Reposting my question;

I want to start making something out of worbla. I thought you just made the thing out of worbla and you're done (plus sanding and painting etc. ofcourse) but now I keep seeing people using two layers of worbla with foam between, which would triple the costs.
Is this really necessary? Or only with some parts? Could someone please explain?
>>
>>8993731
It depends on what you're making and if you're willing to line the back with something else or not.

I usually use the double method for things that you more likely or not will see the back of, like belts, and other things that "stick off" of the body.

You can just fold over the edges (think of how people who sew cut slits into fabric to make harsh shapes easier) for things like armor for the most part though. Line the inside with something black (usually) like foam, or a comfortable fabric. People double up their worbla to make the piece look "finished", but you can do the same with lining. The only downside would be it might be harder for you to attach straps, so make sure the fold over covers wherever straps would go, if you're making something that requires them.

An Anon was asking in a previous thread about waterproof body paint for pic related. I said I ordered a black "henna" marker (not actually henna, but FDA approved alcohol based body paint as an alternative to toxic coloured henna) and was waiting for it to arrive to try it.

I just got it in the mail. It works perfectly. It's a tiny bit drippy (nothing too bad, it collects slowly) and the ink does get on the inside of the cap so I recommend wearing gloves when using it and making sure it doesn't drip on anything, but it's very dark and stays on even when touched or wet. (also using a stencil would probably help)

Here it is in action:
http://i.imgur.com/2DxnSoS.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/4z6YZKo.jpg

First pic is obviously running water on it to show it's waterproof, second is after getting it wet and rubbing a towel on it enough to make my skin pink and it was still on. I'm not sure if it'll fade or bleed in heavily chlorinated water.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181801186960
The black ones are currently out of stock, but the seller is really nice and if you message her she'll usually update stock or let you know when she'll have more.

I haven't tried the other colours yet (I wish there were more), but it's probably a good cheap (albeit not perfect) alternative to bodypaint for small-medium solid-shade tattoos that aren't too intricately detailed.

(sorry for the shill, but I'm hoping that Anon is still around and this might be useful to others anyway)

I'm cosplaying Hanayo soon, with the sunny day outfit, but the thing is I don't know how the hell am I going to do the tights. What do you recommend? I'll let you know though; I can't order them online or custom made, I'm talking about doing it myself somehow.

>>8993801
Make your own tights with knit fabric and look up knit applique for the diamonds. You'll have a seam but you can put it in the back. Sew them to flesh colored tights to help them stay up

I'm looking to cut the hands and head off a morphsuit to attach a hood. How would I go about cutting it, and what material would I be looking for to stitch on?
>>
>>8993933
Whatever material you use must have stretch, so aside from that it depends on what you're making. Also, the thread doesn't matter as much as the stitch you use. You gotta use a stretch stitch as well.

Thanks! Yeah, the mask looks kind of purple-ish in the picture for some reason. I'll admit the mask itself is a bit rough, I made it about 2 years ago out of plaster gauze just for fun, and I've been wanting to give it another shot by sculpting with clay and making a mold for fiberglass, but I won't have the time to work on it and go through the whole learning process for molding stuff.

>>8994322
I was actually thinking about doing that, but I made them out of mdf, so I'm worried the tape will bunch up from slight flexibility of the wood.

I'm cosplaying Genos from OPM, I have gloves and a skintight undershirt but can't really think of a way to fasten my armor pieces to them. Any suggestions?
>>
>>8994068
The thing is I designed the mask separately so that
A. It can fit over my glasses
B. I wanted to design it like a luchador mask>

Because of that, I can't use the whole thing as one solid base. That's an extra layer over my face and I want to avoid the "puffiness" of having the head tucked into the rest.
>>
>>8994604
Velcro is your friend for stuff like that. Just put patches on your shirt--while you're wearing it--and then match em' to your armor as you need to.

If you wanna paint them on, you gotta use fsbric paint and make sure the fabric paint you're using works for the material your garment is made of.

That's the problem, i don't have any pictures, i only had the fabric myself when i was eyeing it up in the store. But (if my memory serves me right) it wasn't super stretchy and i think it stretched more horizontally (i'm not even sure that makes sense)

Not sure if this is a good enough pic. My Nagisa costume from Madoka came in, the hat ended up being the same color as the skirt (which is wrong it should be darker).

I have no experience with dying, sewing, or anything that takes talent.

My questions are if I left it as is how noticeable would it be that the hat is "off".

Also if I do decide to dye it, how would i go about doing it. It's kinda a meh material, and the last thing I'd want is to ruin it since I have a con in a month?

>>
>>8995532
Build it over a hard hat. You can buy them cheaply at home improvement stores, they're a sturdy armature, and they adjust to fit your head size circumferentially rather than with chin-straps, so they're more comfortable when moving.
>>
>>8995470
During an average day, that's probably true. But in costume, at a con, during warmer weather, sweat and humidity will make it look greasy and gross. the reason Driver looks okay in the movie is that he has an entire team of hair and makeup people constantly touching everything up.
Natural hair in con conditions will go flat and oily after a few hours. Wigs don't.
>>
>>8995544
As the person who posted the question originally I should point out this con is happening in the middle of winter in australia so I think if I use my natural hair when I have the helmet off that I should be fine.

Plan on making the base of midriff/torso piece off of my own body, but not sure how I should go about that.I could do the method of creating a duct tape body pattern and then trace it to eva foam, but it'll most likely lose the proper shape that way.

Two questions.
I need to make red tattoos for Jibril - No Game No Life, and then black face marks for Asriel - Undertale.
What product is recommended for either of these?
I've seen Jirils sold as temporary tattoos so i could do that for about 15$ but its one use only. Then there's the printable temporary tattoo paper which I'm unsure of how it works or if it can be red. And then there's body paint which I have no clue about.
>>
>>8998337
In regards to the printable tattoo paper, if you have a colour printer you can make it whatever colour you want. It's literally just printing something on paper, which happens to have an extra layer that you can stick to your skin. It might take some practising to apply it right, though, so I'd order more than you need, and do some test runs (to figure out sizing and application). The designs you're talking about seem easy enough to print.

Temp tattoos aren't a bad idea, like the other anon pointed out. As far as Asriel, just use a good brand of face paint like Mehron or Ben Nye. Make sure you get a good setting powder so you don't end up a streaky mess rubbing off on everything. You can use setting spray, but after application if any gets near your eyes it'll sting like crazy for a second or two.
Also get a good makeup remover. If this is for a con, don't be like all the home stuck shit heads and dye the hotel's white towels blue.

>>8998156
>>8997228
Absolutely. I think mash-ups are 8/10 really bad, but I'm more committed to the idea that if you can handle the heat, do whatever the fuck you want. Mash-ups aren't actually hurting anyone.
>>
>>8998749

>>

>>8998971

Thermo plastic thread is gone so I'll post here hoping some of those anons are in this:

What do you use to heat up just small areas of the plastic? Like that little bump you want to smooth or indent. I have the hardest time smoothing this stuff out without making it worse somewhere else. I use the heat gun, it heats up bigger area and other parts are losing shape. Is there some kind of focused heating tool that isnt the size of a hair dryer that you use?
>>8998103
depends on what it is really. For shit I want to cover because of time restraints? Well, a battle worn stuff, might just have a makeshift bandage out of muslin. could use that to wrap it, tighter then usual. If its nice, pristine magical girl armor or somthing, adding sleeves isnt that tough, though stretchable fabrics can be a pain to sew the first time.
>>
>>8999033
I'm not sure if it'll work for you but what i do is heat up a metal sculpting tool with the heat gun and use the heat from there to add details/smooth surfaces. It's super time-consuming though. I hope this helps!
>>
>>8999033
What kind of thermoplastic are you using?

Towards the end of the year, I am planning on cosplaying a male anime character for the first time. The thing is, I'm not sure if I have the right face for it, and I don't want to be laughed at if I'm ugly.

What kind of facial characteristics are desirable when cosplaying as a male anime character?
>>
>>8999185

Are you male or female? If you're male you have nothing to worry about, and if you're female nobody will say anything to you even if you look like a frog.
>>
>>8999191
I'm male but I don't know if I am fem enough or Asian looking enough to cosplay as an anime character.

I have relatively feminine features but a strong nose.

I'm looking for RHS and I've been trying to track down how to purchase from Montreal or double decker. Are they both out of business? Did they rebrand?

I made one of those monitor heads a while ago and I'm looking to sell it. I'm not sure about a price though. It's been worn 2 or 3 times but is in good condition. If you anons were in the market for one, what would you pay for it?
>>
>>8999033
For very small areas, I sometimes use a soldering iron and kinda hover over the area a bit, depends case-by-case though.

Since when to japs in anime ever look like japs? Or asian at all without it distinctly being realistic like Tokyo Godfathers? In fact many are based off of Caucasian features.

Your face doesn't matter as long as you take care to not look like trash. Foundation and make up tricks are your friend.

I need to make a full fabric mask (like a ski mask) covering everything but my eyes. It seems like most masks are spandex, but it seems too shiny for the look I'm going for. Anyone have suggestions for fabric that's breathable and not too hot? I don't really want to just stuff my face in everything at the fabric store.

I have this wig that I've never used, it's in pic and it's similar in style and color, a bright blue. Since I have no use for it, would it be possible if I could dye it to a brown shade, like in the pic?
If that could work, would anyone recommend methods of doing so?
I don't plan on buying wigs in the future anymore, but I realized that using this one wig could be used for something for a convention.

Flexdesigns are the best musclesuits, but they are expensive. You can add foam muscles to a compression shirt, though it will take some trial and error. Check out the RPF for several threads on how to do that.
One thing I would like to note though, is that aside from toys and the 90s cartoon, Spidey has never been especially buff. He is lanky and wiry. He has some tone, but don't feel you have to go for a Captain America-like build when doing Spider-Man.

Depends on your budget, but plenty of stores have cute blouses you can wear with black pants if you want a simple outfit. Check h&m, the express, banana republic and department stores like dillards and macy's for cute blouses and simple pants. I hope you do well anon!

>>9000191
Its entirely up to you, you can get yourself some simple black flats if you want, or go for some low high heels if you want, but flats are probably the more reasonable choice, you can easily get yourself some nice ones from dillards or Macy's if you want, so you can have some that'll last you a bit
>>
>>8999220
When it comes to anything you make you have to know material cost (how much all the tangible stuff, glue, monitor, etc, cost you) and labor cost (how much an hour of your time is worth. That dollar amount multiplied by the number of hours worked on the project). You take the sum of that number and if you sell at that price you break even. Add a 10-20% markup and you've got yourself a selling price.

Naturally, just because you thought about the project for 100 hours, doesn't mean you did 100 hours of work. Use common sense, but don't sell yourself short.
>>
>>8999368
Unless you use some kind of mesh, full face masks aren't super breathable. They're going to get hot after a while. That being said, you can use any fabric that has even a little bit of stretch. I've had luck just using an old cotton t-shirt and sewing it into a rounded off tube.

>>8999757
Buy a headband, remove the metal piece, reattach to a piece of fabric of the correct length. It's not rocket surgery.

I don't know what I do is orthodox, but what has worked for me is that I sew the armholes for the shell and lining together right sides together on one side first, clip, and press. Then I rip out the stitching, do the same thing again for the other armhole, but this time I don't rip out the stitching. Instead that one is turned to have wrong sides together, and I re-sew the shell and lining together with a ladder stitch at the other armhole (that was seam-ripped). The hem of the rest of the jacket can be finished with bias tape without any more turning things right side/wrong side-out.

How can I smooth out this masking tape arm? The bigger dips will be filled out once I stuff it with polyfill, but I need something to cover the texture of the tape. I'm ultimately going to be covering these with armsocks made of tights, which will smooth it out a little, but I need something else underneath.

Preferably something lightweight, since I'm wearing a total of 4 prosthetic arms over a metal armature on my back, and I'm weak as shit.

Today I tried spray-on plasti dip but it seemed way too thin to do much without 100 coats. Some other materials I considered-
>flex seal
>dip plasti dip brushed on
>gesso
>paper clay
>paper mache

But I've never worked much with most of these so I have no idea what's most feasible. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Belts were advertised as pure white but are clearly a very yellowy cream

I need to get these white ASAP as I need them for 2 weeks time

Please help I'm not sure where to start
>>
>>9001239
Depending what type of fabric it is, you could try bleaching. Now, I personally don't know what fabrics you can or cannot bleach, a quick Google already says to avoid wool, silk, mohair, leather, and spandex. Look if your fabric is bleachable, then try that.
Aside from that, either make your own bows or buy new ones. Things can still reach you in 2 weeks time.
>>
>>9001246
It says it's made from PU, weaving and satin

I have no idea how bleach able that is
>>
>>9001248
>PU (polyurethane) weaving
I assume since you said "belts" there's a leather-like belt part? That's what this refers to.
>satin
If the satin contains polyester, you can't bleach it. I am also going to assume since it says PU that there'll be polyester in the satin. The bleach will probably melt this. Dyeing it is also going to be highly unprobable to work. Cut your losses and buy/make new ones.
>>
>>8995585
If your fabric is polyester, I recommend a heat knife to cut in holes and ragged edges. The heat will cause the material to melt and give you a finished edge so you dont have to worry about fraying. If it's cotton or some material that isnt synthetic I'd agree with >>8995631
and take your time with some sandpaper.

>>9001239
If you have a fabric store near you I'd honestly say just remake them yourself. No guarantee that they'll whiten up or just get destroyed with bleach. There's lots of bow making tutorials, and you could reuse the stuffing from the cream bows you have.

>>9000987
Paper mache i'd say, sand it like crazy, and then go at it with plastidip

I'm going to BABYMETAL's show in L.A. in July & I was thinking about dressing up in their Megitsune outfits (pic & video related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK3NMZAUKGw), but I don't have the main kimono part (I can get the shoes, the blouse & the tutu on my own). So, these are my questions:

>How would one go about making the kimono part?
From what I can tell, it's more or less, a regular kimono just with the lower half of the front (below the obi) cut off so that the tutu can show. Would I just find a regular kimono/yukata sewing tutorial online & follow that, then slice off the appropriate part?

>If I can't make it on my own, is two & a half months enough time to get it commissioned?
I understand that these sort of things can't be rushed, so that why I'm asking now rather than later.

I have friends who have a lot more cosplay experience than I do, so I think I might be able to pay one of them to style it or find someone to commission to do it. However, I'm not sure what kind of wig I would need to purchase or how wig commissions generally work.

If you're a smaller guy, Edward Elric might be fun, there is a part where his prosthetic is busted to crap, so you could make the shoulder part with EVA foam with the wires hanging out and everything, that would be cool.
Shanks from One Piece
Future Gohan
Yamamoto from Bleach is a fucking BAMF.
Jet from Cowboy Bebop which you could make or modify a prosthetic for. If you go that route, you have a bunch more options.
Genos from One Punch Man, other androids.
Naruto, Sauske, Zabuza (in his death scene), Boruto (Naruto's son)
Groot
Bunch of characters in the Star Wars verse
Agent Coulson from the TV adaptation Agent's of Shield
Movie version of Thor
Deadpool
....
I really could continue, but does this give you a starting point at least?

You get a shoulder-length or slightly short wig and a matching clip-on bun/ponytail. Minimum styling and maintenance required for this cosplay. It's super simple.

>they're pretty heavy
Try to alter something like pic related perhaps? They're made to slip over your ears and go behind your head.

>>9002368
Ouch, sorry to hear. The obvious choice would be Ash from Evil Dead? I think that's his right arm. Army surplus guy from the Simpsons also comes to mind.

Btw, you would probably know, what is an arm worth in sexual favors?
A lifetime supply of handies and blowey Joeys?

you're welcome anon

Thank anon. Finished the jacket part, now messing with collar and sleeves.

You gotta do Allen Walker.
>>
>>9001659
Yeah but if that's for guys, aka flat chest, than that's the size it'll be, and it will just sit on top of my boobs and not bind anything
>>
>>9002714
It's not for guys, read the reviews. Plenty of tit-having transmen and women could figure it out by measuring.
>>
>>9000583

With this design, you can simply finish the armholes, add the collar, then finish the open raw edges of the fashion fabric and lining with bias tape.
>>
>>9002714
.... why would a guy wear a binder?
>>
>>9002780
Also a great idea! Thank you!
>>
>>9002759
>>9002807
Okay, I'm just a bit worried about getting the wrong size haha
Also
"effective in full binding and for sporting related binding and protection"
So I was kinda thinking guys would wear it maybe agains manboobs or when sporting? Not exactly sure what I was thinking desu
Again, just a bit worried it wont fit, sorry for the stupid questions haha

Since I don't really have the tools or space to make a particular cosplay weapon, where would you guys recommend commissioning it from? I'm sure that there are sites for this sort of thing, but I don't know what they would be. Cosplay.com's commission contact list looks like it hasn't been update in years.

I just found these boots at the thrift store today to use for Sailor Moon, they're made out of pleather and I wanted to get some personal recommendations on what type of paint to use.

Vinyl. As in as in the stuff you make boot covers with. Make boot covers. You'll never get that clean anime look with paint, especially over creased pleather.
>>
>>9002368
How did that situation even happen
>>
>>9002368
Make a cheapie prosthetic, you can be Venom Snake
>>
>>9002061
If the base wig isn't too expensive then buy another of the same kind and take it apart for its wefts.

That is if you have time.

>>9002087
Liquid eyeliner, wet n wilds water proof is good for what it is, if you don't want to spend a fortune, also wolfe fx is super black.

I'm making Nina/Eponine from Fire Emblem Fates but I'm not sure how to make the boots flare out like and what would be the best kind of fabric for her headband?
I'm making my own cosplay for the first time so I have no idea if her design would be confusing/hard for a beginner.

Looking for circle lense I can trust. Where else other than pinky paradise? They don't have any that are fitting my particular requirements.

I'm looking at lenscircle and there's one that almost fits the bill except the diameter is 14.2mm while my prescription is 14.0mm. How much does a .2mm larger difference matter?

What material would one make this out of? Foam?

Honey color has lenses too, and personally I think they're better than PP
Not sure if they have what you need but you could check them out
>>9003879
Easiest would probably be to have some sort of base and cover it with foam yes

I want to cosplay this galactic bae but I'm not very good with wigs. How long would my base wig have to be to make this curl? I have short straight hair so I have no idea what size of curler this needs or what the base should be in length.

Also, since she has that satellite on her forehead I should be able to get away with an ordinary wig, not a lace front, right?

I made my foam sword, added Bondo... and the outside is still rough, no matter how much I sand it.
>>
>>9004025

When you're working with Bondo and you think you've sanded enough, you need to sand some more.

Then add another layer of Bondo.

Then sand some more.

Repeat ad infinitum.

I'm thinking that those boots taper from her mid thigh-ish to her feet, are really wide at the top, then are folded. I drew up a really well drawn and detailed cross section of what I'm talking about. The fold labeled "3" would be hidden.

As far as the headband, I can't really tell what that's made of. If it's a non-fabric material, foam glued onto a headband. If it's fabric, use the same material as you used for the dress and either paint or sew/embroider on the detail.

>>9003879
Absolutely. Use pink insulation foam, otherwise known as extruded polystyrene. This will be a breeze since the only bevel is a very small one right on the edge. Just sand that bevel in, seal the whole thing, paint it.
>>
>>9004025
What grit is your sand paper?
If your sword is bumpy get a lower grit sandpaper to really take material off. Once everything is level, that's when you use progressively higher grits to make it smooth.
If the bondo is flat/level, but feels rough (think concrete which is flat, but has a rough texture) you need higher grit paper to smooth it out.

For bondo, I start with 120 or 220, sometimes as low as 80 if I did a really shitty job, then work my way up to 800-1000 grit and wet sand.

I don't have any experience cosplaying or making stuff, but I'd like to do a yanki outfit like this. Any idea how difficult/expensive it would be? Also, any recommendations for fabric?

Also I need to make regent/pompadour hair with a black wig. Tons of hairspray or model the hair around a metal frame or something?

Just keep at it.

Start applying Bondo with your hands. (Wearing gloves ofc!)
>>
>>9003946
Why not just buy a pre culed/ wavy wig like that and save the trouble. Lace fronts often look better but the satellite hides a good chunk. So long as the wig doesn't fold up a normal one would be fine.

Quick question, if I dye something in salt water will it set it right off the bat, or will I have to soak it in salt water again?

In more detail of the situation I dyed a synthetic skin suit which did not take to dye well and the color was rubbing off easily. I want to set the dye but I'm worried that soaking it in pure salt water will remove the color, so I want to soak it in salt water to set mixed with some dye water so the color won't fade any more. I don't want to use vinegar because I don't want to walk around a con smelling like vinegar.

Made some EVA foam armor.Paint job has done some cracking/folding,nothing i cant fix right now,but my question is how much will a spray of clear coat on it help it?As far as making everything more solid so it doesnt flex as much and keep the paint from doing any cracking?
>>
>>9005137
you need to gesso and then plasti-dip that bitch
no, clearcoat will not help, it has no structural integrity
>>
I'm thinking about making McCree and I just realized that I'm not quite sure how to make his neck cape thingy. The actual construction, painting, etc are no problem, but it's the overall shape of the piece that has me wondering.

Do you guys think it's a big square folded in half, a big rectangle, or a big triangle?
