I notice when ordering pizza online, if you add more toppings, they charge you the same amount for each 'extra', but the amount you get is reduced. I mean if you just order pepperoni you might get 20 discs, and if you order meatballs you might get 10 meatballs, but if you order pepperoni and meatballs you get like 15 pepperonis and 8 meatballs

Uh yeah, that's because with each topping you add the pizza takes longer to cook. Do you know how long it would take (and how heavy....) a pizza with everything would be if each topping was distributed the same amount it would be if it were the only topping? It'd be ridiculous
So yeah, the more toppings you get you're basically paying for the option to have more, not exactly getting more, but really there's no other way to do it

Charge $1 for one topping
Charge $0.75 each for two toppings
You're still paying per topping and the price goes up but the per topping price would reflect the amount.
Of course it's easier to just charge a flat rate and assume no one will notice or give enough of a fuck to make an issue out of it.

When I worked at a pizza place they didn't do that. We would tell them anything over 4 or 5 topping won't cook properly but would still do it, cooking it for longer. The exception would be 'works' or 'veggie' menu items. These were cheaper than getting the same number of toppings so less were added, and to cook it properly.
The worst pizza I made was half pepperoni half something like: spinach chicken pineapple jalapeño and tomato (it was at least close to that). One side with 1 topping the other with super watery toppings. It looked like shit and the cheese had barely melted but they said it was great. To each their own I guess.
As for best pizza: I prefer pepperoni and mushroom, that is all
