Why has /ck/ gone to rat shit recently?
Shit posting is rife, full of weaboo animu faggots and it appears Youtube idiots are using it to shill their crappy shows 24/7.
Remember when we used to swap recipes, gave cooking advice and posted OC?
How can this be fixed?
>>
>>7263982
I miss a lot of the posters from a few years back. I miss watching food show feeds all day with fellow cu/ck/s. I miss our cookbook a day advent calendar. I miss people asking a question and getting a dozen serious answers.

I even miss our tripfags.
>>
>>7263982
All the vegans/vegetarians took over
>>
>>7263982
>Remember when we used to swap recipes, gave cooking advice and posted OC?
Not so much. I've been here five years, and I remember pics of meals from shitty truckstops, quinky sauce, Chipotle shilling, arguments about whether bacon and Sriracha are memefoods and Anons calling anyone who drinks wine or doesn't like Kraft Dinner pretentious.

And endless discussions about fast food.
>>
>>7263990
We had vegetarians before. They aren't the problem. The problem is that the people who actually created and contributed to high quality threads have moved on. We have always had shit threads. It's just now there is very little to offset them.
>>
Unless janitors get way more manpower, all you can do is ignore shitposting and try to continue posting content. It's not like /ck/ moves fast enough that individual threads are killed by the initial flood of epic meme posts, it's more a matter of keeping legit threads bumped.
>>
>>7263995

>moved on

Moved on to where, or just had babies and don't have time to surf 4chan?

>just discovered CSAs
>about to subscribe but am a limited cook
>looking for help

I'm sorry about /ck/'s downfall. I'm a refu/g/ee and trust me it's gone the way of the shill as well. At least /sqt/ is still alive.
>>
>>7263995
Pretty much this. Quality of posts has diminished significantly, posters who used to generate decent quality OC have all disappeared or stopped posting.

I used to post OC but I got tired of all the garbage food scarfing autistic man-children who tend to shit up every thread that isn't about fast food, pizza, ramen and hot pockets.
>>
Get some janitors that do their job? Problem is, no one would be on /ck/ if that happened.
>>
>>7263992

So when you say you've been here 5 years you really meant 1 year?
>>
>>7264003
food and cooking needs to be split so that the cooks have their place and the (fast-)foodies have their own area.
>>
We shouldn't have to see jack's ugly face and disgusting food every time we open up the first page of /ck/, and the mods aren't doing anything about it.

It attracts /b/ tier posters to the board.
>>
>>7264001
I haven't really hunted them down. I wandered off for a bit when life got complex, and they were just gone. I know all the homegrowmen have moved to /out/ but they only accounted for some of the good posts. I think homebrewmen went to /diy/. But again, haven't really looked. I suppose I should just go looking for a new cooking community, but I've always had a soft spot for 4channers who want to learn to cook, so I stick around to offer advice.

They will never split a board that moves this slow. Which means those of us that care enough about a quality community might have to move somewhere else. Probably a forum or something.
>>
>>7264009
It won't help. All the fast food people will still invade the Cooking board to ask the same retarded questions about how to improve instant ramen and frozen pizzas and how to cook chicken breasts and how to make food when you have no money, etc.
>>
Blame the Muslim shit posters who suddenly have regular Internet usage
>>
>>7264018

The entire site has gotten faster since gamergate and the fappening.

>go to sleep during 'straya posting hours
>wake up to "cut it with bread crumbs, haha, dank meme!" in every thread
>>
>>7264030
Nah, too easily exploitable.

What we need is a more active mod or janitors to prune all the unrelated garbage posts/threads and obvious shitposting.
>>
>>7264030
I would agree with that. You'd need a few mods, but a check on their power. maybe a reporting system. If a mod starts just going nuts deleting posts that are relevant, or gets a bug up their ass about a certain poster who is actually posting relevant threads.

Not something I'd be looking to do, but you need to preserve some of the laid back and fun aspects of the community, without letting it be so open that we would see 5 "rate my steak - shoeleatherandketchup.jpg" posts a day.

Pure cancer.
>>
>>7264277

This >>7264055 was from a jack thread.

About a dozen other people told the OP to stop spamming jack or otherwise just fuck off, and they were all deleted and presumably banned.

So much for self-moderation.
>>
>>7264309
has jack (never warched a video as I can judge by the thumbnail that his content is of 0 interest to me) affiliated with 4chan?
>>
>>7264318

It's possible, but the people starting jack threads and bumping them in order to keep them on the first page are the same people from joey threads (which are now deleted).

It's basically just a general/after-school circlejerk, more about the e-celeb than about food or cooking.
>>
>>7264328
That's why I hide every jack thread I see and move on to other threads that interest me.
>>
>>7264338

As long as you report them first.
>>
There is no fix.

There was a time where people still populated other boards, leaving boards like /ck/ /out/ and so to be less populated. Now that 4chan has died and invaded by Europe and Australia, every board has been destroyed in search of epic memes.

Reddit mostly, same as damn near every other board on 4chan. We're basically a 3rd world country- everyone who isn't useless emigrates to greener pastures. Sure /r/food has been shit for awhile now, but the other food and cooking communities tend to be great. You can ask a question without it being flooded with shitposting and dank memes. There's worthwhile discussion and people actually know what they're talking about. More importantly, the people who don't know what they're talking about don't go around pretending to be experts- anyone who claims anonymity eliminates ego is full of shit.
It's just better.

>>
>>7264482
There's a sub for everything. Just pick whatever aspects of food and cooking interest you the most. Generally the more specific or niche, the better. The Reddit format sort of falls apart if the focus gets too broad (most of the complaints about Reddit are about the larger communities, especially the default subs which are basically the site's equivalent of containment). For example /r/alcohol is utter shit and /r/liquor is only marginally better, but /r/scotch, /r/bourbon, and /r/cocktails are fantastic. Off the top of my head? /r/askculinary, /r/sousvide, /r/charcuterie, /r/pressurecooking, most of the baking subs (/r/breadit, /r/sourdough, etc.), /r/spicy. /r/eatsandwiches is mostly food porn, but it's good food porn. /r/pizza has a lot of food porn as well, but they're still great for questions and troubleshooting. Shittyfoodporn is a lot of fun.
Like I said, just pick a topic and see what you find.
>>
>>7264530
Oh ya, and /r/coffee. The community is full of hipster garbage but it's still really useful resource.

Well OP I've tried to make actual threads before where I cook something and try to get a discussion started, they always get lukewarm responses like 15-20 guys, then it gets deleted. Meanwhile cringe threads and jack threads get hundreds.
>>
>>7264548
Just more proof that probably 90% of the people who browse and reply on this board are all more interested in /b/ tier shitposting and trolling than they are in actual food and cooking.
>>
>>7264548
The /ck/ challenge is back soon. it's always worth reading. But most of the good content just ends up on the blog for it. I hope more people do instructionals this year.
>>
>>7264585
Hopefully.
I never though I'd say it but I'm browsing reddit and there's some good stuff on there.
Just avoid the SJW subs and there's some quality advice.
>>
>>7264606
That's the great thing about Reddit- you have options. Sure, some of the subs are filled with SJWs or wannabe /pol/, but most of them aren't. And some are run by dictators and some don't have a single mod who gives a shit, but again, there are plenty of others that are very well run. You're not really forced to put up with anything you don't want to. That comes with its own set of dangers- plenty of people decide they don't want to have to put up with anyone disagreeing with them about anything- but overall it's better than having to put up with awful communities and rampant shitposting because you don't have any other choice.
>>

OC is still there, but it's harder to find under the pile of shit post threads. We really need more active moderation on this board. Can't say we're ever going to get it, but that's the only way I can think of fixing this board. That, or a lot more OC to overwhelm the amount of shit posting were getting now.
>>
>>7264548
Remember where you are. While the days of /b/ being the asshole of the internet are over a decade behind us 4chan is still a fringe place by modern standards. The history, anonymity and legacy imageboard structure make it different from most of the other experiences offered on the internet today.

I expect bullshit, trolling and the celebration of stupid, lowest common denominator shit along with the occasional brilliant bit of OC and actually helpful responses. Because I know where I am, and I'm here as much to be entertained as I am for SRS BSNS cooking discussion.

I appreciate those who post here in earnest, and I'm often among them, but if that's all this place was I'd never come here.

There's still a few guys posting quality.
Borneo does sometimes as well as the anons.
That Mora dude as well, even though he's a neanderthal and probably more suited to /out/.
>>
Maybe we can designate one or two days a month with a ton of OC? I know other boards designate certain General threads for weekends only because it takes time to generate OC.
>>
>>7264688
I like neanderthals. He tends to do shit closer to my own cooking. I mean, sure, I like to see someone make something nice and light. I might even try it in the summer. But I'm a meat and potatoes guy. It's why I dry hump my pressure cooker every time I walk past it.
>>
>>7264664

The board's gotten so fast that you really need to start with an image of the finished product if you post an OC/cookalong thread (which kind of defeats the purpose of a cookalong), and just ask, "what do you think of my [whatever], /ck/?", and then bump your thread with the actual cooking part if you don't want it to get buried.

>>
>>7264697

Or just take a few pictures whenever you cook something you think is worth sharing and start a thread.

If newcomers stopped by and saw nothing but boring cooking threads instead of epic memes they'd be more likely to move on.
>>
>>7264678
That shit is interesting to me. I live in a sheltered world where I get my groceries from the CSA, farmers' markets and ethnic groceries most of the time. I cook at home most of the time, but when I eat out it's at nice places or hole in the wall immigrant dives.

To me the whole world of people shopping at Walmart or Costco and going out to chain restaurants and fast food joints is like a parallel universe that I know exists but I do not inhabit. I don't know anyone who actually likes ranch dressing or frozen pizza, so coming here fulfills a morbid curiosity about such things.
>>
>>7264664
>That, or a lot more OC to overwhelm the amount of shit posting were getting now.
But that's the problem: OC will always take more time and effort than shitposting. You can't recycle quality content and have it stay quality content, whereas the same shitpost (even with literally the same text and image!) can be recycled over and over again. On top of that, a pointless argument will always generate more activity than meaningful discussion, and because of the imageboard format that means it will always be more visible. Without active moderation, we cannot win.

There's nothing wrong with occasionally laughing at a shitty cook on youtube (I get drunk and come here to yell at bad cooks just as often as I offer real advice and be generally helpful, often in the same thread).

The problem with jack (and most cringe threads), is that they're nothing but a few people dumping reposted crap nonstop. and not actually discussing anything. They're like ylyl threads, or generals, where everyone participating somehow thinks that endlessly reposting the same shit is funny or interesting.

>>
>>7264746
True. What truly fascinates me are the people who like truly awful shit, then act all shocked when others point out that it's awful. I'm sure some of them are trolls, but all of them can't be. I've been called a pretentious cunt for saying ranch dressing and BBQ sauce used as condiments are unlikely to improve any food that wasn't crap to begin with. That's hilarious to me, because irl I don't know anyone who would use either that way.

That's what fascinates me about the culture of this board. There are four or five different realities represented here, all pretty opinionated, yet there's almost no overlap between some of them.

I come here for a certain amount of food atrocity tourism. Being able to comment on it, then seeing people who actually eat that shit get all angry about it cracks me up. That's only a small part of why I come here, but it wouldn't be the same without it.

>>
>>7264812
This is my home board. I also frequent /out/ and /diy/

Each of those have their lame meme posts, but it's far less prevalent. It comes down to having decent janitors. When shit threads are deleted in a timely manner, relevant threads don't get bumped off as fast.
>>
>>7263982
We only have ourselves to blame, if we want quality threats we need to make them ourselves (and have a purge, Stalin style).

I'm the anon who's been making the frozen pizzas with anchovies and various other toppings threads, and just wanted to clear up a couple of things.

I worked 3 years as a line cook, cook at home almost every day, know how to make all sorts of pizza from scratch (even Chicago deep dish!), and usually post helpful advice for people trying something out for the first time that I might know something about. The frozen pizza threads are just for fun.

Also, it's other people reposting that picture of the pizza with anchovies, tomatoes and olives, not me.

The use of the word "meme" in general has become cancer here.

Just a year ago the only time you'd even see that word was when someone from a different board came here and started a thread asking for /ck/'s best memes, and people would go, "uhh, milksteak and pink Himalayan salt, I guess?"

Pic related. It's from fucking /tv/, which has pretty much been a dead/shitposting board for years now, and even there calling everything a meme is a recent phenomenon.

You're not even here for any semi-decent discussion. You're only here to make the board cater to your inner and outer manchild

There is literally an entire board for people like you

>>>/s4s/
>>
>>7264979

I've seen threads started on /tv/ that were obviously meant to be posted on a different board, and the people there are so uninterested in the board topic that they will respond as though it doesn't matter.
>>
>>7265001
>You're not even here for any semi-decent discussion.
Sometimes I am. It's about a 1:3 ration of actual discussion to shitposting. Sorry that I like to enjoy myself on a website that I've used primarily for amusement and laughter for almost half of my life.

>remember when this board used to be good

No. All boards have always been shit, are shit, and always will be shit.

There will always be more bad threads than good. That doesn't mean there will never be any good threads, because there always has been some good threads.

You are just remembering the good threads, and forgetting all the vast majority of shit ones.
>>
>>7265005
>1:3 ratio of actual discussion to shitposting

Thanks for proving my point, again.

Please just leave for /tv/ again, or better yet /s4s/

I cannot even possibly imagine what amusement you get from constantly recycled content

>>

>always been shit

Even that's a meme by now and predictably someone had to post it. Gah.
>>
>>7265064
No, it's not a meme. What I mean is that the quality is a constant.
>>
>>7265139

There's been a clear decrease in quality site wide.
>>
>>7263982
/ck/ is shit because you are shit.

You must post the OC you wish to see on the board.
>>
>>7265151
/ck/ has been like this, with the difference that the meme of the month has come and gone, in like the last 6 years I've been here. I hear it was good right after it got created though, but I don't even think those people are still visiting here.
>>
>>7265151
the internet itself has decreased in quality due to censorship, wider userbase, (not just white and asian males 14-24 any more) general shittier global culture in general, and greater accessability. 4chan suffers from all of these quite a lot.
>>
Think us oldfags who were here in the mid 2000s just want better quality material. It's been over a decade of the same shitposting day in, day out. These old bones are tired and just want a discussion forego the nonsense.

Other than /b/ becoming less interesting when the antics there were forced away from illegal stuff it's always been the same (just moving faster). You check in on countless threads. Most of them suck. A good one comes along and suddenly a decent chunk of your time is wasted by it. And that's just enough to keep you checking in on the countless sucky threads. Because you know there'll be another good one sooner or later. 4Chan has always been like this.
>>
>>7263982
I've been visiting this place for about a month, posting rarely, learning a lot by lurking. What I can tell you is that this place is 5x better than /o/, so count your blessings.

pretty much this, to keep the board entertaining there needs to be room for shitposting, this is still 4chan

there should be a disignated youtube shill thread, all others should be deleted

I post OC, some people may not like it but the real way to make the board better is to stop whining and start making more quality threads, posting more OC, and pushing the shit off the board

I have waited to make a thread and bumped some dying threads just so I pushed the shitty one off the board

do something about it
>>
>>7265223
jesus fucking christ, you are fat as shit
>>
>>7265231
actually im pretty swole kiddo, work out sometime maybe lol
>>
As much as I've been shittalking the board in this thread, you guys have inspired me. I'm going to start doing cookalong threads. I may not be a great cook, but I'm a damn sight better than the tendies eaters who run this place right now. Unfortunately I probably won't be cooking anything particularly interesting until I make Japanese curry, and that can't happen until my roux comes (a week from today, according to Amazon).
>>
>>7264812
/b/ is my home board but i frequent this one quite a lot. /b/ and /ck/ are honestly the only boards i go to on a regular basis.
>>
>>7265223
/ck/ is fine without shitposting

I guess that depends on what one considers shitposting though
>>
>>7265280

OC is OC, and is always welcome.

Just don't start a thread with a blurry, sideways image of a dimly lit bowl of something unrecognizable.

>4chan now has a weeaboo cross-posting superiority from /a/ that ruins every thread because 'muh board culture, we've always been a japanese board'
>moderators are butt-fucking faggots that don't allow fun and would rather ban racism because they are hot-pocket chomping tumblrinas
>/pol/ has become the flagship site over /b/ so instead of clear, easy to spot shitposting, it is replaced by thinly veiled europe/america dick waving posts
>there is no sticky, and no one will ever agree on a sticky, so basic obvious questions are constantly showing up only to be breeding grounds for garbage posts (and remember, no fun allowed if one of these posts sparks discussion)
>recipes and content seldom last longer than a couple day, even on this slow board, so why would anyone want to put the time into posting anything compelling or interesting
>image boards in general are dying because too many normies are using forums as a place for upboats and a place to force their own agenda
>the new ultra-newfag wave of 4chinners are so pathetic and fat that fast-food and joey threads are legitimately interesting to some of these losers, to the point where there is more obsession than America to a European

Gamergate killed 4chan. A bunch of special snowflakes finally broke down the doors and invited a flood of political correctness to the board the divided the site. /pol/ is the new /b/ out of spite of the new user base and it constantly breeds shitposting as a form of counteracting potentially honest threads. The mods don't know what to do, because there is no unity on this damn forum anymore.

I hope you mean ranch dressing used as a condiment as in dipping chicken wings in (which is delicious, but, granted, not high quality food) and not as a normal salad dressing. There's nothing wrong with it as a salad dressing. If you've never eaten some wings or something like that and had some ranch to dip them in, and don't even know anyone who has, then yeah, I'd say you're a pretentious cunt. The fact that you can't understand why anyone would say that makes you even more of a pretentious cunt.
>>
>>7265350
>There's nothing wrong with it as a salad dressing
Agreed.
>If you've never eaten some wings or something like that and had some ranch to dip them in
Where I live they come with blue cheese dressing, not ranch. No less trashy but much more tasty.
>The fact that you can't understand why anyone would say that makes you even more of a pretentious cunt.
Now you sound butthurt, like someone who doesn't understand how anyone could dislike a normal food like tater tots.
>>
>>7263982
>Why has /ck/ gone to rat shit recently?
The influx of /pol/fags, shitposting, and increase of fast food threads.
[Not correlated in any way :^)]
>>
the three threads ive started in 2016 have all been invaded with shitposting, pubmed experts and /b/ nonsense. kind of sad really.

I still have hope

I'd just move on, honestly, and wait until it peters itself out, reddit is actually pretty good when you make an account and avoid /all/ the frontpage subs, if you're into niche stuff it's a pretty good resource for a lot of things.

Basing it off the front page is like basing 4chan off /tv/ and /pol/ and not /k/
>>
>>7266673
cool you should go there and never come back sounds groovy
