Sup /ck/, I'm going to make some shakshuka in a bit, still haven't gone to the store to grab stuff. Any tips, its my first time making it
>>
arab here

it's a pretty simple dish really

just make sure you let it simmer with all the spices and ingredients in it for a good 15-20 minutes on low-medium heat. once you feel it is time, just add the eggs and turn up the heat to medium, and let it simmer while covered. the egg part should take about 10 minutes.
>>
Seems pretty hard to fuck up.

Just remember that the eggs will continue cooking after you take it off the heat, so take that into account and don't overcook them.

Would adding red bell peppers be haram? I feel like it would go well with it
>>
>>7122449
adding red bell peppers is pretty normal, they just have to be diced real small
>>
>>7122291
I usually halve green olives and throw them in there. Shakshuka is delectable, simple, and relatively healthy!
>>
>>7122291
I just made a HELLA ghetto version of this, put up some jalapenos and long hot peppers with garlic and onion in a blender, cooked that in a pan for a while and poured some crushed tomatoes in there. Dropped a few eggs in the spicy sauce and let them harden up a bit.

Taste is on point Tbh
>>
>>7122291
If you're using tinned tomatoes, drain the juice and if you need it later on, just add a tiny bit back in.

I make this all the time, great way to use up eggs.

>>7125650
doing the same but have never done it before. Plan to make a few changes and post results
>>
>>7125678
Guy above you. Also never done it and also planning to make slme changes. Was thinking adding half a zucchini I have left in the fridge and cous cous to make it soup-like and more calorie dense. What did you have in mind?
>>
>>7125702
since it's already using onion and peppers I just plan to finish out the trinity and saute them with some chopped celery. The mushrooms in OPs posts and chef john's video looked like a good addition so that. I also got a bunch of spinach i need to use so i may chop it up and let it wilt in the skillet before throwing in the crushed tomatos

Zucchini sounds good especially if you are doing it with the mushrooms like op, would probably put them in just before laying in the egg though since I like it to have some crunch
>>
This is a Palestinian food. My grandmother was making it before the Israelis settled. They eventually refugees to Jordan because settlers threatened to kill them if they don't leave their homes.
She also used to get the stale leftover bread that she would make and soak it in shakshuka. I forgot what it was called but it's amazing.
She passed away though
>>
>>7125781
>This is a Palestinian food
>Callingbullshit.gif
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakshouka
"Shakshouka is a staple of Tunisian, Libyan, Algerian, Moroccan, and Egyptian cuisines, traditionally served in a cast iron pan or tajine with bread to mop up the sauce. It is also popular in Israel, where it was introduced by Tunisian Jews and Maghrebi Jews, hundreds of thousands of whom immigrated to Israel during the 1950s."
>>
>>7125781
> before the Israelis settled
you mean before the Jews took over someone elses property.

>refugees to Jordan because settlers threatened to kill them if they don't leave their homes
You mean like the Nazi's did back in the late 30's?

Lol.. At least the Germans were in their own country and forcing Jews out or die..
The fucking Jews show up at your door, tell you to get out, then move in.. After moving in, they tell you leave 'their' country or die.

AMERICA WE MUST DEFEND THESE PRECIOUS PEOPLES AND GIVE THEM OUR MONIES

Good luck, enjoy!!
>>7125702
Zucchini is interesting, I imagine it would cook pretty well. Might want to make sure it doesn't overcook so it's just mush. I put in olives and other than that, I stick to the recipe usually.

Also, I just made mine.... Had it cooking and thennnn realized I have no eggs. God damnit.
>>
good thread OP.

I like to imagine you are a fat bottomed Israeli girl making this for me the morning after we met at a club and humpes like bunnies all night at your plaxe
>>
>>7125781
Nah it's North African and Jewish Tunisian specifically.
>>
>>7125781
Israelis are like shrill whiny rape victims who were given a bunch of guns instead of counseling and anxiety pills

It's pathetic that everyone jumps to their defence whenever they commit another atrocity because of guilt over something happened to their great great grandparents 100 years ago

Yeah the holocaust sucked but why should millions of innocent people who had nothing to do with it get shat on forever as a sick sort of "revenge"

this shit is seriously delicious. Thanks OP for this thread and making me try this out

>>7126268
about 3 min before the eggs

gotta say as well this is the first time using parsley as a garnish made a huge and positive difference in the finished dish. The flavor typically gets lost when I use it in red meat stews
>>
>>7126276
I just poked the top of the eggs every now and then while they were cooking and took it off the heat when they seemed close to done since as anon mentioned in >>7122331 turned out good but I would have liked it a bit softer even.
>>
On a side note, I think ricotta or even feta cheese is delicious in this. Gives you some rank ass farts though.
>>
Happy I found this thread. I made shakshuka once about 4 years ago and I remember it turned out pretty tasty. Was thinking of making it again tomorrow. Unfortunately I can't remember which spices I used. I was thinking going for coriander seeds, paprika and fennel seeds, but i'm not sure though.

What spices do you use in your shakshuka?
>>
>>7126362
I usually put garlic, cumin, coriander, chili powder, paprika and some cayenne in mine when I make it.

Fuck, now I want to make some too after looking at this thread. Maybe I'll make it later this week.
>>
>>7126358
feta's what I used tonight, I recommend it
>>
>>7126388
I'll probably use some cumin as well. Do you like the idea of fennel seeds? Should I use them whole, bash them up or just skip them altogether?
>>
>>7126362
cumin, cayenne, paprika is pretty solid. 1:1:2
>>
>>7126425
I'll definitely use cumin, coriander and paprika. Not sure about the cayenne though, I'm going to use a couple of green chilis and they will create a sufficient heat.
>>
>>7126422
I dunno, it may be ok but personally I would skip it since I'm not a huge fan of the flavor it adds.
>>
>>7126436
I added jalopenos in mine, I'm OP, all they did was soak up the oil and sauce and lose all their heat. I added seeds and all. I think the cayenne really did add the last bit of heat. In any case, it's your choice.
>>
>>7126438
I like it in certain dishes. I've had the same big bag of fennel seeds for years and I want to use it it more often and not only for certain pasta dishes and homemade curry powder.
>>
>>7126422

i do fennel and anchovies in this sort of thing a lot.
>>
>>7126457
fennel seeds with sausage onions and peppers and potatoe(AKA Ameri-Italian soul food) is fucking amazing.
>>
>>7126451
You might have a point. I can't seem to find really hot green peppers in my area, so I bought quite a few in the hopes of making the shakshuka spicy enough, also for color. Cayenne is not a spice that needs to be cooked out so it wouldn't be a big deal to add it towards the end.

>>7126465
That sounds fucking awesome. I have an unopened can of anchovies around here somewhere.

>>7126473
I always buy salsiccia flavored with fennel when I make sausage, peppers and onions. The wife would beat me if I didn't.
>>
>>7126362
Curry powder, smoked paprika, cayenne, fresh garlic that you sautee with the onions and shit. Then anything else you might like. I use those 4 as my staples though.

>>7126271
Looks pretty good mane. It did look a little watery at first, but it reduced well. I'm always worried I let too much water from the canned tomatoes in, but it always reduces down on the stove and kinda congeals once it's sat for a minute. Glad you liked it, it's a staple in my house now. Good for breakfast as well!
>>
Is using tomato passata a cardinal sin? Can I use it or do I need diced/whole tomatos?
>>
>>7122291
If you're following the Food Wishes' recipe, its pretty hard to fuck up and it tastes good. Just follow the recipe and make sure you have toasted bread on hand.
>>
>>7127778
>Curry powder

Really? I dunno, It's not supposed to taste indian. If I wanted something indian I would cook something indian.
