His argument is that you shouldn't quibble about definitions yet that is exactly what he does. Either you define a sandwich as a thing between two piece of bread, or you don't. I do since that is the only consistent definition in keeping with the verb 'to sandwich' in the English language
>>
>>7080976
By that standard, do you only consider pancakes to be only pancakes when they are dropped straight to the ground or flattened via collision or mishap, as is the definition of the verb 'to pancake'?
>>
>>7081003
to pancake is hardly a common verb, to sandwich is.
>>
>>7081003
No, you are reading the logic the wrong was around. To pancake is to make something like a pancake, not to make a pancake. To sandwich is to make something like a sandwich, ergo a sandwich must be defined as something between two other things.
>>
>>7081009
I hear that used quiet a bit, never been much for the kek scene, so sandwiched as a verb is usually only used on mass transportation, but I'm not judging you at all.
>>
>>7080966
>But if we accept that a neat meal package of either hinged or wrapping breads or the classic two-slice model are the ontological bases for a sandwich, suddenly we must introduce new food to that classification – arepas, banh mi, a disruptive new egg roll out of Shanghai the size of a football or an infant. The sandwich evolves and broadens as we do, without abandoning the intent that informs it and animates it. A hot dog is a sandwich. A taco is a sandwich. God bless them, God bless America, God bless sandwiches.

Are you really following the logic of someone that thinks tacos and arepas are sandwiches?
>>
>>7081027
A taco is a sandwich, amigo. Just because their brown doesn't mean they don't have feelings.
>>
>>7081019
>A sandwich is defined as something between two other things

So cold cuts are sandwiches? Pizza sauce is the sandwich between the cheese and bread?
>>
>>7081030
So you consider this a sandwich.
>>
>>7081032
No, the verb 'to sandwich' is derived from the noun 'sandwich' which is defined as stuff between two slices of bread. To sandwich something is more losely defined based on the noun, but obviously not limited to bread.
>>
>>7081036

>>
>>7081066
If it breaks in two it becomes a sandwich.
>>
>>7081054
Not yet. But you can tell it's about to be folded over and that's when it can accurately be described as a sandwich.

>>7081119
You are correct, but I lack those critical OCD tendencies. I still think we lack the critical evidence that proves the person, or persons, responsible intended to fold the bread.
>>
>>7081126
They contain eggs, and are usually softer. Tortillas are just flat bread. Crepes and pancakes are not used in the same ways as tortillas.
>>
>>7081137
Pancakes don't need eggs to be considered pancakes and they don't need to be used in the same way.
>>
>>7081160
You can make a bunch of arbitrary changes to recipes, but it still remains that pancakes generally contain eggs and are used for sweet dishes, and tortillas are flat bread generally used to wrap up food and dip into hummus or whatever.
>>
>>7081175
Generally does not mean always. And it's not arbitrary considering you're the one objecting to tortillas being pancakes simply because they do not contain eggs.
>>
>>7081184
They don't contain eggs, and they are used differently.

Tortillas are generally not like pancakes or crepes. they are part of the flat bread family, like all the other not sweet, not rich or fluffy, plain dough breads.

I'm sure it differs by culture, I'm just saying you go ask around, nobody calls tortillas pancakes, because they aren't made to be like pancakes, they don't taste like pancakes, they aren't used like pancakes.

What a surprise.

Flatbreads (like tortillas) are also usually kneaded and shaped before frying them. Pancakes are usually made with batter.
>>
>>7081228
Read the definition and look at the examples. Here are some that don't use eggs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appam
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dosa
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bannock_(food)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnnycake

And the difference between a dough and a batter is liquid content.
>>
>>7081248
Bannock and Johnnycake are labelled as flat breads in those articles, and yet are put on the pancake page. It's very difficult to categorize everything perfectly.

Crepes often contain eggs, I think we can agree on that. Tortillas rarely contain eggs, I think we can also agree there. So it makes no sense to call them both pancakes.

Have I mentioned recently that they are used differently? Do you often go to a retaurant and order a big old stack of TORTILLAS with maple syrup? Or specifically order burritos made with crepes?
>>
>>7081292
>So it makes no sense to call them both pancakes.
Based on what? I already proved you wrong.

>Have I mentioned recently that they are used differently? Do you often go to a retaurant and order a big old stack of TORTILLAS with maple syrup? Or specifically order burritos made with crepes?

You can do those things. You can make sandwiches out of tortillas and crepes. You can chop em up and fry them. Doesn't change what they are because they're used in a different way than intended.

>>
>>7081318
Based on them having more in common with flat breads than pancakes (eggs, dough consistency, use). Based on every definition of tortilla ever that called them bread and not cake.

You can do those things but nobody does. Nobody would eat a stack of tortillas. You can make a sandwich out of cake, but that doesn't make it bread.
>>
>>7081349
Eggs and dough consistency are not unique to pancakes and I already showed you that pancakes do not need eggs to be pancakes.

Cake is bread though.
>>
>>7079184
>those champagne flutes

I can see myself being a third wheel or something drunkenly devouring that while I giggle to myself in the corner watching television while my mate and his 1 night stand try to attempt forplay
>>
>>7081354
That's how you make the majority of crepes. You put eggs in it, and you make a thin batter that you pour onto a grill. Like a pancake.

Tortillas are made with dough that gets kneaded, and flattened out, then grilled. Like a flatbread.

You don't need eggs to make pancakes but most of them do contain eggs. Almost no tortilla or flatbread recipes contain eggs. So it makes sense to differentiate between the two.

Cake is not bread. Is it technically a kind of bread? Sure. Just like a pancake is a kind of bread, and a tortilla is a kind of bread. And buns, and pretzels, and crackers, and chips. They are all their own individual things however.
>>
>>7081380
I'm not denying that crepes are made with eggs. Not all pancakes need eggs and a thin batter just like I have already shown you.

Yes and that makes them pancakes too. Tortillas don't need to be kneaded because they traditionally don't use leavening or use chemical leavening if they do.

>You don't need eggs to make pancakes but most of them do contain eggs.
Finally you agree

> So it makes sense to differentiate between the two.
Yeah and somehow that means they're completely different things?? You keep getting confused for some reason.

Cake is bread. What specifically about cake makes it not bread?

>They are all their own individual things however.
And they're still all related.

>>
>>7081398
Most pancakes require eggs and batter, if they don't they've been placed into the pancake group for other reasons, or because they didn't fit anywhere else. Like that Bannock, which is more of a quick bread.

A tortilla has so little in common with the pancake group. And they absolutely do have to be kneaded, how else would you mix the dough. Just like pancake batter needs to be stirred.

>Yeah and somehow that means they're completely different things?

Yes. They are separate things. A tortilla is not a pancake or a crepe because they are so different, and it is a flat bread because they are so similar. They might not be perfectly different, or perfectly similar, but it's close enough.

>Cake is bread
There are variants of each that toe the line but generally speaking cake is not bread. If you call a birthday cake a loaf of bread, people will think you have mental impairments. But banana bread, yeah sure, that's probably a cake or a bread.

>And they're still all related.

And yet different. Why call them pancakes when we can just call everything made with flour bread? Why do we call ourselves humans when we're just apes?
>>
>>7081457

>>
>>7081517
They are simultaneously pieces of a sandwich and sandwiches in their own right
>>
>>7081466
Most does not mean all and batter and dough vary in their liquid content. We've gone over those points multiple times.

I was wrong about the kneading thing. I thought you meant specifically kneading for a long time to help give the final product its structure, not simply mixing and combining the ingredients.

>A tortilla is not a pancake or a crepe because they are so different, and it is a flat bread because they are so similar.

Tortillas and crepes both use a starch, a liquid, and are cooked on pans. Wow they're so different that they cannot be considered pancakes.

>There are variants of each that toe the line but generally speaking cake is not bread. If you call a birthday cake a loaf of bread, people will think you have mental impairments. But banana bread, yeah sure, that's probably a cake or a bread.
>What specifically about cake makes it not bread?

I can only imagine the reason why you think they're so different is because most cakes use chemical leaveners but those are not unique to cakes. Cakes often used yeast before the invention of chemical leaveners.
