What brand of knife block would you recommend for an amateur chef who's learning to cook?
My budget would be about £80/$110/€100.

I assume by "knife block" you are referring to a set of knives rather than the actual wooden block alone?
Best advice: don't get a set. You end up paying more money for knives that you won't end up using. What should you get? IMHO:
1) A chef's knife as large as you can comfortably handle. This will do 95% of your cutting tasks.
2) An inexpensive serrated knife for bread.
3) An inexpensive paring knife for the little fiddly stuff.
4) A means of sharpening your new knives.
