If people don't know the names fairy kei freaks them out more unless it's very casual. I've had numerous older relatives make comments along the lines of "Wow, they look like they're dressing like toddlers" if they see fairy kei or decora on my screen, whereas ones that don't know what lolita is think it's weird as heck but don't think it looks like literal children's clothing. Some of my friends that are ambivalent towards lolita are also really freaked out by fairy kei and make similar comments.

Lolita just gets labeled as that because people make a big deal of it in the community. Stop talking about it, and the label will go away. It's just that some people can't get over the idea of it, keep bringing it up, and then people just joining the fashion meet these people and think it's a giant deal.
Lolita fashion just has more drama.
Can I vent for a moment about how hard it is to find cute non basic/single color fairy kei bottoms/tights? It feels like everything cute from brand is either hard to find or stupidly expensive for what it is, and everything designed in the west tends to be the same clusterfuck of whatever is currently trending on a skater skirt/pair of tights. It wouldn't be that hard to make cute patterend skirts using a basic polka dot/cutesy pattern, why do people constantly feel the need to make designs as absurdly OTT as possible? I honestly think HTT and KG designs are atrocious and don't really work even if OTT fairy-kei outfits.
I feel like I'm maybe being too picky but I can't help it? There are few Western crafters I love and most if not all don't even produce clothes.

As for the absurdly OTT thing, that's what's more popular in the west. They don't want something to feel good about everyday, they want something that people will stop and stare and compliment on the street, and that's what OTT can get.

I've been really into fairy kei for years, but I was stuck in a rut of only owning black/grey/white clothes other than my lolita ones.
Recently I bought a bunch of cheap pastel coloured stuff (tank tops, tshirts, hair barettes) in charity shops and I want to order from Maniaq but I'm nervous about the fact that everything is 1 size.
