Don't have any really great photos of it immediately accessible, but I'm super proud of having made Aguri's bow from Garo: Yami wo Terasu Mono. Six feet tall, a two-foot-long blade mounted on the front of each end, and a half dozen three-foot arrows to go with it. All while having to work off references from a show shot primarily in the dark.

I need to make Kanshou and Bakuya within a week from styrofoam. Can you give me the measurements to your sword? Width and length of both blade and handle.

This is a shit photo of me, but I'm so proud of my Kecha Whappa. It was my first prop and over all I like to think I made few mistakes. The big one being that I made it out of wood so it was super heavy... Oh well, love and learn!

Probably one of the better shots of the front of the bow. It also has my friend who did Takeru! We had a group at Fanime a couple years ago.

Didn't want to start a new thread but it feels relevant so I'll ask here. So I'm using led strips for the first time. I understand that for all 300 lights, I would need 12v of power. If I were to use half the length of the strip, or 150 lights, would I only need 6v?

The paint job on this is gorgeous.
>>

Hey anon, just get a bigger battery, that way you don't have to worry about it at all. A23 are super small, cheap, and 12V, so you can use them and not have to deal with a shit ton of AAs or whatever.

First step was to print out a template based on the official game artwork. This is traced onto sheets of 3mm sintra.

3mm sintra is stacked and glue together in several layers with a channel cut in the core layers for a steel bar reinforcement. There are more layers at the hilt and a single thin ridge of sintra through the center of the blade. Bondo is filled in tapered to that ridge which makes the blade edge.

The blades on the left are some old ones I made years ago from paper mache and styrofoam.

The blades have now been built up with bondo. You can now use a rotary tool or dremel to start shading and rounding the handles.
>>
>>9019320
Once the handles have been shaped you can move on to paint.

masking the black bladeis time consuming because of the hex pattern. Make a template for the shape and place masking tape on a clean sheet of glass. Copy the shape numerous times and apply the hex pattern this way to ensure uniformity.

Clear coat with a few layers of pearl coat and you have your finished swords. This took about 2 weeks or so between various other projects.
>>
>>9019232
I read that A23 don't provide enough amps (watts?) to make the leds bright enough. Did I misread? Also the reason for the half of the lights is because it's a size issue. I'm filling a sword with them, and I don't think the full 6 meters of strip will fit, that's why I wanted to use half.
>>
>>9019365
I used A23s to power 2.5-3 ft of LEDs and they were plenty bright. But if you've done your research and you think that won't be enough, go bigger.
>>
>>9019575
That's with an A23? Damn that's plenty bright. . I'll give that a try then. Thanks for the help anon!
>>
What's a hard prop to make, I need a testing challenge
>>
>>9019575
Damn, what material did you use for that? I've been wanting to do Illyana for ages but I've never found a material that would allow light through when painted white.
>>
>>9020243
It was 1/16 white acrylic from TAP Plastics. (I am lucky enough to live in northern California and have a TAP Plastic just around the corner from my house, so I told them what I wanted to do and they pointed me in the right direction.) The plastic itself was white, but the LEDs were bright enough to show through. As you can see, the plastic didn't diffuse the light very well, but the effect was pretty cool anyway.
>>
>>9017707
Temjin, different anon here but I know you make a lot of props, do you have any tips for making dagger props out of wood?
I', new to props but I was working on making Kanshou/Bakuya last year but out of MDF and the painting process messed up because of MDF+the paints+shitty masking.
I want to try a wood for my next quick project but I'm not sure what kind to use?
Which kind would be best to avoid ugly wood grain?
>>
>>9020322
I don't work with wood so I am not the best person to ask sorry :/

MDF is a cheap and easy go to, but be warned if you sand it the dust is toxic since its chemically treated wood.

Im beating a dead horse but I cant recommend sintra enough for small builds like swords and guns. Its easy to work with hand tools like razor blades and sanding blocks where as wood often requires more heavy duty tools if you want a certain level of cleanliness. You can also bond it quickly with most CA glues.

If you want you can order it online at foamboardsource.com

Thanks for the tips!

I have an electric sander and an electric jigsaw from when I was working with MDF.
Pic related my blades (first real props!) before the paint job got botched.

I would use MDF again but I don't have time for another painting debacle since the con I'm shooting for is very close and I'm fairly short on time (as well as bitter). I have some Sintra laying around but I don't know if the thickness would work well for what I want to make (even layered) and I don't have time to acquire anymore, unfortunately.

I also want to add that your Fate props are super inspiring! I wish I'd seen your new swords before I started mine, I probably would have tried to give mine more depth too, it looks great!

I have an electric sander and a scroll-saw as well, though I didn't have any of it at the time I made archers swords. The sander is a godsend, really speeds things up.

If you don't mind my asking what exactly went wrong paint wise? Those base swords look very good.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm kinda going through some disillusionment with my work and the hobby in general lately. Fate pun intended.

Thank you, couldn't agree more. For years I've done nothing but hearld the joy that is Foam PVC and Sintra.

That said you could work on your paintjob a little. Laying paints give the hues definition and complexity, a layer of dark blue - light blue makes the handles feel more solid and gives the colors depth.

Dark times, bro.

If you really want it. I could make a 3D model of it for you. Broken or normal?

Figured you guys would know better than anyone:

I am currently getting the Greatsword of Artorias made on commission, because I don't have the skills, tools, or space to make my own. Their price is reasonable, but it looks like I have two options: EVA foam, or fiberglass. The fiberglass version costs about $250 more because they have to make the mold for it.

How worth it is it to upgrade to fiberglass? I don't have a lot of experience with cosplay props, so its hard for me to tell the difference without seeing them with my own eyes.

The sword is 4.5 feet long, if that impacts anything.

Picture related, but not the same place I am ordering mine from (unfortunately).

Still a WIP for Kaleidomoon Scope but I'm pretty pleased so far! Once the other wings are cut out and glued together, I'm gonna fill in the gaps with wood filler and sand it before using Plasti-Dip and some spray paint. Gonna do the same for the crown part and tip plus hand paint the rod part pink.
>>
>>9021597
If they are making a mold and fiberglassing a sword of that size, assuming they do good work $250 is a very good price

I did opal's bow last year, which I'm pretty happy with, though I'd like to go back and re-do the rainbow colored spirals later and actually tape up my handle. It was tons of fun (especially to paint) and I have interest in doing other SU props but just haven't had the time yet.

I used blue Styrofoam and bondo, and plexiglass for the arrow. The handle is hard wood that's embedded into the foam and unscrews in the middle for travel. It is one heavy beast though, and the weight from the curve puts a lot of pressure on the handle/thin part of the bow.

Are these props too tough for a beginner project?
>>

Too tough? no. A lot of work and probably pretty expensive given that you'll be learning as you go? yes.
>>
>>9037314
I'm a NEET so I have plenty of time on my hands. Money might be an issue though but gotta break some eggs before you can make an omelette. Thanks mate.

Is Bondo the same thing as car body filler or repair paste or something like that? They apparently don't sell the original in my country so I'm trying to find a good local replacement.
>>
>>9037389
bondo is regular ass car body filler, and not even a very good one at that.

Not the same anon but that sucks to hear. You are like the zyzz of this board.

I prefer wood filler to Bondo. It's very slightly less durable, but it's a lot less toxic, goes on easy, and is a dream to sand compared to bondo.
>>
>>9037791
Wood filler is litterly wood chips and saw dust mixed into wood glue until a peanut butter consistancy
>>
>>9037791

I assume you mean expensive, in which case I got a quart for $10 USD which is enough for 4-5 projects...are you sure you're looking at wood filler and not wood putty? They're not the same thing.

How the fuck would you go about doing the peg leg though? I'm thinking maybe sound like completely black from the knee down, and just hold your leg up and stick a prop under the knee for photos or something, but it feels really complex and annoying
>>
>>9039012

It's wood filler, but I think the price has to do with where I live (not the USA); Certain home improvement stuff is just really expansive here for some reason.

So a friendly anon from the suggestion that has convinced me to try out a Lucio cosplay. I've got a decent understanding of electronics so I can make a gun that lights up and makes noise without much issue but the hard part comes in making the case for the gun itself. I figure the speaker I'd toss in it would weight about two pounds so I'd need a material that could support it without snapping in half. Any thoughts?

Could probably construct something sturdy enough out of plasticard without too much trouble. Not sure about Sintra, although I'd expect it to be similar. Just use lots of supports

Paper to hold up two pounds of electronics?
Gun pictures for reference. Most likely the memory of the weight would be to the front with a few simple buttons to the handle. It would be much lighter without the electronics but go big or go home right?
>>
>>9046204
I probably wouldn't go with paper. I think securely glued plastic is the way to go.
>>

Hm. Well for the chest, I was actually thinking of making one for a female friend of mine by using wire frames and foam and building a male torso on top of her own and forming it down to fit her stomach.

I don't know how well that is going to work out, but you are more than welcome to experiment with that idea.

As for the leg, maybe attach a separate piece with a pole and the lower compartments to your knee and when people want a photo you lift up your leg.
