Not this one, though I've made them in the past. Not very difficult and the dough used is a very easy, non-challenging recipe.

This one, at least, is from a local butcher shop so it's still hand made and fresh.

That's a good question. I think it's a combination of a history of invasions and a relatively fuel poor country. Pastry wrapped food is transportable and keeps better for a moving army, and the recipes get picked up by locals. It's also a cheaper and more convenient way to cook if you only have access to communal ovens. You cook your own filling, wrap it in pastry and give it to the village baker while you go off to work for the day, then claim the pie with you mark when you're done.

I mostly pulled that out of my ass though, so who knows?

I like my pastry super soft. Similar to, but not quite, a suet pastry, and I like my filling really moist and juicy.

Yeah that's a problem; there's only one large Morrisons that I know of in Bristol, and I'm not going to drive across town to get some pies.

Might need to find a recipe actually, I quite fancy having a try and making my own pork pies.
