What are some foods to get at a dollar store? Obviously not meat and produce. I'm thinking things like dry foods and stuff to save time and money. Are things there like rice, beans, cereal, flour, sugar, spices etc truly awful?
>>

Dollar store or dollar general? I like those fast bites at dollar general.
>>
eh we got some canned stuff from a big lots that wasn't too bad.
>>

Steak
>>

Their shrimp and lobster are to die for
>>
>>7204695
yea fast bites are pretty decent bout the same quality and price of value menu junk at fast food places
DG has relatively cheap jerky and summer sausage too
>>
>>7204692
Don't buy their canned red beans, they really suck and can spoil a chili. If you're gonna use canned beans get Progesso.
>>

>beans

Here's something that I can reccommend from DG. Their own brand orange soda. I don't drink it a lot and still have a bottle from like 6 months ago, but a few sips here and there is pretty good. It's better than Sunkist for a $1 or so for 1.5L.
>>
doesn't dollar general have sausage? I think the dollar general I went to had sausage. Didn't look too bad but I didn't try it so I don't know.

Yeah it's it's the standard stuff from Eckrich. Sometimes there's a frozen one too which isn't bad but the casing is too think and I have to peel it off and break it apart, I don't remember what brand that is.

It'll never go bad in a fridge. It's so full of preservitives that it might survive a nuclear war as long as it's refrigerated as long as it's refrigerated. It does lose it's carbonation but wtf, it never had much in the first place.

I typically buy Hillshire Farm, but that recently ballooned in price for some reason. Been considering trying Eckrich, especially since with coupon, its price is a third the price of HF at regular price.
Have you tried both? How does Eckrich compare?
>>
Dollar Tree > Dollar General
>>
>>7204744
I think Eckrich is better but given the price of both there's no reason to give both a try. Usually for what I see from Hillshire Farm, those are frozen, but Eckrich isn't frozen it's just kept in the fridge section. I find them to be two differerent things so shouldn't be directly compared.
>>
>>7204758
... not give both a try ...

i tried getting food there once, at what was basically the lowest point in my 35 years of life. my shit was as thick as molasses. the literal definition of buttmud.

Dollar General employee here. Most of our food products aren't much cheaper than Wal-Mart, especially if you're checking cost-to-product ratio.

If you see a product that expires within a week ask for a discount at the register and you'll usually get it unless you're being a turbo cunt.

I bought Dollar Tree steak once and it wasn't horrible, especially for a dollar. I usually buy seasonings, flour/sugar/baking soda/baking powder, rice and beans, ice cream, I like their big ass bags of popcorn.

It isn't good food but they sell shit. Namely chips, candy, soda, bread, pasta, canned vegetables, canned meat, dips, condiments, spices, drink mixes, snack cakes, box dinners, etc. They now sell milk, shit cheese, lunch meat, and frozen food. Extremely small selection. More recently I hear they sell shitty steaks and the bad macro beer.

page with product info seems to not be up anymore or perhaps down, but it american shreds has
>Water, Food Starch, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Whey, Salt, Casein and/or Caseinate, Sodium Phosphate, Sorbic Acid (as a preservative), Carrageen, Natural Flavor, Lactic Acid, Artificial Color, Powdered Cellulose to prevent caking.
so basically empty calories

>Pasteurized Process Topping
>>
>>7205141
>not formulated to melt
Isn't that the whole point of process cheese though?
>process topping
So, it's not even process cheese. It's just... process? Even garbage like TV dinners and Kraft slices have some kind of food element in them. Is it even legal to feed people something that intentionally isn't food?
>>
>>7205240
no and no.

Not all processed cheeses are meant not to melt. Rather, most are meant to melt in a consistent manner without the fats or other ingredients separating. It all depends on the manufacture's goal with the product and how well they formulate it to achieve the results.

and no it's not illegal as they dont call it cheese. it's not toxic (at least in regularly consumable doses), sure it's basically nothing but as long as they dont call it cheese or advertise it as such, they can get away with it. It is highly deceptive though for them to be giving it such a cheese like product and package appearance , not to mention giving it a name befitting of some shitty shredded cheese. They're relying on uninformed, poor and/or impulsive shoppers, so it could be possible that some sort of lawsuit be filled but really it's not worth anyone's time, the best thing to do is just not buy it and let them phase it out, better yet though getting them bad publicity for such shameful products.
>>
>>7205240
It's probably cheaply made and not properly emulsified and just separates when heated
>>
The Dollar Tree cheezits are pretty legit.
