What do you think of minced garlic from a jar?

Do you use it, buy it, is it useless?
>>
If I have to mix it into a dish without cooking it, sure. If I'm sauteeing it, not worth it. The preservatives fuck with the texture.
>>
>useless

The citric acid they add messes up the taste IMO.
>>
>>7149050
It's alright if you can't be bothered. Especially when every other aspect of a dish is already prepared and you don't want to clean a knife and cutting board just to add a bit of garlic.
>>
Fresh minced > Factory minced > Garlic powder

In that order.
>>
>>7149108
This.

If your knife skills are lackluster and you're not looking to learn. Just buy a jar or whatever or it.
>>
>>7149050
capitalist cancer-inducing carcinogenic

it's not hard to mince garlic

>>

>garlic is expensive
Why crazy shithole of a place do you live in that garlic is expensive?
>>
>>7149324
for you!

learn how to use the auto-checkout and enjoy your freshly minced "potatoes".
or just grow your own.
>>
I tried a little jar of minced garlic once after a thread on here about it maybe 5 months ago or so. The shit was way over powering and tasted awful and not much like garlic except the after taste burps. I ruined an entire dish with it. From now on I just mince my own like I use to so I can measure it properly and not have weird additives. Plus actual garlic is actually cheaper, I think, even with the weird feeling on my fingers when I touch it.
>>
>>7149324
one dollar bought me like 8 full garlic bunches, and this was at the expensive store near me.
>>
>>7149050
I was thinking of buying this. I use like 4 garlic cloves nearly every night when i'm cooking. It's not a major hassle to peel and chop, but at the same time it is. Really can't be fucking arsed sometimes.
>>
If the ingredients list lists other things besides "garlic," then do not want.

I think it's great. But I prefer crushed to minced.

It tastes the same, costs about the same, its hassle-free, keeps for over a year. What's not to love?
>>
>>7151152
i bet your sperm tastes like shit
>>
>>7151173
It probably does but why would I care?
>>
i used a b ig jar of that same stuff for like a year

its super easy compared to cutting garlic, and the flavor is more intense than garlic powder, obviously

i have no qualms with minced garlic

one thing i was always sure to do is drain the liquid before putting in the pan.

>>7151176
if someone ever sucks your dick theyre going to get a mouthful of garlic
>>
>>7151184
I dont think thats how it works, but then again ive never tasted semen before
>>
>>7149050
I always keep some around in case I'm feeling lazy and/or out of actual garlic.
>>
>>7151184
In that case they're probably gonna get a mouthful of beer and onions as well.
>>
i bought a jar of this shit and gave it a try because garlic is annoying

completely ruined my food
>>
I always rinse it before I add it to a dish. Previous posters are right. The oil they pack it in has additives that make it taste weird. Once you drain all of that off, however, it's actually OK. Strain and rinse it before using IMHO.
>>
we use that OP pic brand of garlic at AT&T Park for the garlic fries, and we drain the oils from in the jar before we mix it in vegetable oil and slather it on the shitty fries
>>
What about ginger? I've always found them to be a much bigger hassle than garlic. Can a small box of ground ginger replace fresh ones?
>>
>>7152737
Ginger is one of those things where the fresh and dried versions are different enough that they're both worth using. Dried would be strange in a sti fry, and wouldn't add any freshness from acid, whereas fresh would be dull and unpleasant in a cookie.

If you have a small grater, use that for the fresh stuff, or you can just cut large slices without bothering to peel as long as you're not serving food to whiny bitches.
>>
>>7149050
I like it once in a while. Smear it on both halves of a hoagie roll, then top with some kind of cheese, put under the broiler. that is literally the only use
>>
>>7152765
>Dried would be strange in a sti fry
Huh. The box of ginger I bought literally says it's for stir fries.

>If you have a small grater, use that for the fresh stuff
That's what I've always been doing and it's very frustrating to scrape the ginger off of them.
>>
>>7152777
Do you remember the brand? I want to witness this.

Madness. I have to admit I've never tried it as I've always got fresh ginger around, it just seems like it would be very odd in a stir fry.

If you aren't going with fresh, these are a reasonable substitute. Beats minced like your OP pic.

If I ever end up so far gone that I find myself using one of those, I hope some small dark corner of my mind retains enough strength to slit my wrists open with the side of the blister pack.
>>
>>7149050
My mom used to take a bunch garlic and mash it in a mortar and pestle.
She's save it in a jar kept in the fridge
>>
>>7151173
It's baby human children, it's not going to taste like baby cow. Grow up, choke on it, make your man happy even if it's pretend on your part.
>>
>>7149050
It's not flavorless, I'd use it in a pinch, but I would always much rather have fresh garlic. Much better flavor.

Once you get the hang of it, you can mince garlic way faster by smacking it once, peeling off the peel, smacking it harder, and then mincing.

The time savings on the pre-minced stuff aren't worth it unless you are running a restaurant. At normal-people volume, the better flavor is worth the time.

The only issue I have is using it in anything milk based due to the vinegar.
>>
>>7152991
No idea what you're talking about. It practically minces itself if you whack it with your knife. Garlic hands is a legit issue, but they invented soap for that.
>>
I don't really understand why you'd use minced garlic in a jar. Why not just get a $6 garlic crusher? Fresh garlic is better, and probably cheaper.

Alton Brown's opinion of kitchen gadgets is the exact opposite of what you said senpai

He hates "unitaskers" and advocates using a small set of simple tools for everything

Not saying he's some ultimate chef or anything but you ought to check yourself before wrecking yourself and posting incorrect shit

No it doesn't. It tastes bland as hell compared to fresh garlic, and it's not as if it takes any effort to mince garlic on your own. If you need a little then smash it with a knife. If you need a lot then toss it in the food processor or blender.

You must smoke or have 0 sense of taste / smell. Tastes the same.
>>
>>7153364
>You must smoke

I'd say the same to you. It's pretty simple, anon:
Foods like this are "hot packed". In other words the food is cooked and then the jar is filled with the hot food. That's why it can sit on the shelf without refrigeration until you open the container. That cooking process mellows the flavor of the garlic.

Also, the moment you mash garlic some of the aromatics start to evaporate. That's why you can smell the garlic so much stronger. Why crush the garlic weeks ago and let the flavor escape when you could crush it right before you need it?
>>
I always keep a small jar in my fridge, because you never know when you might run out of garlic or your garlic goes off. So why the fuck not? Everything needs garlic and you have preserved garlic in your fridge. Why wouldn't you want that? Obviously fresh is better but why wouldn't you want a backup? Hell, sometimes I use fresh garlic and decide I need more and don't want to mince fresh again, so I throw a spoonful of this shit into the pot anyway.

>>7149108
Garlic powder is a WHOLE different beast altogether. Often when I use it, I need both garlic powder AND fresh garlic. Sometimes not, though. Fresh garlic is necessary for a marinade, but when it comes time to season a piece of meat? You're using garlic powder or you're doing it wrong.

I simply store more fresh garlic as my backup.

i agree with this. when i was younger, i was making a pizza and put jarred garlic on it. i could only taste the citric acid and it ruined the whole pizza. never used it since.

you could buy the ones that are just peeled in a jar, and toss them in a small food processor when you need some.

It's alright. Useful for most dishes with garlic as a ingredient surrounded by many other flavors. For dishes where garlic is the main flavor though I'd say use fresh.
>>
>>7149115
why not use one of those garlic presses? seems like that would be the middle ground if you're too assed to learn how to use a knife.
>>
>>7155256
the best ones can sometimes be a pain to clean, there are new gimmicky types coming out all the time so perhaps there's some better ones on the market these days. But a good old metal garlic press will work wonders and last you a lifetime.
