Bought a semi nice toaster at the thrift store for dirt cheap. Works great, but holy fuck does the thing reek of thrift store when its turned on. How does one clean a toaster?

No shit. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the smell is coming from the inside, and not the outside or the crumbs.

Plug it in and take it into the bath with you

I have roasted bread almost daily daily.

Ah. Good thinking.

I also have a thrift store toaster. Mine is seriously vintange, with mica plates inside it, and bakelite knobs and everything. I actually had to replace the cord because it still had it's original asbestos-wrapped cord on it.

ANYWAY. Are you handy with tools? Because the best way to clean it is to unscrew the cover, take it off, and go at the insides with some cotton swabs and either rubbing alcohol or vinegar and water. (obviously, with it UNPLUGGED, but hopefully you already knew that). Make sure it's dry, and plug it in, without any bread in it, and run the toaster over and over until you're sure there's no smell.
If there's STILL smell after that, then you just bought a stinky toaster, friend.
Really, most electric appliances and electronics can be fixed just by taking them apart, cleaning them, and putting them back together. Unless there's a specific thing broken, of course.
