I've started book marking molds on stay and aliexpress.
I also tried my first resin piece last night, and I messed up. I didn't modge podge the paper enough, so the resin got through and left wet spots. I'll just chock it up to first time mistakes and make sure I do more layers of modge podge on the next one.

It could be a number of things. I've had problems with pieces that have a lot of angles/pointy corners and also with one brand of resin that was a bit runnier than others I've had and took a lot longer to set

I have this problem with doming, usually it means I put to much resin on and did not let it thicken up enough first. Or it was a bit at an angle and I did not notice.

I wish I didn't have such a shitty camera. But I'm currently trying out my first "mold" pieces. These are actually in some cheap plastic packaging. So if I have to destroy the packaging, it's no big deal. If the resin breaks, then it's a lesson learned.

They're actually stickers! They're from Lemon Co. I got a couple sheets of them at a Tokyo Japan Lifestyle shop in a mall. Shopkawaii.com sells the brand, but not the particular sheets I bought. I like them since they're so cute and a small size. Each sheet has a ton of them, and resin didn't seem to bother the color on them at all.

Posting some progress of stuff I've been working on. Still struggling with the bubbles but I know they are from when I'm doming the pieces from being too impatient. Preferring using the UV resin but I am finding that the pieces are curving despite how thin the layers are. I have tried using normal resin to try and get the cloudy effect but you really have to babysit it. Any suggestions on clear cast resin that doesn't take so long to cure?
I have a question. Can amazing clear cast be put in the oven? I don't mean to try to set the resin faster. But I mean after it's finished hardening. There are tutorials for doing a combo of polymer clay figures and using resin to make a pool/ocean/aquarium affect and you need to bake some parts of it after your resin has already hardened. The tutorials I watch usually use EnviroTex lite. So I'm not sure if amazing clear cast will act the same in the oven as EnviroTex lite.

Yes, it works better if the frame's quite deep. If it's not the resin will go everywhere unless you're extremely slow and careful. It cures fine.

This video may give you an idea of how to do things. I also use a popsicle stick to help drip the resin in, instead of pouring it from the cup itself. It's easy to get the hang of and pretty fun to drop all sorts of stuff in.

Sorry, but these look incredibly messy. There's bubbles everywhere, the gold glitter portions look incredibly bad, and it overall looks really lumpy. You seriously have to work on designing pieces before starting to cast. The color combos and designs look really thrown together as well.

Check on the piece frequently. If you're embedding things in UV resin stick the item down with a blob of resin, and when it's cured pour in the rest of the layer, otherwise it'll move and it cures too quickly to catch in time unless you're obsessively babysitting. If you get a lot of bubbles leave the resin to sit for a couple of minutes and run a lighter over it before you set it. If you're not using a lamp keep checking every couple of minutes to see if some unfortunate insect or bit of dirt got itself embedded in your piece.

That should work- but careful not to overload the stick with resin. It's better to spend 10 minutes dripping resin in than two hours cleaning the resulting mess.

The flowers are dried nail art ones. I also managed to get a bag of dried heather which is used for crafts which provides a little variation. I've dried a few flowers but have yet to try them. When using them take things slow and use in reeeealy thin layers to avoid bubbles if you're using uv resin.

I also feel as though some of the pieces added onto the base key takes away from the whole design? This is particularly with the blue to the left and the pink above it - it's just not in proportion and you don't know where to look. Try to get things that tie in well together.
The clear one with the star is passable, and I like the blue with the wings and bow but I'm not feeling the heart on top because it's simply too big. Maybe try a smaller one?

Sharing my latest work (it's a brooch). Any advice on materials for the base? I made a base out of an ordinary thick cardboard, but I hate it since it's difficult to cut precisely and it tends to split between the layers.
Also, sharing a tip: don't fucking buy Padico's "Decollage Coat"! Such a waste of money, I'm truly disappointed. It's just an ordinary decoupage varnish, and it sucks compared to Mod Podge or Decopatch. I'm really mad with it since it fucked me a piece up when I totally wasn't expecting this.

Anon from here. I tried practicing doing some color resin last night. I don't have resin pigment so I just used the eyeshadow technique. I still got some bits of the shadow that didn't mixed. You can't see them from the front just the back. I tried doing a little bit of a swirled effect. You can see it in the flash pictures, but the non-flash is more true to the general colors. I also overpoured my mold so I transered some into the extra mold and made the panda this morning. I forgot to babysit the resin so some of my glitter went in front of the panda. Also didn't notice a hair got in with the alpaca.
Besides the stuff I pointed out, did I do a good job with the color blending? Also, I noticed on a couple of the clear pieces I have a bunch of micro bubbles(the panda and the bird one, not so noticeable in the unicorn one), should I go ahead and let my resin sit longer before pouring to get rid of them along with using the lighter? Could it be the way I mixed it? Or something else?

If you mix powder+resin and let it sit for a bit the clumps sink.
The colours are fine but you could make the swirls a bit more saturated, it blends in too much and looks too dark as is. Adding in a tiny bit of white would help, or just use more eyeshadow.
Next time leave the resin until it gets tacky before you add in glitter- I've gotten impatient and added it while it was still quite runny and it was a disaster (at least your panda looks cute). Also, if you add the flowers/sequins at different stages, you get a more layered look, so that might be something to experiment with.
You should let the resin sit for a couple of minutes before pouring. I run a lighter over the surface, pour, let it sit, and run a lighter over it again to get rid of as many bubbles as possible. You might be mixing too vigorously, that tends to create microbubbles.
These are cute pieces though.

Really depends on what your molds are made of. If they're silicon, you shouldn't need them. If they're plastic then yeah. You'll need some kind of mold release or you'll have to ruin the mold to get out your pieces.

You only need mold release if your molds aren't silicone, though you can use them on silicone molds to lengthen the mold life.
As for the Lisa Pavelka stuff, I've used it and honestly it's not the best. If anyone's interested in a mini review- I use it and Padico and Padico is by far the better option; it cures fast, hard and seems to last longer.
This stuff takes forever to cure in comparison. Use a nail lamp instead of a torch if you want to get it. It seems to be weirdly sticky when I take it out of the mold too.
It's decent, but maybe that's because I'm comparing a UV glaze to resin made specifically for resin-based crafts. The price is way better than Padico, and it's not bad at all for making charms, but I don't know if I'll be buying it again.

I generally use it for small things and coming. It works fine for that, imo, much easier than trying to manage with epoxy but I definitely wouldn't recommend it for bigger things. Usually cures in 30mins direct sunlight for me.

I don't think ceramic molds would work with resin, as it sticks to clay and glazes. Even if you had mod release you'd have a hard time getting the pieces out of the molds. Use silicone instead, it's 100x easier.

You could make your own mold by casting similar items. The clear one is very remniscent of stuff from cheap chandeliers. I recommend hitting up a thrift store.

I don't know where to buy one but I've literally just finished making one out of silicone putty. It was pretty cheap, since it lasts a while, but if you only want the one mold it's not worth it.
I honestly have no idea why these molds are so expensive, it seems like every other mold is a reasonable price.

Okay anons. I tried a few pours last night for the first time ever.
And let me say, it was a lot harder than I expected. I mean it wasn't difficult really, but it required a lot more finesse than I expected. My pieces didn't come out great, but I stuck a few in my pocket to play with at work because I love how they glitter. Trying again tonight probably.
So I was working with two part epoxy today, and it seems that it didn't mix well so the resin won't harder properly now. Hence I've got an urgent question: how do I clean all this liquid mess right now? And all the measuring cups (separate for the resin and hardener)? I have no idea since the package says it's forbidden to wash the resin into sewers.

I use acetone and paper towels to wipe it out of my cups when I'm done. Then I wash it as normal. Not sure how well it would work on a large amount, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Yeah, you need to add more glitter. It looks like it's all evenly covered until you take it out of the mold, so you really need to make sure to add more to the edges in case it doesn't spread evenly.
Other than that, it's really good for a first try. I can't see any bubbles and the piece looks smooth and hard, so it's already better than my first resin pieces, which were sticky disasters.
For some reason my pieces aren't drying out completely outside. They are still sticky after weeks, how can I fix this?
I'm afraid of adding too much catalyst and making the resin yellow, but I'm suing a scale to measure the appropriate amount.

What kind of resin are you using though? Some are measured by equal weight and some by equal volume. For example, EasyCast/Amazing you make sure you have the same volume when you put the cups side by side, but with others you'd need the same ounces (so when put side to side there is not necessarily the same volume) if that makes sense.
Also if you have a lot of humidity, that can prolong curing as well.

I tried my hand at doming a couple of the pieces I pulled, but quickly realized my table was uneven so most of them turned out pretty sloppy. I also tried adding some chunky glitter and different colors. I'm still stuck on how to add depth? I tried adding them at different times/stickiness but they all kind of just sunk to the same level... Anyone have any tips?

Adding dempth is as simple as working with layers of resin. Pour your first layer, add the thing you want in the foreground most (depending on where wait until it's almost firm or add it a bit earlier so it can still sink slightly), wait until tacky, pour second layer, add thing 2, etc. It's a bit more work since you basically have to wait a lot (unless you're working with UV resin) but you'll be sure your things will be on different levels.

If you're not patient enough to wait 12 hours to pour another layer, add in things you want to sink to the bottom (for example, the sequins in the bottom left piece) first and when it's really viscous and sticky add glitter/whatever you want on top. It'll sink, but not much, and you'll get a more 3D effect.

So I've been using castin craft resin in the tin. Tried doming some pieces. Noticed I was getting bubbles. Tried on another piece. Lit it on fucking fire (thankfully I was able to blow it out and it doesn't look damaged). But now they have big holes and I just tried to smooth more resin over them. jfc. It should be ok but before you buy it make sure you know what type of resin it is (epoxy, polyurethane, etc) and if it yellows. Depending on what type of resin it is, you'll need a respirator and a well-ventilated workspace. Also, some resin catches fire when you run a lighter over it to remove bubbles, so check to make sure you won't set yourself on fire before you buy it.
Also, do you guys not have any way to buy resin online?
Did a couple more tests. Still not good at deciding how much resin I actually need to mix, so I have a shit ton of solid black and blue pieces that I'll just practice doming on.
I really like mixing the clear and solid colored resins but I'm having a tough time doing it in an appealing way. The clear/black one is my favorite one but I scratched the mold when I did it. I also tried the depth tips you guys gave me, and they worked out. Sadly I managed to make the piece too thin so it's not as drastic as I would do in a real piece hopefully.
Going to buy some more glitter, and some stuff to try coloring today or tomorrow.
I really want to try cellophane chunks in the resin. This is so exciting. :D

I said this earlier in the thread, but use tape. Packing tape, washi tape -- tape that doesn't have a texture. Sticky side toward the resin (obviously) and peel off once you're done.
Just make sure you wrap it up like crazy if you aren't using UV resin, because you're going to have trouble with the cure time.

Honestly, looking through the old threads is the best way to see which brands work best. There are several comparisons online, too, generally speaking jewellery/craft resin is better than industrial resin, and UV resin seems to be less likely to yellow.
Um, seems I've got some uncommon problem as Google didn't give me anything. I usually get my pieces out of molds after 24h (their curing time is 36), and let them sit in the open air to harden properly. Ran into a problem using stickers. I'm taking larger stickers and turning them into pins by putting them onto thick poster board and using resin to coat them. After 2 coats though the stickers started separating from the cardboard and were no longer flat but instead slightly curved.
I've heard people mention Modpodge to protect paper/images from getting ruined, but can I also use it to seal the edges so the sticker doesn't come off the poster board?

I want to order charms, chains, bezels, etc.. for my resin jewelry and keychains.
I'm not sure which metal types I should order, and which ones to avoid. Like I see some charms for sell that the metal is listed as zinc alloy.
I don't want to get anything gold/silver plated, since it tends to look like shit after extended wear. But I'm more concerned about allergy and potential toxin issues like lead. Any charms I'd have inside resin should be okay, but I'd be concerned about anything touching skin.

You could always coat metals with acrylic sealant or something along those lines if they're going to be touching skin. A lot of people also use nailpolish topcoats on the insides of rings to prevent discolouration/allergy issues.
