>I never understand why people equate price to quality.
There isn't a strong correlation between deliciousness and price. Many delicious things are cheap, and some are very expensive. The middle ground varies wildly.
But price is generally about assuring comfort level. Rich people go to expensive places because they're comfortable with deferential service, food that looks a certain way and (most importantly) dining with their own kind, since the price is usually enough to keep the poor and middle class out. They don't worry about how the food is sourced because they take it for granted the chef is getting the best available.
The poor will flock to places that offer cheap deliciousness (usually in large portions, because getting their money's worth is important to people who don't have that much). The food will be lacking in vegetables and made from the cheapest possible ingredients, but it will often be as delicious as what rich people eat - just much less healthy. This is why when you look at the people eating at places popular with the poor you see a lot of fatties.
It's the middle class places where things get fucked up. Because the middle class has other priorities than deliciousness. They look at what the poor eat and want something "healthier". They want vegetarian and gluten-free options. They want to feel like they're in the know, so they go to places that serve food that's in line with current food trends as they understand them. They're impressed by locally sourced and organic ingredients. They also want "healthy" options, because they're terrified of getting fat (or fatter). And most of all they want to eat at a place where the prices are just high enough to keep out the poor, so they can feel rich for an evening. This is why most middle class restaurants are a waste of money.

What other foods/drinks are much cheaper when you make them yourself?
Also what are some cultured foods I can make? I made yoghurt once as a kid and just made a stinky mess of it.
You don't need a culture but sauerkraut is the bomb.

I would like to study a 1 year specialist chef degree, I have no formal training but I like cooking, I'm not Soma from Food Wars, just a regular guy.
Would you recommend taking a course like this?
You can get an Associates degree in cheese making to become a Master Cheese Maker. You'll land a cool job in the dairy country making way more than any restaurant gig.
I don't know OP, can you make a three cheese pizza blend?
>>7313293
1 year ? How can studies be so short ? Don't you rather mean cooking course ? Also 3 years is a minimum if you wanna learn cooking and you'll still have to work in a restaurant like a motherfucker with the chief screaming at you and beating the shit out of everyone.

I already have the seasoning, but I'm looking to see if you /ck/ucks have any tips to make taco meat even better.
Also, I'm doing trailer park tacos (ground beef)
What do, /ck/?
Diced onions?
Small cubed potatoes?
>>7313179
>>ground beef
ground beef is fucking expensive as shit and its the worst taco meat. why don't you just buy some pork shoulder and braize it for 4 hours? shit's litterally 2~ dollars a lb even in very developed and high cost of living parts of america.
>>7313193
I won't touch pork after a couple days becuase I don't feel like getting botulism.
A pound of cooked ground beef taco meat will last me 4 days, costs $2.79 and is much safer
>inb4 poorfag because you are 100% correct
>>7313204
What makes you think cooked pork grows botulism? You are annihilating any bacteria, fungus or parasite present during a 4 hour braise.
Unless you don't have a fridge because you're poor...
Hi everyone
I was recently in the UK and found a shop called Thorntons. Seems quite popular all over the UK.
They had something called Liquorice Special Toffee. Its completely and utterly amazing. Never tasted anything so good in my life.
Anyway any can find a recipe for this as i live in NZ and they have nothing like this sort of stuff here. Appreciate any help
Also whats your favourite sweet food? know of anything better than this?
Fuck off, King Thornton ii.
Liquorice is made specifically from liquorice root which can be difficult to find. Lucky for you, you can buy this straight off their site.
