Bourbon/Whisky/Whiskey/Scotch General

What's your favorite, what are your questions, and what do you like to mix it with?

About the only way to drink Crown, that's for sure.

alberta springs 10year, with a dash of soda water. so nice.

I'll admit, I haven't had a ton of variety. Most of the ones people speak the most highly of, I've only had once or twice. But, my go-to is Bulleitt Bourbon.
>>
>>7189132

the first peaty scotch i had was Ardbeg Uigeadail. The first sip literally brought tears to my eyes. Then, I added a couple of drops of water and took another sip. Those couple of drops literally turned my opinion of smoky scotch around: it tempered it just enough to make it enjoyable. Since I enjoy cigars, cigarettes, campfires, etc. anyways, I found that I really enjoyed the smoke. Laphroaig is a nice choice if you don't want to spring for the bottle of Ardbeg.
>>
>>7189282
Ardbeg 10 is better than Laphroaig.
>>
>>7189340
A bit better and a bit more expensive.

Though, they're moderately different. Laphroaig has more of a mariney iodine seaweed and mineral-y ness, Ardbeg is to my nose, heavier on citrus (lime) with hints of tar that, with water/oxidization, approach chocolate.
>>
>>7189340
Define "better." When you're looking at the decent stuff, you're simply looking at different experiences that you select depending on your mood and preferences. Neither of them taste trashy.

Generally like it with a single cube, as per pic related, albeit with a preferably smaller cube than my fridge makes.

Scotch is a mystery to me. I've never really had the money to explore it too much. I've had nice smokey scotch, I believe peat is the correct way to describe it, but mostly I just get the taste of iodine. Anyone more educated care to educate me?
>>
I don't mix brown liquor often. But, in the winter, I do sometimes keep a tall glass of whole milk with a couple ice cubes to sip at as a chaser. Everyone reacts like I'm nuts when I tell them that. But, brown liquor is something I only really have in the winter, when I also crave richer tasting nonalcoholic drinks like milk.

Nothing like when it starts to snow on your week off, the sun has set, no responsibilities tomorrow, and I can just drink on a pint of whiskey, a few glasses of milk, and enjoy some fried ham or bacon in front of a space heater with a long playlist of TV shows and a sleeping cat on the floor.
>>
I'm fond of Irish whiskeys. American rye whiskeys are pretty good too, though they tend to be hard to find where I live.
>>
Smoke and peat is where it's at, so Caol Ila would be my go to drink

My parents were gifted some woodford reserve and I've been drinking it since I'm home for break and they don't like any whiskey at all. It's alright, call me a pleb all you like but I prefer wild turkey. Woodford has a strange almost acidic taste that's offputting.

The starter choices are Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, both 12yo. The 'livet is all fruit while the 'fiddich ha a touch of smoke.

I'm currently drinking this.

Weller 12 year is amazing and is pretty much the same shit as Pappy, regular Weller is also better than Makers imo.

How can they get away with claiming that stuff is "small batch" when it it comes from like the Nestle of whiskey?
>>
>>7191694
Diageo may own them, but it's not like Diageo is anything but a capital investment firm that owns smaller places.
>>
>>7191703
the whiskey itself is a very mass produced whiskey from MGP

Does the small batch possibly refer to the amount of mash that is fermented at one time?
>>
>>7191712

Apparently it's disputable. If a factory that large can make "small batch" then the term is meaningless and anyone could.

Got the yearly bottling of Lagavulin 12 cask strength, but I don't have the heart to open it just yet. Had a sample at the shop and it was great. The peat-smoke is much stronger than the 16 which I'm sure is compounded by being 57%, very thick and Ardbeg-y, and at the same time very bright and fruity in a way that would make me think of sherry maturation, but the whiskey is clear and pale, so that probably isn't right. Fino sherry is pale, but it's also not so fruity. Anyway shit's good, one of the best I've had.

I don't drink alcohol so I don't know shit about scotch, but a co-worker gave me a bottle of Johnnie Walker Platinum, aged 17 years it says

Is that any good?

For the price it's nothing special. That right there is gift whisky. It's enjoyable, and as a non-afficionado of Scotch you might even like it. But nothing to brag to your Islay-chugging friends about.

Mixed a hot toddy toddy tonight. Water boiled with a cinnamon stick, JD, lemon, and honey. Feel sick as fuck, this has doing a better job than nyquil.
