I would say what it means to be a religions fundamentalist has changed substantially while the tenants of progressivism have remained relatively static. Progressivism is still defined by feminine emotional thinking in the place of logic as it always was. They happened upon a few good ideas and luckily gave up some of their worst like prohibition, but it isn't really that different. Meanwhile southern religious politics have been hijacked by some real crazy equally poor ideologies

The alcohol regulation and bureaucracy around it in New York and most other large municipalities is ridiculously complex and designed to make buying and selling alcohol more difficult. Its no coincidence how much more expensive alcohol is in New York than in rural and suburban areas of the north that have never been controlled by progressives too strongly
