Let's start these beanies on low and I'll do some veggie prep. Added a little over 3 cups of water.

Healthy pile of onion. Gonna do em up nice with some garlic, salt, pepper and sunflower oil!
>>
I read you have to preboil beans because some horrible toxin in them the crock pot won't get rid of. Enjoy death.

I just made a shitton of chickpeas in mine.

I would normally use red onion but all I have is white. Gonna be downgrading to a 12" wok soon too.

Dry beans have rocks in them. Gotta sort them carefully. Might crack a tooth!
>>
>>7257445
overnight soak, or a quick boil and drain is about minimizing flatulence. It won't kill you, it just makes you harder to be around.
>>
>>7257519
I did indeed sort pre rinse.

>>7257521
This is partly true. Decided to peruse the net for "poisonous beans" and apparently it's mainly kidney and pinto beans that do have toxins that can be severely harmful. Boiling is indeed required to remove this toxin but my crock boils just fine when I cook beans so I'm not worried. Have also used this method several other times to no negative effects so I feel pretty safe. Still researching though to be more sure of information.

Reference from decent source

Seems red kidney is main bean to worry about.

Seems reasonable. I mainly use Pinto, and black in my slow cooker, so not sweating it. The only dish I use use Kidney in is chili (Fuck you, Texas). And I use canned for that.

Also did an egg bake which apparently I cooked at too high a temp and my glassware cracked. Fuck me.

>>7258018

Did you put a glass bowl directly on your rangetop? What's wrong with you?

No I put it in here. I thought it would be ok as long as I didn't go too hot. Definitely cooked too fast from the bottom though....First time trying to use the Dutch oven too
>>
>>7258045

1) Why on earth would you do that?

2) Did you bake it in the oven or did you put it on the rangetop?
>>
>>7258046
1) to bake using less energy than the full oven

2) range top - isn't that what Dutch ovens are all about?
>>
>>7258084

>>energy
Why is that a concern? Baking food in the oven costs fractions of a cent.

>>range top
You can use a dutch oven on a range top, but you certainly can't put a glass bowl on one. You should have just put the egg "bake" directly into the dutch oven. Why the glass at all?

3) You're making an egg bake. Why not....you know...BAKE IT?
>>
>>7258015
How long do dry beans take to cook in a crock pot?
>>
>>7258089
I know it's cheap but long story short my winters next year will be heated with a pot belly stove and I wanted to see how the oven would theoretically work on top of the stove. This would save me much energy. (My stove next year will be propane not electric)

I didn't want to put the egg straight in the oven because on the stove top it would cook faster from the bottom. Just like it did anyway sadly.

3) I was trying to bake it...just in a dutch oven

They are just finishing now. Added more honey and salt and pepper btw. Flavor is pretty solid now. Little bit of back of mouth/throat spice with a cumin - ey front flavor that is married nicely with the beans and honey. Just trying to let some water cook out now. I should have used a little less initially.
>>
>>7258106
Yes, but how many hours on average?
>>
>>7258099
I feel as if I had had a second trivet stacked in there the heat from the bottom would not have been an issue.

I am actually leaning towards this idea since buying one. Not sure how it's giving me any advantage over a nice tri ply pot of the same size
