People are so reliant on cards now, sometimes it's easy to forget how useful cash can be sometime. Legal US tender accepted everywhere negro, not everywhere takes all types of cards or sometimes machines or systems are having issues, etc.

I worked at a Subway a few years ago, and one time our computer/system went down for an hour. The people that had cash could still get their food, and the rest had to leave.
Cards rely on machines, and machines fail. Software has bugs. Systems go down for emergency maintenance.
When it comes down to it, the cards in your wallet have no monetary backing whatsoever, so it isn't unreasonable to carry cash with you for that one time when you go through the drive-thru and they aren't accepting plastic.
