Nuts, and lots of vegetables, have what are called in layman's terms, anti-nutrients. That is to say compounds that actually inhibit the absorption of vitamins and minerals and all sorts of things.
Sadly many people don't take this into account, and those who rely heavily on nuts and certain vegetables are probably significantly less healthy than they think they are.

The good thing about Brazil Nuts is that one nut contains over 100% your daily intake of selenium, which is really good for your thyroid/hormone stuff.
However, it is possible to overdose on selenium and get selenium poisoning, so I wouldn't eat more than 2 or 3 at a time if you're one of those rare people who likes to eat them raw or put them in recipes.

Cashews are related to poison ivy. I think the gases when roasting cashews is toxic as a result, and that they are utterly poisonous until roasted and the sap is driven off.
From wikipedia:
The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the better-known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Properly roasting cashews destroys the toxin, but it must be done outdoors as the smoke (not unlike that from burning poison ivy) contains urushiol droplets which can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening, reactions by irritating the lungs. People who are allergic to cashew (or poison ivy) urushiols may cross-react to mango or pistachio which are also in the Anacardiaceae family.
I _have_ noticed some batches a little tingly, so I only assumed might not be roasted to the right point of driving off the poison.

That can happen with most nuts due to tannins. Some are worse than others and need prepped properly. Chestnuts needs roasted, acorns need leeched with excessive water, etc.
