What do you accomplish by searing a steak in a pan for a couple minutes per side, then putting it on the oven at 400?
Why not just finish in it a pan?
it would get too dark if you tried to cook a thick steak all the way in a pan

the pan is too hot, it'll burn the steak or the drippings in the pan. the oven also heats evenly so you don't have to keep flipping.
although i've found a way that's a little easier and you don't need to use the oven. just cook your steak on medium low until it's near your desired doneness, and set it aside on a plate. then heat the pan to medium-high/high, and sear it.

What if it's a relatively thin/normal NY strip?

I wouldn't bother with the oven with anything under an inch
I cook skirt stake by just laying on hot charcoal for about 30 each side, then wrap in aluminum.
