I personally prefer kefit, but when it's not available I go for buttermilk instead. They're kind of similar. So maybe give buttermilk a shot if you don't like kefir.

Shouldn't have any chunks, maybe yours was off. It should be smooth and about the texture of buttermilk, with a flavor very much like plain yogurt. It's great for your digestive flora, and the tang it's got is really nice to work into dishes.
