Drinking this stuff. One of the best US pilseners I've had, if not the best. Fairly priced too.

Currently on a student exchange trip to the Czech Republic for a few months, the birthplace of the modern pilsner. So for the last few weeks I've been trying to taste as many pilsners as possible.

The beer here tastes amazing. The weird thing is, even the very cheap beers still taste good. The beers usually cost about 0.5 euro for half a liter, so its amazing value for money
>>

>>
You should all try this
>>
>>7077425
Yes it is. Such a good ale. I wish it were available year round, but that wouldn't make it a treat for the holidays. May have to go to the local liquor store and see if I can purchase a few cases. Also, I picked up the Miller High Life because I was feeling some day drinking and was tired of Coors Light.
>>7077469
Good stuff. I used to drink that a lot a few years back. Firestone Walker is one of my favorite breweries. Wookey Jack has been my jam lately.
>>
>>7077469
The only DIPA I buy anymore is Surly Abrasive once a year
>>
>>7077425
If it really is a fresh hop beer, it only will stay stable in the bottles for a couple of months. Hence why you can only get it for a little while after the fall hop harvest.
>>
>>7074809

Do I have bad taste if I think this tastes almost like nothing? Its bland. Im trying to get into beers but all the ones Ive tried have been boring. Granted Ive only had the "typical" American ones like busweiser, coors, yuengling, but I heard Boston Lager had quite a good reputation even among beer snobs. But I dont see it.

I had a sip of an IPA once, and it seemed to have a lot more flavor.
>>
>>7077795
Unless you drinking almost flavorless beer flavored water like light beer I don't see how you could think that and even I could easily tell the difference between light beers. Beer is generally a pretty boring comfort drink. Unless you go for something specifically flavorful like a nice craft beer or whatever else is strongly flavored all over it's not going to be amazing unless you really like said ordinary beer.
>>
>>7077795
No you're just new to beer and don't pick up on subtle flavors as well as others who have been drinking it for awhile.
Just drink whatever tastes good, brah.
>>

Sam Adams really isn't that great. It's always reminded me of beer-flavored soda and just about everything they put out has the exact same body. They have a special place because they were one of the first microbrews to break into the market. Nowadays they can hardly be called a small brewery and honestly they're kind of mediocre at best.
>>
>>7077894
Sam Adams is great compared to Bud Light or Budwieser, but yeah, there are an incredible amount of better things readily available in america

It's a grapefruit IPA. I can easily and distinctively smell the grapefruit but the IPA taste is overwhelming. I think I don't like IPAs. They're too heavy and thick and all the subtle flavors are very underlying.

Anyone recommend a crisper more flavorful type of beer?

Why is IPA considered a "trend"? Or just a dumb fad?

It genuinely does taste great, and are more flavorful than lagers. There's a reason why they took off.
>>
>>7083731
Ales tend to be more flavorful than lagers anon.

Some people don't like the taste of pine resin, or feel like they're drinking flowers.

Others like my self hate their popularity because at times you can go to your favorite brewery and out of 20 beers 10 will be an ipa or variation of one. So for me I just hate seem so fucking many of them. I just want something different.
That is the reason I started to homebrew.

Just picked up some crazy mountain (Colorado) "fir needle" with real pine needle in it. Its kinda of life an esb with pine flavor.
>>
>>7083731
It's a fad because many breweries just try to make their IPA's as hoppy as fucking possible
>>
>>7083755
i'm sorry, i can't hear your lager wet tears over the sound of living in wonderful american IPA paradise.

all trolling aside, hop cultivation is easier here in certain american climates. The prevalence of IPAs might also be less about fads/trend and more that it's easier for a microbrew to get a bunch of hops for brewing.
>>
>>7083809
It's not like breweries just see hops are cheap and decide to put extra in to get an IPA. Europe isn't not producing IPA because they can't afford the hops.

I think that the real reason for the popularity of IPA's is the horrible state of lager in the US. Microbreweries want to distinguish their beers from American adjunct lager and an easy way to do that is by brewing a style as different from it as possible. Also, making a good lager takes more work because any mistakes in brewing are obvious compared to ales.

American microbreweries can also be more adventurous than small breweries throughout Europe because of the respective markets. The breweries in Europe are old and people have expectations of what they are going to get. Most people there just want a well made pilsner. The US microbreweries are not established and a lot of the consumers are hoping to go out and find the newest best beer of the week.
>>
>>7083777
Colorado has some really great breweries, but Crazy Mountain isn't one of them. Every single beer I've had from them had a watery off taste, like the water from canned vegetables. Or canned pine needles in this case.
>>
>>7077795
Sam Adams is OK but isn't that good. It's what you order when you want a beer with dinner and its the only real beer on tap. I like it.

I've tried New Grist and it's okay. I've bought my gf (who has celiac) a bottle of St. Peter's from the UK, but she never ended up trying it. Some beers like Corona fall under the 20ppm limit, but are made from barley so can't be technically called gluten free. Some gluten free beers like Omission are made from barley, but have had the gluten removed through some process. It's up to you if you want to risk it.

This is literally the first beer I ever had when I turned 21 (excepting the Heinekens and Hoegardens I sipped at my parents' parties as an underagedb&, since I hated the taste at the time). Figured it was time to revisit it and see what I think, now that I can handle the intensity.

7/10 tastes like someone poured a barleywine into a bowl of Raisin Bran instead of milk, pretty damn decent.

the liquor store near me lets you build your own sick-packs, so I can get six new flavors without having to devote myself to a full six-pack.

Next is Innis & Gunn "rare" oak-aged pale. I expected to hate this since I'm not a fan of whiskey, or anything oak-aged in general, but it seems to work really well with beer (especially Rodenbach). The bitterness of oak helps to mellow out the malt-heavy sweetness. It didn't blow me away but I could drink this again.
>>
>>7092674
This is the one I had yesterday. The habanero pepper drowns out all the subtlety and complexity of the underlying beer flavors, but that's okay, really. The heat was at a perfect level; it was sharp, but the finish was short, so it wouldn't make you sweat too badly.

I will definitely pick up more of this in the future.

This is my favorite of the bunch so far. It tastes like one of those honey-wheat pretzel sticks you can buy in any cheap supermarket. There's a drying aftertaste, so none of the malts or added flavors feel cloying.

Listbro here. Finally finished it so now I can go back to drinking actual good beers. This is an IPA that the bar collabed with a brewery and made. Very citrus-y and pretty good. Proceeds go to one of the bar employee's kids who has leukemia :(

Also today is my birthday. 27 big ones...

Used to post in these beer threads a lot and the bar I go to has a list of all ~200 of their bottles and drafts. I chronicled my journey and posted pics of all the bottles I was checking off the list. Now that I'm done I get my name on the wall and a personalized mug. Spent a lot of money here but I like it. Haven't really posted much since I finished the list a bit ago.
>>
>>7093577
Oh, cool. My bar has a list like that too, but 80% of it is IPAs so I would get bored fast.

Which ones did you end up really liking, and wouldn't have tried otherwise?
>>
>>7078650
We used to drink it when I was in the Corps, but only because it was cheep. We were angry young alcoholics.

This one's great if you like sours, but don't believe them when they says the sour flavor "suggests rather than announcing." There's nothing subtle about it, even if it's milder than, say, Festina Peche.

I like sours though so of course this is damn fine to me.
>>
>>7093587

Well I wasn't a huge fan of IPAs before but I really like them now after having to drink so many. Also probably never would have ordered any of the Belgian lambic/fruit beers that are actually pretty tasty.

And as the grand finale, a fruit beer.

The many online reviewers aren't kidding when they call this a "blueberry muffin in a glass." What starts as a very bland pale-ale gives way to the most subtle and teasing of fruit flavors I've perhaps ever tasted in a beer. This is nothing like Rubaeus, which overloads one's senses with raspberry.

Overall while I didn't hate any of the beers in this 6-pack, the ones I want to buy again are the Habanero Sculpin, the Jefferson Tavern Ale, and the Telltale Tart.
>>
>>7093614
I have to be in the mood for them desu. Now that it's getting colder, citrus flavors are becoming less complimentary.

Any brands that really stand out in your opinion? I finally got around to trying some Stone IPAs after I saw them in a documentary, and they're a lot better than the Lagunitas beers I typically frequented for my hophead fix.

Well I'm from Michigan and we have a surplus of breweries. Everyone knows founders and bells but Saugatuck has some great offerings, including my favorite, the Neopolitan Milk Stout, which this place has on nitro. So good. Also found I like a lot of beers from Deschutes, namely the Fresh Squeezed IPA.

An American here interested in trying out some "real ale". Any idea what to get?
>>
>>7096296
no beer is designed to taste best near freezing

You really only want this with near flavorless lagers as it depresses the terrible carbonated water flavor that takes over as it warms

But these aren't designed to taste good cold, they are just designed to be as cheap to produce as possible and as a result do not taste particularly good

>>
>>7096322
Pub culture.

I think ts a very British thing to go to the pub and drink pint after pint of beer all night. A lot of middle aged men will drink 6-8 pints whilst socialising, but not want to get wasted and make a fool of themselves, and still get up for work the next day.

>>7096312
What do you have available?
>>
>>7096338

Honestly, I don't know. I was thinking of asking people here for suggestions and then seeing if I could import it online. But perhaps I should do more research first.

>>
>>7096312
wtf are you taking about "real ale."

where do you live?
>>
>>7077264
Welcome to European standards.
>>
>>7096351
I have a bit of experience with real ale. I grew up in a pub, worked in a lot of pubs, managed a few, done a little consulting work for a few, although mostly about food.

Some real ale brands are national. You will find them in pubs and supermarkets up and down the UK. And then there tends to be semi-local breweries, although they are available across the UK, typically stocked in pubs local to where they are made since they dont produce the volume to sell all over the country and it also becomes more expensive due to transportation costs.

So when it comes to suggestions, a lot of people will probably be able to tell you about the larger breweries, and then have ale local to them that others dont know so much about.
>>
>>7096373

Like I said, American. As for "real ale", the definition I've seen is pasteurized UK ale with active yeast, secondary fermentation and no extra carbonation on the tap.

>>7096392

Ah, okay. Thanks very much.

Id also add, the bottled version of a real ale can be quite different to the tap version. Personally I find the tap verson to be much better.

Something to get you started that may be available to you is Fullers London Pride. I normally drink from local breweries if I can, whereas this is available all over. However, its a pretty decent beer

>>
>>7096433
beer is much more expensive in britain than america. There are plenty of great American beers in the 6-8%ABV range that sell for about $8 per six pack of 355ml bottles
>>
>>7096413
If everything is great, nothing is great.
>>
>>7096458
A big reason American makes almost all of the worlds best beer now is how shitty all the macro beer is. When your beer is merely pretty bad like in non-belgium europe, that incentive to create new better things just wasn't as strong as it was in america at the peak of consolidation in the 80s

Do anyone other than Americans say its the best?

I've not been hunting for it that hard, but I do keep a look out, and I hardly see any American craft beer in the UK which is a shame. Craft beer is starting to take off here, and I would have thought it would be more common to find American beer by now. Perhaps im not searching hard enough though. I guess im not missing out too much since I dont like really like IPA, but I do enjoy porter/stout and some of the American versions look great.
>>
>>7096590
>Do anyone other than Americans say its the best?
Yes, pretty much everyone who has tried a lot of the best beer around europe and america does regardless of the person's country of origin

Most of america's best brewers do not export though, so a lot of europeans have only been exposed to the multinational companies selling fake american beer like Budweiser (actually sold by a belgian company)

When I was in London back in the spring, I saw some american brews popping up, but I tried to drink just local stuff so I wasn't paying much attention to which american ones were available. I know I saw Founders there, definitely check out their Breakfast Stout if you see it
