, they will end up using up more oak and peat, which will cause the decline of the industry in the near future simply because there will be even less product and/or the decline in quality will be very pronounced in the future bottles.

By keeping things running the way they are ran now, they can increase the price points per product, which would hike up their profits instead. The rarity of bottles would also create a secondary trading market that creates further value.

Who the fuck is running the corporate side of these distilleries?

I am not going to post a picture, but as far as whiskey goes I have got some Ardbeg Uigeadail, Glenlivet Nadurra 16, and High West Double Rye.

The Uigeadail is my favorite. At first I wasn't sure what I thought because of how sweet it was, but I have grown to love the sweet and peat combination. The Nadurra is pretty good too, but it is very odd how rather than having an apple taste like standard glenlivet I get a very powerful banana flavor, along with some peaches and tropical fruit.

The Double Rye is alright, but not as unique as I was expecting. I certainly get some dill, mint, or eucalyptus flavors, but underneath that is some standard oaky, bourbon flavors. It goes down smooth though, probably going to make it my getting drunk whiskey.

>>7305274
I have been interested in Edradour for a while ow myself, how would you describe it?
>>
In Australia, BWS has a decent deal on Glenlivet Founder's Reserve right now. Better than Dan Murphy's price. It's a little sweeter than I prefer, but not too bad.

For any Australian wanting to belatedly celebrate Burns Night rather than the Howardesque racism that Australia Day has become, it would be a decent choice.

got these ones right now

The Glenrothes is shit, no character, typical basic flavourless Speysider, it was a gift though so I'm not complaining. Bunnahabhain 12 & Ardbeg 10 are as good as ever, solid, tasty stuff. The Benromach 2006 Peat Smoke is one I discovered last week and it's great, strongly recommend you get one if you like your peated whisky.

I love Tullamore. For ~$13 here it's a steal.

Their standard bottling, the ten year old is a heavy sherry whisky, I haven't tasted too much but I'd say it's very similar in style to Aberlour, with a really nice malty biscuit character.

What are some good whiskeys to drink for a new whiskey drinker? I have some experience with ryes but not bourbons or scotch. What bottle should I buy? Price isn't a big issue if it is a renowned one.
>>
>>7308969
For Scotch start with something basic like Glenmorangie or Glenfiddich then try the more strongly flavored Laphroaig or Lavagulin then try something more delicate like Glenkinchie. Write some tasting notes for each one to help yourself think a little more about the flavors, even if what you write is all bullshit. Tasting notes usually are.

Not all in one sitting, obviously. When you're sampling a range in one sitting, you start with the delicate flavors and move on to the stronger ones.

I've dabbled in bourbons but know little about them so won't comment there.
>>
>>7308999
Thanks. I believe that the store near me has a good selection but when I looked today I was overwhelmed and couldn't choose. I will buy one of these and try it out.
