First step is to talk to people. It's the most difficult one but nothing ventured nothing gained. Best thing to do is work on everything you can change for the better self improvement attracts people to you because you become more confident. Find different ways to socialize be social with random people in your daily life, go to the gym, listen to some comedy always helped me not to steal jokes but to learn delivery and timing for things. The best part of all this is that when you start doing it, it becomes more fun to keep doing and you stay in a positive circle.

That's good that you could do what you want, but going as a group/scheduling stuff shouldn't shackle you down. I was with my buddies but we constantly con cut off in the Dealer's room but I just went I did my own thing and just met up after. I only went to 1/5 of my planned panels.
Making conversation isn't too bad, just look for people relevant to your interests. I became buddies with a fellow Asian armour bro and buff Asian barbarian Frostmourne guy.

I usually walk around with friends, and then go on my own to shop, but this year, my mobile service was WIND, which does not work at AN at all. so I had to be with friends the whole time, or risk not seeing them for the whole day. I personally think it's better to just go in with no plans and see what comes at you. Going in groups is best as you'll always have to people to hang with, even if you get lost. I got cut off from my group but ended up posing for a bunch of pics outside and had a good time, and met some cool people. Pic very related.

I think after having the same experience at almost every Canadian con I've visited for the past however many years, it's a quick scan or two through the dealers room and then off to do whatever else. There's rarely anything good in the dealer's room but then again, there's nothing to do anywhere else either.

If you know the series: talk about the series
If you don't know the series: ask what it's about
If you cosplay yourself / like details: ask them how they made certain parts or what materials they used
If you don't cosplay / would get lost on the details: ask them how long it took
Then go from there. You can talk to people about their geeky tshirts, phone charms, their DS / game they are playing. If you're in line with someone you can talk to them about the event you are waiting for or just ask how their con is going.
Then just be aware of body language. I they are really not enjoying the conversation, let them leave or excuse yourself.
